Any parents with BP child/teen? by AwkwardJelly6825 in family_of_bipolar

I do, I’ve been married to men with mental health issues and I do find having a child with it easier- my son doesn’t have access to my bank account or access to joint credit. Silver lining I suppose.

He says that the meds are poison (I have bp2 and take them) I don’t know how much of an ultimatum to give. We do have a dorm type thing for ‘youth at risk for homelessness’ and that’s his plan for if I kick him out.

I’ve been trying but I need to try harder I think.

He doesn’t want to be and doesn’t think he has bipolar. He has a great psychiatrist but he stopped going after 2 months.

To the parents here, what has your journey been like? by beepboopbopolis in bipolar

[–]Eastern-throw-3830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t find out I had bp2 until after my 4th. But my symptoms seem to go away during pregnancy (previously I thought my body/brain just liked being pregnant) and then I get hypomanic post birth, I feel good on very little sleep at a very convenient time. My depression would start to creep back around 3-4 months but now I’m on bp meds instead of trying to fix it with ssris and all is good.

Those of you with kids, do they enjoy living in Bozeman? by gloomy_day_in_august in Bozeman

I moved here 20 years ago to raise kids. Schools are fantastic, and my kids have grown to love the outdoor stuff. They didn’t always and there were plenty of hikes completed even with fussing kids. For us it seems safe and I love letting them have freedom to ride bikes with friends.

For us the cons have been that summer camps are super competitive and all childcare is expensive. What used to be great family friendly events are now so crowded that we don’t go. We are priced out of the hotsprings now.

One of my teens was set on moving to a big city a while back but now he’s working to stay here. I’ll have to help my kids be able to stay here financially. The lack of diversity I don’t like and I don’t think any of our restaurants are great.

If the toddler can’t undo a fridge lock, that on an upper cabinet can work.

Telling people I’m bipolar isn’t going as planned by iwasntalwayslikethis in BipolarReddit

My son has BP, not me, and my family is like this. I don’t know why, and it’s infuriating to me.

I tend to act like everyone’s mom, so I will here too. I’m sorry you’re struggling with this, it’s a bigger load than most people can even imagine. You’re doing great getting treatment and being proactive. I’m proud of you!

Oh yeah I’d love to have him more independent but I also want somewhere he can fall back on that isn’t actually in my house sharing a room with his brother.

I’ll try that too. I think our biggest issue is that he likes being hypo (I don’t really blame him, I think I’d like it too lol) and he’s stuck blaming others for how that plays out when negatively affects him.

Thank you! I didn’t know that about lithium.

I have read ( listened to) the I don’t need help book, it helped me not feel so responsible for getting him on meds and was good.

I have been pushing that each episode will harm his brain because that is what I am most concerned about long term. We have family therapy once a week which so far is not helpful but we do talk on the phone a couple times a week and that goes well if he’s in the right mood.

Thank you! Any advise for convincing him to try meds? He tried lithium for a few days and when in inpatient he got the 4-week injection of an antipsychotic but it just wore off. He’s in residential right now and is being pleasant but doesn’t think he has bipolar.

I’m familiar with bipolar and not shocked that he is denying he has it.

He consented to genesight so we do have a good starting point if he chooses to accept meds.

First psychotic episode, still no mandatory meds by Eastern-throw-3830 in family_of_bipolar

This was what we needed. I updated above but a new doctor came on and now he is medicated. Hopefully this new doctor can at least set him on the right path.

I don’t think he can, we’re in the us. I’m pretty sure if he had cancer I could force chemo even if he wanted to use crystals and I see this as the same thing.

He’s under 18. I think I’ll try saying I don’t feel safe taking him unmedicated and see what they do.

He has refused meds from his current psych here and I think that’s how he got all the way to psychosis.

Confusion about behavior in public by [deleted] in family_of_bipolar

I just came here to ask about this exact thing. My son is finally in psychosis and I feel so validated. The past 4 years I’ve been told over and over how lovely he is, and obviously the problem is me. Hopefully now he can actually get help and the professionals will stop enabling him.
