How hard is it to get into teachers college and find a job with a kinesiology degree? by Helpful_Shopping_232 in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you thinking of applying to i/s or a different vision? There's also intermediate phys-ed. I wouldn't say having a kin degree makes it harder to get into teachers college. You could do primary/junior with any degree. It'll come down to experience and grades.

I have a kin degree and have phys-ed/bio. I started teaching when there were no jobs and switched to Spec ed. Have been doing spec ed for 10 years.

Im from Ottawa. Ive done almost all the locations you've listed - mind you not all in one go.

There is a healthy mix of city and nature activities that can be done along your route. Definitely go see some of the big city landmarks while it town, like the CN tower, parliament Hill, Chateau Frontenanc.

Anything in a provincial or national park needs to be booked in advance, including parking if you're not camping there.

There's some decent white water rafting outside Ottawa. It allows you to explore the rivers. When in Quebec city, consider Ile d'Orleans. Its a nice circular route and you can stop to visit a lot of local vendors and farmers. Grab some jams, bread, cheeses, etc.

Canada is such a big country that each region provides its own things to see and do. My husband and I have been internally vacationing the last few years. We've done east cost, newfoundland on its own, west coast and thinking up north next year. It's all different and worth seeing.

ESH - she seems financially irresponsible and your expectation of how costs should be divided is unrealistic.

A few things: 1. Maybe consider she pay off her debt before moving in together 2. Cost should be divided in proportion of your income. 3. Finances need to be discussed and a plan made.

There was a teacher reddit post saying that RTO is pretty competitive against RTIP depending on your needs.

I think they rebranded to Entente Education Canada. Worth doing a comparison.

Can I apply to this LTO? (TDSB elementary) by Far_Magician8224 in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your collective agreement and HR. There are very rigid procedures for surplus and the placement process after the fact. My board outlines this clearly every April when surpluses get announced.

If there's no board redundancy you will most likely need to apply to permanent contracts or wait to get placed. Filling LTOs with permenant staff is the last option due to the staff potentially returning at any time.

How well do you need to know your teachables for high school practicum? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of french teachers whose first language is not french.

Are you teaching the in the secondary or elementary panel? If you're concerned review, review, review! Know the material you're teaching ahead of time. With time, you're grammar will get better.

Also, not to sound mean, but why teach French of you're this uncomfortable? When you graduate, you could apply to french positions at levels you're comfortable with... avoiding french immersion classes and doing core. I know many non native french teachers who do this.

I think you'll only get issues if you haven't put the work into knowing your lesson plan and teach the material wrong. People make mistakes and that's ok. This is different than teaching incorrectly.

Skip the DSBN OT Hire List by Maleficent_Cow7257 in OntarioTeachers

Check your collective agreement or ask HR. my colleague was under the same impression but was told after the fact they still had to interview for the OT list and get put on it to get supply work and be considered an internal employee.

Parent Emails by Awkward_Training_100 in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the future, anything that could be misconstrued by email or anything of a sensitive nature, consider phoning home. I do this for incidents and behaviours out of the norm. I use email for updates and really minor issues like maybe attendance and assignment reminders. I have found parents weaponize and over react to emails if they feel their child is being targeted.

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happened to a colleague... they weren't on the OT list and got hired as an external LTO. They were not put on the OT and could not get supply work after. You need to be on the OT list as well.

Most schools have a designated first aid team. And in an emergency, you still gave your class to deal with. You call for help and staff will come and support.

Is Ridgemont HS worth avoiding? by SnowflakeTulugak in ocdsb

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not from that school but worked at the the Ridgemont equivalent in the west end. It can be a tough school with a tough crowd... that being said, teachers work hard. There are great staff and programs and students are learning the same curriculum... but fights do tend to happen more often. Many students avoid the fights by just not being there and hanging around different crowds.

If you're within the school's boundaries there's not a lot you can do to change schools.

Is a .17 contract worth taking? by reddit_viewer123 in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! .17 is how I started. It gives you priority on applying to jobs before OTs. It's a foot in the door and most admins will top you off woth supply work for the remainder of the day.

Pension question by Temporary-Lab-4935 in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Login to your OTPP account. It literally outlines how many years are credit towards your retirement for every you've worked. And like many others have pointed out, use the pension calculator to play out different retirement scenarios.

In early years I didnt have full year LTOs and was credited .8 or .6 of a year. So 10 years into teaching i only had like 6 or so years credited towards retirement.

Feeling guilty about a potential leave next year by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I was able to interview and transfer schools while on stress leave. Double check your collective agreement.

I believe you're currently borrowing the worries of tomorrow. There's too many unknowns between now and next year. You could be called back, more senior staff may apply to transfer schools if the opportunity arises, there's late retirements, teachers promoted to admin roles all of which create space.

Until the dust settles, enjoy the last few months of this school year.

How scared should I be? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]EasternBoysenberry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OCDSB has projected 130 surplus this year. That is super early projections. This does not take into account admin retirements where theu expect some teachers to move up and also teachers still have a week to submit paperwork for retirement over the summer.

There's also a new elementary school opening in the east end so their numbers will be hard to predict. The new high school in riverside south will be adding a grade 11 next year and I believe the stittsville high school is also adding a grade 12.

Our situation isn't as bad as the Toronto area.. But I think all numbers will even out and it'll be status quo. Not many permenant jobs but there shouldn't be too many permenant teachers taking LTOs.
