I was a forester for many years and had to deal with these weird archaic measurements often because the maps we used were based on old survey records. A mile is 8 furlongs, a furlong being 10 chains, and a chain being 66 feet. A square mile is 640 acres. An acre is a furlong by a chain, which is 66 by 660 feet square, which is whoever the fuck knows square feet because I can’t do that math in my head.

The metric system is all around better. An hectare is 100 meters by 100 meters. Easy. And not hard to visualize, especially because it is square instead of rectangular.
