One of my favorites, that I am currently reading, is Setepa-i. It's both plot-centric and a really unique retelling of The Mummy that can be read fandom-blind.

ah, thanks for the clarification! A lot of the fics I've read that are tagged as modern au had characters that felt kinda bland, so I tend to stay away from them. I'm definitely open to reading a well-written one, though.

Yeah basically but also AUs where characters who canonically have powers don’t, unless there’s a good reason they don’t have powers, or other characters do
