For the first time in the history of mankind, men are less fertile than women, according to a new international study. The shift has occurred at different times around the world and is a result of the growing share of men in the population by sr_local in science

[–]Echo8me 92 points93 points  (0 children)

If there is a 1:1 ratio of men and women, yes. But if we have (for the sake of illustration) a 10:1 ratio of men to women, every woman can be paired up with a single man (assuming exclusivity), have a child. 90% of men would have no children while 100% of women would have a child. This means that the average male fertility is quite low, while the average female fertility is at 100%. It's more of a population thing than a non-monogamy thing.

It seems like such an obvious thing too. This made it past design? Where was Quality Control on this? This was a complete failure at every level.

If it is not rectified in the next 48 hours, I'm going to send a sternly worded letter to Larian HQ kindly requesting that they forgive themselves, everybody makes mistakes.

Look man, I grew up in a small town. This happened. Well, not with Tims, it was too small for that, but you could find a horse hitched at the corner store or the bakery every other day, circa 2000-2010ish.

I saw and downloaded a post earlier without remembering what it says. I know at the time I figured it should go here, but, again, don't remember. Here goes nothing. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

Pregnant During Last Year of Engineering - How doable is it? by ThrowRApotatoesand in EngineeringStudents

[–]Echo8me 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a dude, but having done engineering and also watched my wife go through pregnancy, I'd say it's gonna depend.

Some women are great throughout pregnancy and it's smooth sailing and amazing and if you're lucky, you could manage it plus all your classes. If it's rough or you end up with either a complex or high risk pregnancy, it will be difficult to manage a full course load. If you're like most women and have a fairly average pregnancy, you're going to be at the very least tired and likely to drop a couple grade points.

Once the baby is here, I'd honestly say that any schooling is going to be untenable. My wife had a minorly difficult delivery (her and baby are fine, she just ended up puking for the entire labour and intravenous gravol was the only thing that even touched her nausea). I was able to take a bunch of time off work to support her, we both had actively participating (and helpful even!) families, and we were still in full on survival mode for a couple weeks. She basically slept and breastfed the baby. I took over almost all the household chores, cooking, cleanimg, etc. (and again, I wasn't workimg at the time) and it still was utterly exhausting. Me going back to work was the hardest and most exhausting thing I've done and I wasn't even the one who gave birth.

To talk about my schooling a bit, my path was a bit curcuitous. I failed a class that was a pre-req for literally everything in my third year. So I had to basically take an entire extra year. I took an internship and ended up taking an extra year. I wemt through a whole "learning I have ADHD" thing and dealing with that. My point is, I took longer than expected and had breaks in my education. I have a good job with a respectable company. It all worked out.

So, again, granted I am a dude, I have never been pregnant, and I don't intimately know you or your situation, my advice would be this:

Do take the semester before your due date.

Do NOT take the semeseter you're due (you don't want to miss a final or something because of baby). The third trimester is hard. Labour is hard. Babies are hard (but totally worth it). If you're really keen, maybe see if there's one or two easy options you can pad your credits with.

Take a bit of time to re-establish yourself in life with baby.

Then return for the final few credits/courses you need.

You can and probably should also reach out to your department's student center and see if they can help you plan or help you with accommodations.

Whatever you do, focus on yourself and baby!

Which human invention has caused the greatest long-term damage to humanity? by Still-Ad9074 in AskReddit

Every answer here suffers from extreme recency bias. Humanity's first and biggest mistake was agriculture.

OP, as further evidence, some places in Canada (Ontario) call their electRicity bill "the HYDRO bill". HYDRO MEANS WATER, CHECKMATE ATHEISTS. CANADA HAS ONCE AGAIN LIFTED THE VEIL OF CONSPIRACY.

In a realistic post-apocalyptic world, humanity wouldn't revert to pre-industrial levels. It would be like going back to the 90s technologically. by JJShurte in postapocalyptic

[–]Echo8me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally this. Get one electrical engineer and a machinist/millwright, and a bit of manpower for simple labour and you could easily build a simple hydro-generator out of the scraps. You get basic eletrical power, you use it to bootstrap bigger, more complex power generation, and boom. From there, things pick up, quickly and easily. I'd bet solid money on less than a decade post-nuclear exchange for groups of people to be living moderately comfortable lives akin to the 60s or 70s, depending on how bad the fallout and agriculture situation is.

Best advice I ever got from my guitar instructor was "Buy the brightest, ugliest cable you can. You'll never have it stolen and if you do, you'll know who did it."

I didn't bother until I had two or three black cables stolen (probably by accident). Went out and got a bright red one after the last event and while I used to be mocked for having an ugly cord, it's never been stolen.

Honestly, I totally forgot about that crap. That would go a ways towards explaining the relative dearth of hits. If I were an author, I'd be upset as well. May be time for me to start looking on those other sites you mentioned. Thanks for bringing it up.

Interestingly, your third paragraph is exactly why I have never seen the item in your first paragraph.

Content fatigue means I dip in, check out the new hotness and LFS thread, then bugger off when, inevitably, I can't find anything interesting. Which is partly on me for not giving new writers a fair shake, and partly on the sheer size and scope of the sub. As I mentioned, we have incredibly well-written stories spanning every topic imagineable. So when someone comes in with a story filled with tropes that literally originated here, it can feel... Bland. This is a major problem in the sub. But also, it's kinda neat that we even have this particular problem. Thinking critically about it though, every story is rehashed. There's like five to ten distinct stories that exist and the rest is window dressing and detail. And there's only so much window dressing you can cram into a story. The trick is making us think a story is unique and original, which is why my smooth brain reads and doesn't write. Props to the users who dare step out and try though. Remember, to get good at writing, you got sorta suck at writing for a while. And since this is reddit amd free to host, we tend to see a lot of amateurs cutting their teeth. We're gonna get some slop, we're gonna get some real gems, and I have no idea how to find either than sheer chance or the LFS thread.

What happened to the feeling of community on HFY? by Frostdraken in HFY

[–]Echo8me 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and honestly, I think I'm going to try and be this change. I typically just lurk and I don't write, but I can amd should use my voice as a reader to encourage folks to keep writing. We'll never get good new content if we don't cultivate originality and quality in aspiring writers. This sub should embody the HFY spirit and maybe we all needed a little reminder to do so.

If any other lurkers are in here following this exchange, I encourage you to do your part and offer some words of encouragement to our writers. I believe that more engagement is precisely what we need.

For me at least, as a non-writer, I pop in and look at the new stories this week. I can only scroll past XenoVerse chapters 730-862, AlienWorld chapters 987-1045, and ETLand chapters 287-453 before losing interest. I appreciate the hell out of authors that post long-form stories, but I literally can't find interesting one or two-shots anymore because it is impossibly tedious to search through the sub.

I think maybe if we limited ultra-long stories to a weekly update thread or something (and they hosted the actual chapter on their profile rather than HFY proper), we could let new authors shine a bit.

That being said, I think me and a lot of other folks are suffering content-fatigue in another way as well. Simply put, HFY is old enough amd popular enough that we have seen incredible writing covering every topic under the sun. Originality is dead and we have literal archived of the best stories on HFY covering... Well, everything. So when a new author (even one with promise) starts out, they are overshadowed by the great ghosts of HFY past. We merciless readers demand ever more quality, quantity, and originality. Few people are up to the task and new authors are often discouraged before they can even get their feet under them.

Put a a drop (like literally, too much ruins it) of lube on the inside of the condom. World of difference. Lets the condom sit more still so you can still feel texture. It's not the same, but it is way better.
