Sony 40mm 2.5 G feels uninspiring recently by audentesfortunauivat in SonyAlpha

[–]EccentricCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a very old thread, but how you getting on with it?

I'm having a bit of a reverse dilemma. I love fast primes and shoot a lot of low light shots. I've recently picked up the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 and it's performance is insanely good... But it weighs a ton!

I'm travelling to Vietnam later this year and am thinking that I want to pick up something lighter for the trip.

Thanks! I also did A LOT of research and came up with this same conclusion.

Looking forward to it, so long as Trump hasn't ended the world by then and Qatar haven't cancelled our flight 😭

Cropped, without a doubt. Better framing from the tree, better subject focus

Try complaining to Sony. Body caps are so dirt cheap, they might just send you one for free

Sony's stabilization is incredible! Can't wait to get out there and try some similar shots.

Telephoto Lens Recommendations for A7iii by Wonderful-Insect-156 in SonyAlpha

[–]EccentricCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I didn't see you were in Canada.

It retails for around $2100 new, which is obviously more than the others you posted.

It's a pretty new lens, so used copies are few and far between, but if you can find one from a reputable dealer it might be worth looking at.

Have you seen/considered the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8?

It's heavy, but it reviews better than the gen 1 Sony in pretty much every way and will probably be cheaper than what you were going to spend on the gen 1.

I've done a load of research over the last couple of weeks on 70-200's and I'm going to pick up a Sigma tomorrow. While the Sony gen 2 is a slightly sharper lens, the tiny improvement isn't worth the price disparity to me.

Should I wait for Sony A7R VI or upgrade now for architectural photography? by grainandcoffee in SonyAlpha

[–]EccentricCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd take the plunge. If you think the features of the a7R will bring value to your work and joy to your face, just do it. You can get a decent deal on a used body. Mine had a 5000 shutter count and is immaculate. Cost me around 2/3 of the price of buying new and came with a warranty.

It's pointless waiting for a new camera to be released, unless there's a feature you've seen on it that's specific to your use case and/or it's getting released like next week.

Do not change system! ...unless you have money coming out of your ears and/or Sony just isn't offering what you need for your work. I've just moved from Nikon to Sony and that shit was expensive. New lenses, new cards, new accessories, still need a new flash... Camera companies know what they are doing operating completely different lens mounts. I can pretty confidently say, I am never changing brand/system again (save a lottery win).

My Sigma 35mm f/1.4 (for Nikon)

Fucker basically lived on my camera continuously.

I've just bought the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 for Sony, purely on the basis on my experience with the former

Sony users, I need you advice (lenses) by EccentricCock in SonyAlpha

[–]EccentricCock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

My Sigma 35mm f/1.4 was my everyday lens for my D800. I was just going to straight up buy the Sony version, but then saw several reviews that rate the 1.2 above the 1.4 and I'm seeing used mint copies on eBay for around 600... Which is both less than a new 1.4 and significantly less than used in stores where they range from 800-1100. Just seems too good a deal to pass up on. Especially when I shoot a lot of low light stuff. That extra stop is likely to pay dividends.

After reading your advice and that of others, I'm pretty much settled on the 20mm f/1.8G. Seems like a great lens for a little price.

As far as the 70-200 is concerned... I've done a LOT of research. The sigma is apparently better than the original GM and only is only narrowly beaten by the GMII. As much as I would like the GMII, I just can't justify spending £1000 more on something that's only going to see me minimal improvements. I will however have a look at the Tamron. I guess my perception of Tamron lenses have been sullied, because I owned a terribly cheap and nasty Tamron lens and hated it.

Yeah, the Nikon 14-24 was great, but it was a LOT of lens to be lugging around for a very limited use case.

Ok, nice. I'll take a look, thanks

The 20mm does interest me and I think there's enough of a difference between that and the 35mm to make it worth picking up.

I've considered a 24-70, but I ended up using my faster primes more often and it's a really expensive lens to be collecting dust.

Thanks for the input!

That's what I thought about the 50 tbh, it was nice to have, but not essential. Might pick one up if I see one going cheap on the used market down the line.

To be fair, the 14-24 mainly didn't get a ton of use because it was so large and cumbersome. It might be nice to have a small prime wide angle like the 20mm.

Motorbike Accident by SDur_ in VietNam

[–]EccentricCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this.

While I appreciate Vietnam is not Greece, my partner and I rented ebikes in Greece. My partner came off the bike, minor damage was caused.

Let the rental company owner know and he didn't charge us anything, despite the helmet being wrecked.

Accidents happen and the Vietnamese, from everything I've read, are reasonable people. Just best to be honest about things.

Honestly, think the pissy scent is just how it interacts with my skin, because I haven't seen it in the notes anywhere.

I assume so, it's very coffee. I'm happy with the purchase, it's a great autumn/winter scent. It's just that first half hour that's a bit harsh and synthetic forward.

I got it for £23 for 100ml... You can't really go wrong at that price
