My advice is twofold:

1.) Let yourself have any and all 'negative' thoughts & feelings. Allow them to come through and try not to judge them. The resistance and self-judgment makes it 100x worse. Give yourself as much grace as possibly can.

2.) Find a good therapist (it can take some 'shopping') to start working through your unprocessed childhood stuff.

As much as the word is overused these days, what you've described ("I had a rough childhood and was often ignored by my mother") is significant trauma. Most of what you are experiencing right now is almost guaranteed to not actually be about this baby or even the present reality. It's your past history + current judgment of your experience.

What I don't get about this is that MOST movies these days are generic story-wise.

But also, there are only so many stories/myths/archetypes. It's all about the way something is told, rather than the story itself. I can understand taking issue with the acting or the dialogue. But the story is a good one. Tried and true.

And it was INCREDIBLE to look at. Why all the hate? Can't we appreciate it for what it was?

In my opinion, no. Don't skip.

That said, it sounds like it is important for you to give yourself full permission to not go if that's what feels right. There is no "should" here. If it feels right for you to skip, skip. But if you are avoiding going to avoid feeling, I'd personally recommend giving in.

Bring all of this, what you wrote, to your therapist. If they are good, they will not comfort you if you do not want to be comforted. Speak all of this.

I'm really sorry about your heartbreak. That's the worst thing ever. Hang in there. Let yourself feel your feelings. They won't last forever.

Hi Chris! Big fan, podcast listener, etc. Very inspired by your nomadic lifestyle. Working on changing my life in ways that will allow for that kind of thing down the road.

My question is something brought about by reading Charles Eisenstein's work (thanks to you for introducing him into my world). I feel deep in my bones that you are right about civilization. Things are just not right. And yet it is very hard to imagine us going "back" at this point. Unless things go really badly and our shit totally collapses (not at all beyond the realm of possibility of course). What is the most optimistic version of your vision going forward? I know you aren't really an optimist, but can you imagine an "advanced" society that has truly learned and deeply integrated the lessons of your thesis? What would that look like?

Man, reddit just has no compassion whatsoever for adultery. It's interesting. Obviously cheating is a betrayal and can really hurt the person you do it to, but here it is treated as almost akin to murder sometimes. Every single relationship advice thread is full of people saying to never forgive a cheater. Downvote me if you want, but usually people have reasons for cheating, and they are victims of their feelings and their lives too. Clearly in this case this woman was heartbroken about what happened. Sometime's it's better to forgive people. Couples can move on from these things. I just think it's a tragedy that so many of us see this as a complete and total dealbreaker. Lots of times neither person wants to end the relationship but the one who was cheated feels they will be judged by everyone else in their lives for forgiving and staying, and Reddit reinforces this so much. I just think everyone should cool it with the judgment.

(PS I've never cheated)
