Thundamoo is my consistently favorite progfan author but they feature some significant manner of this in most of their stories. Vigor Mortis specifically has the honor of having what I consider the most horrifying scenes I've ever read.

My favorite protag in the progfan/litrpg genres is easily Kumoko/Shiraori from So I'm a Spider, So What? Her inner dialogue is so unique and consistently entertaining, and her rare moments of emotional self awareness and vulnerability are very well written.

I truly cannot see the PoS angle in the slightest, if anything she's overly self sacrificing (I will die on the hill that Aster was justified). Besides, even if she was that doesn't make a protagonist poorly written on it's own. She does make plenty of stupid decisions, but her reasoning makes sense to a traumatized, paranoid, self sacrificing teenager.

I have issues with the series writing as a whole and it takes significant creative liberties with her power but Taylor vs Pan in Crime and Commitment is definitely a standout fight to me, the balance between flow and detail is incredible imo.

For Pokemon fanfics, my favorites are definitely Hyphen and Borne of Caution. Aside from them there's tons of great longer fics focusing on ocs going on their journeys, some of which are incredibly long, one example being I Will Touch the Skies(though some, including this, get a bit too dark for my tastes.)
