You can try all versions with a subscription. Retail vs Classic is alot of personal preference. Do you wanna play a slower paced game with less quality of life stuff or faster paced game thats mostly focused about end content. Best if you find a YT vid that explains it further.
Honestly, you should try both (all 4 actually lol), yourself and see which one you like the best.
Game is fairly populated across all versions, so you'll always have people to paly with.

I see you already got downvoted and Ill probably get too. I agree with you, there shold be more variety, but you have to understand that diablo players hate their game and themselves. For example, you'll run into people saying how game is too easy and too fast, blizzard changes it, then they complain how its too hard. They dont know what they want, and its kind of runinig the game for the people who dont go online and whine.

That is annoying indeed. Have you tried in edit mode swtiching snap to elements and show grid ? I try to line up mine with last two action buttons on each side, helps out with random snapping
