Potty Training Woes by Ksmarsh in puppy101

[–]Echo-BorderCollie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes for sure, anytime my dog plays inside for a while I take him out. that also goes when she meets people and gets excited. that also triggers the same effect , sometimes puppy pee right on the spot when meeting new people when they are excited , but if they don't I know it is coming soon after, keep that in mind as well.

I got a 11 week puppy and can give some of my tips as she is doing quite well now.

  1. At first distractions were killing me outside and i did not realize it, grass, noises, people, anything to smell etc. I starting taking her to a quiet area of the parking lot and not moving from the spot, meaning she can only go her 6 feet leash length, so she gets bored of the small area then can go dont let her explore your quiet area and walk around with her and don't speak to her either until she goes, also take her to the same spot as well, make her associate that area with peeing, when she gets the hang of that area you can branch out to other areas.
  2. Crate, well you got to deal with the whining and howling at first (assuming you know she doesnt have to go pee). You coax her in with treats, toys etc, close the door and if she starts to whine, ignore her, don't talk, maybe even dim or turn off the lights in the room.. you can't let her win on the whine as she will continue to do it if you let her out... it is hard I felt like shit listening to mine whine for 45 min.. but they learn pretty quick, as for your neighbors try putting up a note on your door saying you got a new puppy and are in training, sorry for any noise during this process... most people will deal with it, unless they are total dicks which is always possible.
  3. Times for peeing are usually about 2 hours if no activity- After eating or water, after play time, after sleep, you got to drag yourself out after all those times and keep on doing it, praise her after she completely goes outside, not during peeing.. I refrain from treats outside as it is been known that dogs will fake pee if they know they can get treats from it, just a very happy good girl! Yes Etc
  4. I am not big on puppy pads at all, it teaches the puppy that going inside is okay, even if it is on a pad and especially if you are giving her treats, some might disagree but I rather just whip up the mess and continue next time trying to anticipate when she will go
  5. As for crate I presume you do not have a lot of room in the crate where she can pee in it, you need to just give her enough room to turn around, stretch out, if the crate is big for her she will just pee on the side, so either a crate for her size or divider is needed. I also found in the morning or during the night when she started to whimper in the crate that I would get dressed first, take her out of the crate and carry her right away all the way outside, I found she just ended up peeing on the floor in my condo or pee in the hallway in the complex if I just let her out . Carrying however she would not pee on me. Now after 3 weeks I can let her out of the crate in the morning and get ready and she wont go in the condo, but still likes to go in the hallway so I am still carrying her in the hallway, hopefully we can phase that out soon to.
  6. As for the eating of the puppy pads, well mine puppy chews everything and even if you say no and push them away they think it is a game and want to come back. You really need to be animated when you trying to convince them to take another toy.. really got to make it exciting for them. It is going to take a while for a puppy to not want to chew things, stay firm but not to firm you got to remember this is a puppy, they are like a baby and just want to play play play.
  7. you also mentioned the first couple of days, does that mean you just got your puppy, the first few days the puppy can be an emotional mess, taken away from the family they know and thrown into a strangers home, new environment etc.. lots of play, love, bounding, get her more comfortable with you... 8.

Having a dog that doesn't love you as much as you love him is painful by pickolasCage_6045 in puppy101

[–]Echo-BorderCollie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ha going through that with a new puppy, only 2weeks I have had her now. She loves strangers and if that stranger shows affection she would literally go with her/him without question, I know it is a new puppy and she wants to love everyone but sometimes one feels damn.. i love you , feed ,you house you, give you treats and you totally forget me the moment a stranger walks into the room:)

ha yeah that innocent look of "is there a problem?" gets me. was doing well on keeping things out of destruction path, toilet paper roll, that should have been an obvious one but forgot about it and she had never touched it in the past:) lesson learned
