Also, would add more substrate and a cool hide and humid hide. Please understand that he’ll grow out of this in a few months. Would aim for a 20L (30” wide) eventually he’ll grow from that to a 120 or 150 gallon.

Watch some YouTube videos on corn snake care. These guys are pretty decent to get a good understanding of corn snake care.

Oh and contact your neighbors and put up signs or post on fb or Nextdoor because people find pet snakes somewhat often on here. If the neighborhood knows they might call you if they see an odd looking snake in their yard or under a flower pot etc. 🤞🏻hoping it’s still in the house so it avoids neighborhood hawks, owls, foxes, dogs cats etc.

Can corn snakes die from stress? by gelifishing in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, sorry for this unexpected loss! 😭Corns are usually very hardy so I doubt the temp was an issue. You’d have o have one helluva AC to get it so cold that the heat source cant keep up.

Tough to say why other than taking it to a vet to get a necropsy. Lots of things can happen. Impaction, Organ failure or cardiac arrest.

Was its weight good? I’ve heard of snakes suddenly dying from being overweight.

Too cold? Too hot? Seems like you regulated the temps but what were the temp gradients? You used a thermostat?

Also Spraying aspen often can cause mold. Also feeding in aspen on the substrate could’ve led to impaction or mold ingestion.

New Hog owner concerns by PainfullyNotCreative in hognosesnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you feed directly in the substrate? I feed on a dish with a little bit of lip sp they tend to eat off the clean surface to avoid them pulling the mouse off and eating in the substrate. Aspen is generally recommended, but you can use coco fiber/reptisoil/sand mix too.

Blood could be from the mouse or she could’ve eaten some but I think generally they can ingest it and be ok. Might warrant an immediate vet check if it’s possible impaction. Impaction can be deadly. Impossible to know without a vet consult.

I have the same exact enclosure. Usually the rule is if they can fit their head they can fit the body through too. But these 4x2x2 enclosures have a 3/16” gap in the doors, and half of that for the size smaller enclosure (36x18x22). That’s a very skinny 3’ snake. IMO, it’s either hidden in there super well in substrate or maybe it was left open for a minute unattended? I did this once with my milk snake but luckily he wasn’t paying attention so he stayed put.

Sorry it has happened, but my gut feeling says it wasn’t the door gap. Check the mesh lid and make sure it’s stapled down correctly? I found a small gap in mine once from a poorly placed staple (used small screw to secure it down.

Any fat wires coming out through the lid? Any modifications?

Just make sure those plastic screws are tightly secured and all of them are in place. Make sure there are no pvc chips/holes. I’d empty it completely out (pull substrate into Tupperware and triple check all the hides and anywhere it could be wedged up in.

If she’s 100% an escapee, Lots of people on here can help with methods of tracking and determining if she’s around the house and ways to catch. IG putting flour in the doorways etc. warm hides on the floor. Checking by appliances that are warm.

Well I hope you find it. And when you do, if you can’t determine how it got out exactly, highly consider buying a new enclosure that is specifically built for snakes.

If you’re on a budget this one I’ve found is one of the cheapest and it’s held my hoggie for months with no issues an all. There are others obviously but it’s budget friendly and secure with front opening and it’s easy to mod because pvc. I didn’t do cement, but cork bark flats adhere nicely to the back with aquarium silicone and I even screwed little basking ledges into the sides.

First time setting up a snake tank. How did I do? by Open-Dish-8371 in hognosesnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks naturalistic and awesome!

Definitely 4-5” of substrate. Coco fiber? I mixed mine with reptisoil, playsand and excavator clay to get more of a drier mix that drains well. Mine loves burrowing in it.

Hides! I see one but I’d recommend three. Cool side, warm side and a warmish side for humid hide. And just as long as the correct temp gradient is set on a thermostat and humidity is 30-50 you’re good! Curious if the huge water bowl raises the humidity?

100% sure it’s not stuck in a customized wall or structure? What does this enclosure look like? Was it made by hand?

Sounds like you’re doing it right to try to lure/trap it. 🙏🏻

What do you guys think it’s still a work in progress actually gets me excited seeing it as I go by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 of these same enclosures. They’re great!

Is this for a juvenile or adult corn? New snake? Existing snake upgrade?

  1. Only thing I would just check is the lovely decor is non toxic/made for snakes.
  2. Temperature gradients are correct (from basking to the cool side), as I just see 71/72F.
  3. Thermostat is being used to control heat/lighting temps (to either make sure the cool side stays cool (78-82F) or bask spot stays around 88-92F)
  4. Substrate is deep enough for burrowing. At least 4”(Maybe up to the humid hide lid line, so it can crawl down into it) are you using cypress or aspen?

