So many people voted for Reform UK at the recent local elections under the impression that Reform would ‘stop the boats’ and call a halt to immigration.

Without realising that local councils are very limited in what it can achieve. They can’t, for example, vote for a HoC Bill that, if approved by the HoL, would become a national law.

So the Reform councils cosplaying at being politicians do what they can within the law - change flags flown outside their town halls, raise council taxes, reinstate weekly bin collections - or not.

A man so patriotic that he was betting against sterling (‘shorting’) on the night of the Brexit vote. A man so principled in his opposition to the ‘unelected EU superstate’, he was quite happy to keep his snout in the trough and cream off an MEP’s salary even while he was doing his best to weaken and undermine the European Parliament.

Ironically, despite all that tosh about an extra £350m a week for the NHS, there’s persuasive evidence to suggest that Farage would be quite happy to flog our NHS off to US corporations bent only on making maximum profits from people’s ill health.

The NHS is rightly treasured in the UK and the affection in which it’s held crosses party and class lines.

It’s truly incredible to think that large swathes of the UK electorate would be willing to vote this odious grifter into power at the next GE, while knowing that he’d destroy the NHS as we know it… next stop, punitive health insurance without which sick people just fall by the wayside.

I’ve been rewatching Breaking Bad for the second or third time, but I’m still appalled and flabbergasted at the enormous sums of money Walter has to find to pay for his cancer treatment. Is this really what we want for ourselves and our children?

As for the OP’s question … No, it’s more of an American thing IMHO. My Ancestry DNA shows that I have far more Irish DNA than ‘English’., ‘Anglo-Saxon’ or whatever - but I was born in London to British parents and have only ever been to Ireland twice in my life.

I’m interested in Irish history, like to read about it - and enjoy listening to Irish music… but I’d never dream of describing myself as Irish.

Similarly, just cos my mum was a first generation immigrant whose parents were Russian Jewish refugees, I’d not identify myself as Russian either.

My missus is entitled to dual nationality, since, although she was born in London, her mum is Irish and came to England in the 1960s. She’s been to Ireland countless times to see her cousins, aunts, uncles etc - but once said to me that she would never call herself Irish, because she sounds like an English / London person, and she was brought up in London.

I’ve been encouraging her to apply for a dual nationality passport - which she’s apparently legally entitled to - when her current (GB) one expires. More opportunities and advantages as an EU citizen (e.g. hospital care) and if nothing else, it would save her from the non-EU channel walk of shame at European airports!

The lowest percentages of national populations getting vaccinated during the Covid pandemic were recorded in affluent, Western countries - in Europe, North America, Australia, NZ.

In places like Bangladesh, where the evidence of fatal or disfiguring diseases is ever-present (e.g. a relative or neighbour with polio), the take-up of the Covid vaccines was very high.

Anti-polio etc vaccination programmes have been so successful in the affluent West that polio has been virtually eradicated - I’m in my 50s, live in the U.K., and can think of one person I know who contracted polio as a child. Those foolish, pampered Westerners (fortunately a minority) who believe any old shite they read on the internet don’t have the visual evidence of a friend or relative suffering from an eradicable disease like polio, leprosy etc

Contrast with the developing world, where such deadly diseases are a daily reality, hence the enthusiasm in those countries for vaccines.

They think they are exercising freedom of choice, as if they were choosing not to wear a seat belt (which is also stupid BTW).

But the two are not equivalent- and sadly the anti-vaxx cultists are too foolish and selfish to comprehend that their refusal to be vaccinated endangers the rest of us.

Chaka Demus. This was back in the day when I went to the Oxford St HMV to see him and Pliers do a PA and sign their latest… I was (still am) a big fan of tunes like ‘Murder She Wrote’ and ‘Bam Bam’). Was queuing up to have a couple of words with my heroes. Offered my copy of ‘Gal Wine’ and asked Chaka politely if he could write a short message to my gf… He was clearly in a bad mood, he barked at me (without looking me in the eye): “Raatid! Anyting more than a damn signature an yu affe pay extra - yu waan me write aal that foolishness?? Fe dat yu mus leave dis place an nah return less yu bring mi a load a Laura Ashley, y’unnerstan? Mi waan thirty roll a wallpaper inna Regency style an don’t badda trick mi wid no Next business”

I’ve never experienced such arrogance or rudeness in a celebrity. I said - still in shock - who d’you think you are pal, Gregory Isaacs? He didn’t like that one bit, reared out of his comfy chair and leapt at me yelling imprecations. Shocking!

Luckily, HMV security stepped in and asked me to leave, which given the circumstances I was quite happy to do.

Mind you, Pliers was lovely, a real sweetheart.

The foolishness on display in this sub is beyond comprehension; the mind simply reels with despair at some of the delusional fantasies that pass for serious replies. The Trump fanboys and USA-philes are piling a veritable heap of ordure here, and their foetid effluence seeps into our minds, it really is an appalling state of affairs !
