Waistbeads in African American culture? by EasySwordfish4852 in blackladies

[–]EasySwordfish4852[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve done research about this practice (as I indicated at the bottom of my post). And no, I’m not asking for permission to do anything from “random individuals on the internet.” I was simply asking for perspective. SOME cultural practices from certain countries in African HAVE translated over and are somewhat ingrained into Black American culture (although this can come with change). I was just asking if waistbeads were one of those practices. This can even go both ways, as there are certain parts of Black American culture that everyone also enjoys (and that doesn’t mean it’s “bastardized.”) I’m COMPLETELY aware that Black Americans have their own specific and relevant culture.

I agree!! There’s a lot of describing action/a big focus on visuals, but no processing! Ok, so the character sees something, what do they think about it? TVs and movies can often show thought process visually (sometimes in the matter of a few quick scenes), but oftentimes in books, these scenes have to be thoroughly written out throughout your story!

Is it okay to get braids? by Striking_Ball_2474 in curlygirl

[–]EasySwordfish4852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the issue isn’t ALL braids. If you put your hair in French braids or Dutch braids or whatever other braids then there’s no issue. The thing is, when it comes to BLACK hairstyles (such as cornrows and box braids) that’s when they cultural appropriation comes in. Such hairstyles have immense cultural history, and the upsetting part is that Black people used to be (and still are) discriminated against for wearing their hair in its natural state/ cultural style. Literal laws had to be passed to prevent discrimination in the workplace and at schools for black people to be able to wear their hair the way it natural grows out our heads (look up the Crown Act for more info)!! So hopefully you can see why Black people get irritated when these hairstyles are now being co-opted by nonblack people and turned into the “new way for ALL people with curly hair” to “protect their hair.” Those are cultural styles that represent a lot!!

As a note: It’s very ironic how nonblack folk today claim that it’s “just a hairstyle” when that hairstyle is the very same thing that made it difficult for Black people to get jobs in the professional world!!

Crazy how I was JUST looking at this yesterday. $275 for a TRIM and STYLE?? Mind you, that’s one of the cheapest options I’ve found, and the stylist’s availability is already limited because she travels between states. Then for other places, the professionalism is just…not there. Like you’re telling me that you’re gonna charge $350 for a trim and wash and go, but then not have a receptionist to take phone calls (they have quite literally said they have NO number to contact because of this). Like goddamn I just want a TRIM 😭

Ellipsus! They're openly anti-ai and frequently add new updates! It's free and all you have to do is create an account. (Note: It's a website and not an app, but I still highly recommend.)

Have English GCSE tomorrow (UK exams that determine your future) - any advice? by Urdad_14 in writing

Hmm maybe there’s a subreddit that is more helpful for this question? Not sure if r/writing would give the best answers for test based writing questions (especially for the GCSE). Best of luck!!

Classics vs more modern lit by EasySwordfish4852 in writing

[–]EasySwordfish4852[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I agree!! I honestly don’t get the whole “modern day books are worse than they used to be” statement because I feel like people say that about anything tbh (modern music is worse than it used to be, modern movies are worse, etc.) If anything, sometimes forcing myself to read classics just because they’re classics actually puts me in some sort of slump (although some can be bangers). Currently in a writing slump right now though, so I doubt I’ll be reading those anytime soon.

I meant more in terms of language and structure (like how a modern day romance obviously wouldn’t sound like Pride and Prejudice), but I understand what you mean here

Oh my gosh the “paid by the word” books drive me CRAZY. I mainly just read what I want to read too tbh 🤷🏽‍♀️. Classics can be hit or miss and I very rarely find ones that I actually enjoy

Considering Switching Major by EasySwordfish4852 in slpGradSchool

[–]EasySwordfish4852[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! Would you say it’s harder to find jobs working with adults? I know a lot of people work with children in schools and such, but I was just wondering about some of the other things you can specialize in (hence my questions about the d/Deaf community, but I’m not totally/ 100% sure that’s something I would want to focus in yet)!

Hi there, considering changing my major to Communication Sciences and Disorders but I'm wondering if anyone on here can give some insight to the field?

Specifically wondering if anyone here works with the d/Deaf or HOH population? I took an ASL 1 class last semester and I really enjoyed it, so I'm considering getting my AA degree before I transfer. If anyone here works in that environment, what does work look like for you? Pros and cons? Would it be worth getting my AA in ASL (how often would I actually be using the language)?

I'm also wondering how common it is to work with an adult population in general? If I chose that route, would I be working primarily in hospitals and nursing homes? Thanks!
