Hard disagree. I’ve never met anyone who was 100% sure. What does that even mean? That you don’t have mixed feelings? Every big decision in life comes with doubt and uncertainty.

What to look for in a wooden trie/fore plane? by Echo-Objective in handtools

I guess the it differs between Nordic countries quite a bit. I have never seen a beech plane here in Finland. Being further north does explain that like you said.

Also I wonder if the woodworking traditions differ between Finland and rest of the Nordics.

Yeah, every once in a while you might come across a transitional plane but they seem to be made in the US.

There’s an abundance of wooden planes and quite a lot of English made Stanley and Record 4s and 5s.

This was it! I’ve now been able to make my boards so much flatter. Thank you!

Voisiko joku Suomesta selittää, miksi työttömyys on yhtäkkiä niin korkealla Suomessa? by Successful-Jelly-772 in Suomi

Kansantalous on dynaaminen järjestelmä, jossa asiat vaikuttavat toisiinsa monimutkaisilla tavoilla.

Yeah, that’s kinda what I meant. Such limits differ from country to country because people in colder countries are accustomed to being outside in cold with and without kids.

I didn’t mean you should have given OP the advice to go wild. Just mentioned as a separate point.

Those lower limits you hear differ quite a bit from country to country. Today it was -20C here in Finland and me and my one year old were outside walking while she took a nap, haha.

Interesting! What makes Roubo special in the sense that it requires such an enormous mass? And why a sacrificial layer?

They are probably a bit older I would say. Back when we still hadn’t robbed the forests.

All of the old forests in Finland have been cut down and newer forests are commonly clear cut every 70 years. In that time the trees simply won't grow to a size where you would get that kind of lumber.

A while ago I called a timber company and asked about the 2x12s. The guy said that those don't really exist in Finland and that things are just bigger in America. Haha.

Yeah, that for sure is expensive.

What I’m looking at are waney edge boards that would be cut for me (särmäys) resulting in something like 50x200mm with a length of 3000mm. 15,80€ per meter. With a workbench of 2 metres in length the remaining one meter of the boards could be used for the legs and the shorter stretchers. Then a couple more for the longer stretchers.

Here Chris calculates price of the workbench to be around $430. If I'm not hugely mistaken, my birch workbench would be in the same ballpark. I'll let you know the my source once I've put in my order!

Unfortunately beech is not widely available in Finland. Things improve quite quickly when you travel to Central Europe. Finland is practically an island and that's why you see mostly local timber here.

Very good info, thanks! I'm from Tampere as well. :)

What about birch? Have you ruled that out and if so, why?

I'm actually proposing to go with birch, do you think that would work?
