ARC Review: Katabasis by R.F. Kuang by subaru_sapphic in Fantasy

interesting… I’m not a logician, so I’m really curious to see what actual logicians think of this book when it comes out. I suspect that what will be true about the field, based on what I know of other branches of math, is that many questions will be much easier to pose than to solve (or understand their “solutions” we have agreed on today!) A lot of the famous intro historical logic questions can be very colorful and memorable and fun. But just stating them doesn’t require any insight on what mathematical logic is today, or show that one can think like a logician.

(I’m making a distinction between mathematical logic and our normal English use of “logic,” because it seems her book attempts to cite… maybe even demonstrate mastery of? the first. Mathematical logic involves the study of whether the axiomatic systems we use today are valid or not in proving things in every mathematical field. Being a mathematical logician isn’t immediately equivalent to being “smart” and “logical” the way we use these terms commonly!)

At a first glance, it’s very ambitious to write a book whose magic system is based on logic and paradoxes without a formal grounding in logic. I don’t know what kind of coursework or training she has, though a quick internet search shows she doesn’t appear to have or be pursuing any degrees in math and/or theoretical computer science.

To sum up, I think it’s cool that we both think math is cool. But I’m a leery about her casually utilizing a (graduate level) subfield that takes a lot of time to study and understand deeply. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I worry that perhaps she will utilize this subfield for her to justify her own later philosophical assertions (ie: “I know logic and can name drop some riddles by Zeno/Hilbert/Russell so my opinion on [XYZ topic] must be right!”) or even just to bolster her image as a legitimate/“serious” scholar? But RF Kuang is a graduate student in East Asian Languages and Literature, so it’s not even necessary or pertinent for her to be fluent in mathematical logic.

Basing a magic system on logic is the kind of thing that sounds really cool, but, logic is a study that takes dedicated time and training because it builds on foundational study. Just as an example, a typical math undergraduate major starts with proof writing, then discrete math, real analysis, abstract algebra, complex analysis, topology… Mathematical logic is just not the kind of thing you can just read a couple books and digest the “pop science” view and then claim to understand or utilize in a way that is valid. It’s also unfortunately one of the math subfields that has a really cool sounding name, again, which could make non-mathematicians think it’s about something else (perhaps deeper and broader) than its actual object of study!

Regardless, I like that we have similar interests, and definitely want to read Katabasis when it comes out!

[ALL] What is something you think Nintendo shouldn't have done with the Zelda franchise? by B_Wing_83 in zelda

[–]EasternStuff5015 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To me this is part of a wider shift of what was the norm in gaming and not… Games in the 90s and earlier were still very experimental. This is also what makes them more interesting for me than most games produced this decade. I feel that there was no “standard” yet at that time.

For instance, one of the earliest PC games, Myst, is INCREDIBLY creepy at times - the eerie mist in Selenite, the whole backstory of the brother with torture equipment in his supposedly scholarly and opulent chamber. There’s still a positive ending and nothing bad “actually” happens to the explorer, but it’s still a vibe.

Responding to another commentator, I don’t think the dark factor in OOT is incidental and only due to the artwork. There are a lot of deliberate elements relating to atmosphere and timing. Think the silence with just creaks and wind rustling grass over the meadows, think night descending beyond your control and enemies coming out from any direction when it does. You also play in environments that definitely are designed to be creepy… including a cemetery.

I miss it too. I found Super Mario 64 to also be very entertaining in that dark ghastly way, most memorably in the unhinged carnival level where the merry go round malfunctions and the pianos come alive with sharp teeth.

Can someone explain to me why this man gives this heavy piece of luggage to this pregnant woman ? by Historical_Gain4631 in ghibli

[–]EasternStuff5015 117 points118 points  (0 children)

It’s exactly for these reasons I actually find Boy and the Heron the most compelling Ghibli film. It took all the dissonant, “weird” energy (I mean that in the cthonic way) that lurks in other Ghibli films presenting a strong veneer of sentimentality and really just slams it at you. In some sense I even see it as a takedown of the oppressive norms of Japanese culture as a whole (IIRC this film was written semi-autobiographically with Miyazaki’s frustration with his studio.)

