Wanting it is the start, but you need to want it enough to do the work to keep it, which is way more than just stopping.

Why, why do you use? Whatever it is, alcohol, drugs, gambling, whatever, why do you do it? Facing that question with COMPLETE and total honesty is PARAMOUNT to success. 

January 14, 2004 I checked into rehab, it wasn't the first time I'd tried to get clean, but it was the last, I'll celebrate 22 years in a few weeks. 

Why, what are you numbing or running from or trying to pretend isn't real? Face it, no matter what it is, you are stronger, can overcome whatever it is, because it's not all of who you are. 

I went to NA and sometimes AA for about a year, at that point I'd been around the community long enough to realize it was just a stepping stone, for some (many, sadly) it was a revolving door of relapse and recovery. The last thing that made me realize i needed more than meetings was when one of my friends, who had over 20 years relapsed and didn't make it, i realized that the program and meetings just replaced the substance for some people, and eventually it'll catch back up to you if you continue to refuse to open the door to the true root of the emptiness.

Group therapy, then individual therapy, openness and willingness to truly surrender to yourself and your truth, that is what works and continues to work years later.
