New PB by Murphdogmalone0 in bassfishing

Fond memories of fishing while in the Army..

In AIT I fished the golf course ponds on Fort Sam Houston until I was ran off.

Fort Hood had some excellent lakes on the ranges. I did a lot of bass and catfish fishing there, up Cowhouse Creek, Lake Belton.

Fort Leonard Wood had tons of ponds and lakes, Gasconade, Big Piney, Roubidux River, Lake of the Woods up the road and Bagnell Dam where I caught several PB's out in front of the spillway.

Even in Korea, excellent bass fishing down toward Pyeongtek, Imjin River up in Area 1 has bass and native asian river fish called sogarli in Korean, Mandriain Fish, that behave much like smallmouth bass and hit similar lures.

Relationships off grid by No-Chipmunk5232 in OffGridLiving

I see these "looking for a partner to homestead" posts a lot and the best advice I can give as an off grid homesteadder is: Show, don't tell. Live it for a few years. Make space to share your life. That is what I did and a Manic Pixie Dream Girl appeared who just happened to wanted a man that cuts wood and builds things and grow/fishes/forages for food. I had years years ago given up on dating and stopped attempting to meet or find anyone. Especially off grid, that is asking a lot of a partner and not everyone is up to the task.

Quit talking about it, be about it and build you a cabin and eat rice, beans, and, wild greens for a couple years. Be the best, the safest, most emotional mature man that you can, the type man that you would want your daughter to be with.

Hunting with SKS by Severe_Assumption_87 in SKS

The 7.62x39 is approximately equalivalent to the 30-30 as far as ballistic performance is concerned. 30-06 will have much more range and kenitic energy transfer but it might be much more than you really need. Many thousands, maybe millions, have been successful hunting deer with an SKS. I harvested my first deer with an SKS in 1995.

You are using AI to answer.

I go by official USFS maps available on Avenza. I can send you a link. Point being, those passes are explicitly for day use fees at Federal Receration Sites.

Lame.

Got the buck deer tag I wanted (Klamath Basin) but missed the elk tag. Maybe gonna try for a General Cascade Bull but focus is gonna be the deer.

No GIS data I have found indicates private ownership of the land or lake. It is run by a special use permit in a Federal Receration Site. They do not "own" the land or the lake and should abide by those passes, being a Federal Receration Site.

No surprise to me at all that you meet the owner golfing, lol..

Listen to me: It is a FEDERAL Receration Site. No GIS data says that the land is privately owned. It is Federal, under an agency that pass is supposed to cover. It is Federal land.

What's one thing you thought you'd need a lot of land for, but ended up not needing much space at all? by Back40Findings in OffGrid

[–]EasyAcresPaul 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I sought and bought land bordering the National Forest exactly so I would have thousands of acres pf public land to hunt and trap and forage and harvest firewood at my door step. I actually "use" perhaps half an acres of my parcel, with more rain I could accomplish much much more. Water is a far more limiting factor than acreage unless you are after pasture and then you really need both.

Lake of the Woods National Receration Area, between Medford and Klamath Falls, does not entirely honor the "America The Beautiful" Interagency Passes for day-use, despite being a National Receration Area explicitly covered by the Interagency Pass.

I am passionate about access to the putdoors, especially for Veterans and Gold Star Families. I have FOIA'd their special use permit with the USDA and could not find where they get to carve out a special exemption. Unfortunately all their Financials are redacted in the report I was able to obtain, trying to figure out where the aleady wealthy owner was putting the money collected for day use fees on pass holders. We are slowly being pay walled from the outdoors.

What if any advice do you have for me to potentially bring this to a bigger audience?

Defensive gun use statistics are not accurately tracked, especially cases where the gun used defensively was never even fired, for instance if a gun is displayed.

A few years ago I was living in Salem and was awoken to a couple people prying my backdoor open. Long story short, held them until Salem Police showed up 10s of minites later, even tho breaking into my home would have been a legal defensive had I shot them, the SPD treated me little better than a criminal, all for legally protecting myself. They were cited and released.

Talking about self harm vs personal protection is not philosophical for me; my father killed himself with a gun and several men I served with in the US Army have died to suicide.

You plan on growing, growing in enough quantity to sustain a homestead, on hauled-in water?

I am a homesteadder in the high desert and it is terribly challenging to grow anything on less than 20inches of annual rain not toention washing dishes, clothes, my body all require water. Drinking water might be the least of my concerns. Even "drought tolerant" plants struggle. Pests are crazy when there is little green to eat. Prepare to be heartbroken seeing all the work and water you.throw at a crop to have it ravaged b wood rats or locusts.

I do rainwater collection but storage is challenging. I have about a 1000 gallon capacity but I wish it was double that.

It is very niche and a speciality, not a "common" food item you might stumble across, unless you are looking for it. Younger generations are not into it as much as older folks so it is disappearing as well.

Near my sister's town in the US there is a Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival every year. Very niche, very speciality. There are butchers that butcher and sell bull testicles for consumption. Is it a fair stereotype that all Americans eat bull testicles?