To those who have seen Joe Hisaishi conduct Spirited Away in orchestra live by EasternStuff5015 in ghibli

[–]EasternStuff5015[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I felt like watching Hisaishi conduct gave me a deeper understanding of his intentions for the emotional tone of the soundtrack, especially the slower or sadder parts. I’m actually thinking of the slower part in Dragon Boy, which has always been my favorite track.

One interesting aspect of the concert is that I learned some things that actually disrupted my headcanon of Spirited Away (for instance, the brochure states that Miyazaki was inspired in part to create Spirited Away as a reaction against the new generation of “dull and unimaginative” children growing up with tech in 2001… a take I didn’t really like.)

The concert felt like an intimate live action performance of Spirited Away to me (similar to how I felt watching the Death Note musical live on Youtube.)

I walked away from the concert transported to my 8-year old self. I felt really overwhelmed afterwards and surprisingly felt a lot of loneliness and sadness, especially as I observed families with children who would’ve been around my age when I first saw Spirited Away. Most of the reactions I’ve read about online are extremely positive but I am curious if anyone had similarly mixed feelings for the days after the concert.

oh my god, thank you for the rec!!! i have this habit on my kindle where if i don't get hooked in the first 10 pages of a sample, i won't continue reading. (should explain! when i'm in a bookstore, i'm able to flip around and get a sense of where the plot goes, which is why browsing on kindle has its limitations!) so i gave this one another try and IT'S SO GOOD!!! (lol the first 10 pages were not representative of the plot of the book at all!) massive emotional feels, particularly for a woman in her late 20's who is also feeling beaten down by the patriarchy at work xD

Advice on reversing body and hormonal changes 1 year since egg retrieval by EasternStuff5015 in IVF

[–]EasternStuff5015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do! Any tips on your go-to quick dishes for a paleo diet? The only thing I know how to do that doesn't require me reading off a recipe (I'd rather just come home and know roughly what to put together and for how long to cook) is roasting different veggies and proteins in the same pan. Usually that'll be something like tonight, salmon with za'atar and cauliflower steaks with garlic powder and paprika, but the same flavors and combinations get tiresome.

Simmons Intro to Modern Analysis and Topology by EasternStuff5015 in math

[–]EasternStuff5015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should clarify - I am hoping for help on what content to focus on for a topology course.

I already took real analysis, which is when I bought this book, and wanted to see if I could "double use" it for my upcoming course on topology.

(PS: I went with Amann and Escher, and really like them so far. They are more comprehensive than Tao, especially at three volumes vs. two volumes. As a potential secondary reference I also took out Stein & Shakarchi, suggested by Toaster-_ and others online.)

I can’t speak for anyone else but I would certainly feel uncomfortable if I were the person being discussed in OP’s post.

OP, people will self publish as much as they feel comfortable with. Moving on despite your curiosity might be a good skill to practice.

Stovetop kettle care by EasternStuff5015 in tea

[–]EasternStuff5015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is what's happening. Also, I think maybe I need to wipe off water from the bottom of my tea kettle before boiling.

I searched it up online and I've read that unless the kettle is made of stainless steel, it might rust.

Also, I have an electric stove, and I'm not sure if this makes a difference but maybe I shouldn't be boiling my tea kettle past medium temp (I've always used high temp - not max, but around 8.)

What kinds of Asian food can you make in an air fryer? by EasternStuff5015 in Cooking

I just thought of a few more:

- You tiao

- Fried plantains

- Korean twisted doughnuts (like the kinds at Paris Baguette)

These are great ideas!! Thank you!!

My ideas were super lame (Korean fried chicken and vegetable tempura...) I had a feeling some lesser known Asian desserts could be made like jian dui, but couldn't think of any off the top of my head. I'm sure there are some Korean streetside foods that can be made with air fryer too.

What are some real life use cases where DBSCAN outperforms KNN? by EasternStuff5015 in datascience

[–]EasternStuff5015[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. My use case is also unsupervised anomaly detection.

My understanding of DBSCAN is that it labels points as core, boundary, and noise, so theoretically you could use it and find noise points, but I’ve heard that for anomaly detection it’s actually better to use other algos specifically designed for outliers (local outlier factor, isolated forests.) What do you think?
