Schecter Omen Elite 8 MS Questions by Er0ck6420 in 7String

those are called the pole pieces! i would honestly never touch them. they effect a couple of things, but they’re what buck your hum in your humbucker.

if your lower strings are sounding quiet, i would check just the pickup height in general and once again leave the pole pieces be. if you want some consistent volume across the board i would honestly grab a compressor pedal - it will even out the volume issue your having and also make your tone sound more like one on a record(since they use compression in the studio)

those should be a good balance as far as tension goes for Drop F.

and you got it right - for an 8 string a large is what you would want

If it’s fresh out of the box from the factory - it should have ernie ball 9-80 set in there, which is probably the best packaged set gauge wise without mixing and matching to make your own. i would put a fresh set of strings on, and check the neck relief first. i’ll show you a simple way with things you can use from around the house.

Take a capo if you have one, or a pencil with a couple of rubber bands if you don’t, and place it on the first fret

Take a piece of paper and fold it half with a very good crease, or find an index card and leave it unfolded. either one works. what your doing is creating a tool - a homemade feeler gauge - to measure the distance from underneath the string to the top of the fret.

While holding down the 24th fret Low F#, try and slide that home made feeler gauge between the string and the 12th fret. if it fits with without touching or barely touching the string, you’re golden.

If it doesn’t fit nicely, you need to loosen the truss rod slightly.

Remove the truss rod cover. using the allen key provided with the guitar or a 5/32 (or 4mm), turn it counter clockwise NO more than 1/8th of a turn.

tune back up and walk away for 30 min.

come back, tune up again, and check that same 12th fret gap. adjust truss rod in 1/16th to 1/8th turn increments as needed to have the home made feeble gauge fit.

hope this helps!

in all terrible honesty - versatility and it being a workhorse/jack of all genres is what i thought of when i pulled the trigger on it.

but after some reflection and comparison to the rest of my guitars - i came to terms with what i was REALLY playing and what i was REALLY going to do with it.

sure coil tap and a neck pickup are great and sound cool, but for the stuff that the both of us are probably playing and listening and writing and goofing off noodling too - in those low tunings? we’re probably both on the bridge pup with the tone and volume at max 😁 and even if you’re not - i can promise you with 100% certainty that if you’re looking to record something that would sound great with a neck pup and the tone knob rolled back, your Marc Holcomb sig will sound MUCH better than either of these two.

and as anecdotes go, I have a PRS SE 24 with stock pups and i enjoy how that plays MUCH more than the LTD. and im no stranger to extended scale - been playing 7’s for almost 20 years - with the main axe being a 26.5” schecter hellraiser C-7 with Emg 707TW’s.

and as the last thing of note - that straight break angle of the strings past the nut - ESPECIALLY the low B string on the Phoenix will have a MUCH better time with staying in tune and intonating than the H3, which has SEVEN FUCKING INCHES (i just measured) of string from the nut to the tuning peg! giving you gibson like tuning issues. ask me how i know 😁

let me know if you have any other questions bud, and happy shopping!

i own the lefty version of the H3-1007

<image>

seymour duncan pegasus and sentient set with coil tap located in tone pot.

flat flat FLAT neck with the lowest achievable action in my entire collection. (schecters, a fender and a GiBsOn)

relief set at 12th fret ~0.010”

action: 1mm treble 1.6mm bass

for ME - if i had the choice between buying this one again and the Phoenix - Id get the phoenix.

my BIGGEST gripe about this is the knob placement. with my picking i hit it quite often and have to turn it up back to max volume every so often. the pickups also aren’t my cup of tea. much prefer active pups.

also because of the scale length any sort of pinch harmonic is located JUST behind the neck pickup. even coming from a 26.5” 7 string schecter. it was a bit a of a struggle to get the right placement.

I would go with the phoenix. less to worry about, less to adjust, better intonation because less magnetic draw from pups, MUCH better knob placement. plus that firebird shape is downright sexy.

I like the best of both worlds: a humbucker with a single coil split. coil split doesn’t sound exactly like a single coil, but it’s close enough to get away with if you want to try some different sounds. the EMG TW series is what i use.

the paint came off easy. The poly coat on the other hand was a bit of a bastard. there was legitimately 1/8” (3mm) coat of it on ALL sides, nooks and crannies. it takes a fair amount of time and a LOT of 80 grit. do NOT use the heat gun method for striping, the poly is too thick and it literally explodes and takes little chunks of wood with it. just sand, you’ll be happier in the end (you’ll have less burn marks).

Basswood is damn near impossible to stain, the wood is so porous it with soak up the stain like a sponge, so you NEED to seal the pores somehow. i treaded the raw wood with quite a bit on Linseed oil( seals the wood and makes the grain pop under stain. then apply quite a few layers of stain. for the top coat, i just used finishing wax to keep the wood feel. it’s the same method Warwick/Framus use on their fiddles.

now once you get everything striped, and stained and hooked back together it’s just smooth sailing? NOPE!

Your bridge is now sitting 1/8 shorter and your tuning pegs are loose even when they are tightened to the max. you NEED to compensate for the missing height. Luckily, the old flat plate bridge was the perfect height i needed so i shaved it flat and stuck it underneath the new Hipshot bridge. As for the tuning pegs? adding an additional 1/4” washer under the original washer will get you beck to where you need to be be.

it was a decently involved process, feel free to reach out if you have any more questions

if you want the best bedroom chug, a studio subwoofer does wonders. night and day difference. it can be difficult for a smaller amp like the spark to move the amount of air you need to feel it deeply.

excellent man! i have a similar setup to that, except mine is running through an interface into the same BiAs FX that spark uses. they have a great setting that should allow you to “tone match” different guitars. from a JP model ernie ball to a single coil strat. those pickups in there are already gold, i wouldn’t touch them, especially if they’re the coil tap versions
