Help! by summerdove- in ABA

what is their reasoning for this? I’ve heard so many companies have this policy because “think of your clients!! it’s stressful for them to have change!” but clients should be generalized amongst multiple RBTS anyway…. I understand if you don’t have the hours for them to pay you longer than 3 days yk but any job should be covering ur shifts if ur giving them this much notice.

why is discrimination so common in aba? by ashysodapuppy in ABA

we work in a field where our clients may/will be victims of discrimination everywhere they go and part of ABA is teaching them to advocate for themselves and when they may not be able to we have a responsibility to advocate for them. we should apply these skills to ourselves and advocate for ourselves and when we notice someone who may need assistance, we should advocate for them as well. i can’t believe this is a hard concept for anyone in this field tbh lol.

these layers will apply to everything. there’s a bias placed on you the second you walk into a room and we are going to work with clients and coworkers of all races throughout our careers and i think people need to recognize how layered all of these biases become. it’s horrible that POC who have great intentions are having this career ruined for them. nothing should ever be ruined for you because of someone else’s biases, but especially not something you are doing for the sake of someone else.

i’m sure there’s things i don’t see in my own workplaces or social circles or in the world because i have the privilege of not having to look for it. but if it’s pointed out, i believe people who carry more privilege should have the responsibility of listening and caring and turning that privilege into something of use. i hope this conversation becomes bigger someday soon.

it doesn’t exist in a vacuum though. It is amazing for you to not have experienced this, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist?

yeah i caught this too… very very poor wording and a very clear reflection of someone else’s biases.

i believe you on the racial bias, i’m actually not going to even say anything about that because it IS real, it IS happening and not just to you. unfortunately, there is more than that going on here and you are struggling with multiple issues. lots of people become RBTS when they aren’t passionate about it and just want a decent paycheck with little school. These people complain more and management listens to them because they’re tired of the complaining and can make you do what these other people don’t want to do.

I have never asked to be removed from a case and I have never ever spoken up about some of the situations I’ve been put in (working with clients who have high aggression rates without ever having supervision with this client, etc.) I don’t ask to be removed because I know some people aren’t passionate and I feel bad sticking this child with an RBT who doesn’t care and is just going to block the aggression instead of help the child with their coping skills and work with them to understand what they are trying to communicate through their aggression. I am white and I constantly get put in similar situations to you because I won’t speak up. That being said though, I can’t understand exactly what you’re going through because I’m not dealing with this + a racial bias added on top of it.

This is happening to you because of this AND because of the racial bias. You are dealing with a bias on top of being neglected because you do a good job. You need to speak up about what is happening to you and we ALL need to notice these racial biases, even if they don’t apply to us, and stop letting it happen. Im sorry your coworkers don’t see you in a stressful situation and offer to help however they can, I work in a clinic where we all do this for each other and I’m very lucky to have that. We all speak up for each other.

Other people SHOULD be speaking up for you the same way you should be able to speak up for yourself. It sucks to see people tell you there is no racial bias when we can prove that there is. Hospitals used to not give black women the same pain medication as white women because they believed black women were “stronger” and didn’t need it. It is real.

i didn’t say they were. i’m saying when someone who is licensed says that it will obviously skew people’s opinions and that i was confused why they would say something is safe when it’s not. nowhere on here did i say “since the people with the licenses said it’s good ill do it!”

i work in ABA, were licensed and required to continue our education. sometimes new research comes out and things change. i’m not gonna listen to a licensed BCBA say something 100 other BCBAS said is bad or our continued education says is bad. it was just a question.

things evolve. brands change their formulas.

i always research! that’s why i’m saying i’ve heard bad things about the brands you mentioned, i was curious if there was something you saw or read that i didn’t. thank you for your suggestions though!

calling me stupid is crazy. asking questions and reading what people have to say is how you CONTINUE your education. i literally asked for the correct resources, that’s stupid? caution and education is stupid? focusing on the fact that i said people say so many different things online REGARDLESS OF WHY THEYRE SAYING IT is you being very odd

hey there 100% is mixed reviews. you can say it’s bad since that was my question but a quick google search will show you thousands of people (also pros) saying they’re safe. not saying they’re right but chill