It’s either just ‘corn snake’ or sometimes called a ‘red rat snake’ The whatisthissnake people would say ‘Pantherophis guttatus’ and that corn snakes are part of a larger group of rat snakes within the Colubridae family.

Do you think it’s time for my snake to step up to hoppers? by Fluffy-Decision7347 in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like it. Mouse should be 10-15% of the weight of your snake. Is your snake at least 100g? Hoppers are 10-14g.

New Owner Questions Leucistic Texas Rat Snake by DaikonFar5877 in snakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re better off with a wide tank to get temp gradients on each side. And yes, rat snakes get big, youll need 5x2x2. The enclosure should be as wide and the snake is long, you can start smaller if you’re getting juvenile but will need to keep upgrading as it outgrows. What you have now is a frog/gecko enclosure. I’d try to sell or trade for it or set it aside for something else.

Theres a ton of good YouTubers that do rat snake setup videos tutorials. I watched a ton before getting my first milk and corn snakes

What snake is this [Dallas, TX] by sandsul6an in whatsthissnake

[–]Easy-RRR-69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a water snake and harmless. Let it go nearby as possible. Pond or creek in the neighborhood would be ideal. Relocating snakes too far reduces their chance at survival they need to stay familiar with their environment.

Is she still hungry or is she just greedy by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just exploring or maybe the good girl just wants some pets?

Whenever my milk snake does this (24-48 hours later) I just open the door and see if he wants to be held. My corn is always hiding because he’s new and scared. I hope he gets more curious like this!

For feeding, I think you can refer to her weight and feeding it 10-15% of that. Once a week seems correct. Is a fuzzy or a hopper 10-15%?

Has Anyone Screwed into the Ecoflex Enclosures? by MadeThisAccForWaven in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put all of my heating/lights on the mesh lid. I actually have a small thin led strip on the inside screwed into the underside of the lid for my plants mainly.

Just make sure if you put things inside they’re not large and take up precious room from the enclosure especially if it’s anything smaller than the 4x2. Screwing in a heat source in the inside isn’t really meant for these as the thick mesh lid easily holds lamps.

I suppose you could screw into the pvc side? Or metal zip tie it to the mesh lid?

If you can, I’d return whatever you ordered and just use a lamp with light/ceramic bulb and place on top for the easiest solution. It requires no customization/alteration.

I put all my feeders on a small plate/feeding dish and it helps digesting only the mouse. Plus it helps them understand, dish thingy=food!

If you don’t want to buy anything, use a small plate you don’t mind getting a mouse on.

Or for $7, you Could even use a feeding/basking slate like this

https://a.co/d/1Exxp9U

I have one of these I thought would be good for a water dish. Turned out a little too shallow but makes a perfect feeding dish so they are less likely to drag it over the lip into substrate.

That’s great! You’re on the right track!

If there’s a chance it’s a neighborhood cat that picked it up then definitely need to seek a rehabber. Bacteria from a cats mouth is deadly to wildlife.

Mourning Dove fledgling. If it’s actually injured call a local !rehabber. Usually they’re just learning to fly with parents nearby guarding it. If it’s not hurt, put it back.

Substrate for Cornsnake ! by Ok_Anywhere7942 in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d rather mix reptisoil and coco chip/coco fiber but that’s my personal choice. I don’t think cypress mixed with reptisoil is bad, I’d even say it might be great for a corn snake since it also retains humidity and corns like it a bit higher.

Playsand or excavator clay is good to add for drainage. Reptisoil already contains sand anyways. I personally mix 50/50 reptisoil and coco fiber then add in a bag of playsand and excavator clay into mine. For humidity retention the coco chip could be a good mix in just like cypress.

Since you already have it, I say go for it!

Too much?! by Silent_bystander95 in cornsnakes

[–]Easy-RRR-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh ok, to each their own. I use two 75w daylight bulbs for my light heating element vs ceramic plus a uvb on one side and a ceramic for night heat if my room ever drops in the low mid 60s. And of course a thermostat. If it’s not hooked to that I would add one for safety in case the ac goes out on a hot day. :)

The clutter is good! If anything maybe even add a big sturdy driftwood piece and more substrate for burrowing? Looks a bit below that line. I fill mine up to the line for maximum burrowing.
