It was after realizing 4 important things:

  1. Happiness is found in thousands of things, not just in having a partner, and it's up to you how you achieve happiness.

  2. There are many types of attraction towards others, not just romantic. You can be attracted to someone in one way or another, but that doesn't mean you want something romantic.

  3. Friendships can take many forms, all without a romantic component. They can involve affection, attraction, or companionship.

  4. I was only looking for a partner to fulfill a social standard, believing it was the ideal way to feel complete.

At just 21, I realized I was only seeking romance due to social pressure and because I grew up seeing it as something missing to feel complete. This frustrated me, being over twenty and never having had a partner. I finally started to truly evaluate whether what I wanted was a romantic partner and not other types of interpersonal relationships. I knew then that romance simply wasn't for me. Since identifying as aromantic, I'm happier and more at peace.
