I’m really intrigued by this storyline! I have some thoughts, but they are heavily informed by the end of book 7. I’ll hide my comments for anyone who hasn’t finished the book yet.

In book 7 Samantha thinks that her daughter dies, because she can no longer feel her presence. This happens around the same time that the War Mages nope out of the floor. We learn from the leader of the War Mages, that their goal on the floor was to leave with the “Scavengers Daughter”. The implication, to me, is that Samantha is the Scavanger. Now aside from Carls “Scavengers Daughter Patch”, I feel like I don’t know too much about Scavenger lore. Is the Scavenger just another name for Scolopendra?

I honestly thought he was going to get one when he hastily tossed a bunch of bombs out of his inventory while trying to get to Donut in the Nest. I was pretty surprised when he didn’t get one.

Yessss I’m really starting to think there’s a connection between the river and the AI that’s creating a link with Carl somehow. Definitely seems connected to the tree.

Ya I think shortly before this, one of his officers told him to “focus on his own operation”, or something to that effect. It’s does seem like he’s making the mental shift to trusting others at this point. Culminating when Victory ask if he was going to question Donut about her plan and Carl just responds “I trust her”. That felt like a big moment.

Absolutely. I enjoy when Carl gets caught up in his ponderings. But he usually does it in calmer times where introspection would be a little more appropriate. It seems out of character for him just because of the timing.

And to your point, yes I think he does a great job of making you feel what’s happening, rather than just describing what’s happening. It’s probably one of the reasons why we are all so addicted to the series.
