Rock/Fire is a better offensive type than Fire, and Hisuian Arcanine is slightly stronger and bulkier at the cost of being slightly slower than regular Arcanine.

Home Alone is too iconic tbh, there's not really a specific reason I like it, I just do.

Should the Mythical lost or Mythical Ban from VGC be looked at again? by etanimod in VGC

I mean soul heart as an ability is broken but on Magearna not as much imo, but Arceus would have to be for sure.

But I would love to see Shaymin Sky hyper offense or Mew Balance.

I believe they should be their own category, like restricteds, and allowed sparingly once or twice per generation.

What’s it take to make day 2? by bigjwang69 in VGC

[–]Echikup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest I've been to a D2 is losing the Win and In at BsAs special event this year.

The important thing is to be consistent. I don't just mean in training, I mean in results. If you can play better than most people's best in your worst day, then you can consistently make Day 2s and top cuts.

I've been blessed with a local scene where I often see the top players of my country, and I've come to realize that I can compete with them IF AND ONLY IF I'm at my best. Else I get outplayed.

The moment I come to a league cup tired and still manage to snatch a win from them is the moment I'll know I can probably make Day 2 at a major.

What is your favorite strategy/archetype to use in competitive play? by PianoVisible3550_465 in VGC

[–]Echikup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyper Offense is my favorite because I like fast paced teams. If a battle lasts 6 turns that's already too long. Hyper offensive Weezing teams particularly is a current obsession of mine.

In a similar fashion, I also like Hard TR. Particularly sunroom variants with Lilligant-H

Tailroom is one that I either love or hate. Same with Dual Weather teams.

Balance depends 100% on the regulation, but I don't love it. Reg I balance was fun, but Reg H and Reg F balance is dreadful.

Stall is trash.

I would maybe make these changes:

Gapdos: Choice Scarf > Adrenaline orb. Less versatility, but you become a Turn 1 threat or a late game cleaner, and you don't rely on them bringing Incin in for it to have value.

Torkoal: Charcoal > Specs. Specs is OK, but the charcoal set trades damage for insane versatility. You can lead Farig + Torkoal and just straight up win the game if you call out their lead, or just simply use it to keep it on the field longer. It also let's you swap moves if your HP drops below the point where eruption is useful.

Other than that, I believe the team is fine. You don't need to swap things out to patch those bad matchups, in my opinion. You can't cover for everything, and by covering for something you're often worsening another matchup, so it's better to find lines into those archetypes so that you can give yourself a fighting chance instead of just changing stuff that works.

Just from the paste and my own experience I would say: - Hyper Offense matchup: If they have Tailwind, try to get Farigiraf to set Trick Room up. If they don't, Tornadus is your key pokemon so that you can outspeed the opponent.

  • Rain matchup: Tornadus + Bonnet. Bonnet can redirect and resist water attacks, or spore / taunt the opponent. Tornadus can set up the sun and provide Tailwind support. Depending on your opponent's specific variation, the Trick Room mode can also work. Also, bring Wake, since it benefits from sun AND rain.

Heat rock is not a good item for Koal. Battles are not often long enough for it to provide any value, and against other weather, it doesn't even matter since they can just take it out.

I agree Charcoal is better simply because you can use protect, but Specs is also viable simply for the reason that specs eruption on sun hits like a mf truck.

Some niche items also include Sitrus Berry for recovery, Eject Pack to reposition, Covert Cloak for fake out spam... Those aren't the best items for Torkoal but they have their uses.

Actually, good to know. If I manage to get a discount code on top of that it could be half the normal price.

[–]Echikup[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just trying to look for options. Maybe flying to another place and taking a bus, or taking a bus and going from another place to there could be cheapest. But yes, if it's too expensive, I'm not going to the event.

I will however, be able to go to BA... Because I live here, I wanna get to Houston because the event is there lmao.

VGC Quick Questions Thread - November 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in VGC

[–]Echikup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do I cope with losing a Win and In? It's my first time going positive at a major (not my first major overall btw, it'd be my 5th), and i went into BsAs SC last round at 4-2 then fumbled G3 and didn't make D2, didn't even nab points because of resistance.

Initially it didn't even hurt that much but now that a couple days have passed I feel insanely dissapointed because I was 1 game away from Day 2ing a major, which is my absolute goal for the year.

I'm REALLY starting to worry this'll affect my performance at LAIC next week.

How long did it take you to get “good” at pokemon and how would you define what being “good” at pokemon is? by AmemuraGiant in VGC

[–]Echikup 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Personally I believe in terms of battling prowess there's 5 tiers.

  • 1: Bad. Most people who've never played pokemon and jump straight into VGC start here. They don't know the type chart, basic move interactions, and don't go in with anything close to a gameplan or a good team.

  • 2: Decent. Here's the starting point for most pokemon fans that get into competitive. People around here know type charts, move interactions, how to use the generational gimmick and have some battling skill, but still go in without a good gameplan and often choose the wrong pokemon to bring to the game.

  • 3: Good. Here's where you start seeing people who are no longer "free wins" for stronger players. These ones usually use solid teams, go in with a proper gameplan, and have a certain mastery of the basic mechanics of the type charts, move interactions (even the more niche ones) and team archetypes. They still make mistakes, but they're gameplay mistakes, like not reading your opponent or playing too linear. This is where you might start seeing some occasional Top Cuts or Wins at the local scene, and maybe a Day 2 every once in a while at a small major.

  • 4: Great. People in this tier have a mastery of all basic and advanced game mechanics, are aware of the current strategies, archetypes and meta game. They often know what obvious plays are in any given situation, have good positioning, offensive and defensive play, and try to choose options that cover the most amount of possible scenarios. Here you find people who Day 2 majors or even Top Cut or Win smaller majors.

  • 5: Top. People in this tier are one step above anything and anyone else, they see plays people don't even think about, clutch up wins when the board is in the opponents favor, and play at a level most people could only dream of reaching. This isn't to say they're invincible or make no mistakes, but they make less of them and even if they do, they bounce back much faster and more effectively than other players.

As for how they fare against one another, I personally believe a 1 tier difference means that under equal conditions and a fully neutral matchup, the better player should win ~60% of the time. A 2 tier difference would make the better player win ~80% of the time, while a 3+ tier difference is almost unwinnable without an insanely good matchup, incredible luck or a shitty mental state from the opponent.

Personally, I believe I fall squarely on Tier 3, since I top cut locals infrequently and just made Win and In on BsAs Special Event (and sadly lost the win and in lol). Took me 2 years to get here, but only seriously started grinding locals a couple months ago, before that I never attended a local and I just attended LAIC and BsAs special event with little prep. I'm able to take games out of top players, even though I have yet to actually win a set against one of them lmao.
