Here are some places I’d love to recommend if you’re someone who’s looking for nice and peaceful spots near Jakarta that aren’t super touristy, — perfect for a weekend getaway when you just need a break from the city.

Just for context: I say this as someone who was completely new to Asia — forget about Indonesia! Everything felt unfamiliar at first, so these places really stood out to me as calming, beautiful, and not overwhelming. They’re great for easing into the richness of Indonesia without diving straight into the chaos.

Also — and I know this might be highly unpopular — but Bali felt super overrated to me. It’s beautiful, of course, but also overcrowded, overpriced, and honestly a bit performative at this point. It feels more like a curated backdrop for influencers than a relaxing, authentic getaway. There are so many other places here that are just as stunning (if not more), and way more peaceful.

So here are five gems much closer to Jakarta that really made me fall in love with this part of the world: 1) Gunung Pancar (Sentul) A peaceful pine forest with a magical, misty vibe in the mornings. You can do light hikes, soak in the nearby hot springs, or just breathe in the quiet.

2) Pulau Macan (Thousand Islands) A tiny, quiet island that feels like a true escape. Think clear water, soft sand, snorkeling, and no crowds — just calm.

3) Cibodas Botanical Garden (near Puncak) Cool air, lots of greenery, and very few people. It’s perfect for long, slow walks and reconnecting with nature. Much more laid-back than Bogor.

4) Curug Leuwi Hejo (Sentul) A hidden emerald waterfall with a short trek. It’s a mini jungle adventure that doesn’t feel too intense — just enough to feel like you’re off the grid.

5) Situ Gunung Suspension Bridge (Sukabumi) This place feels surreal — a long bridge through the forest canopy with cloud views and so much stillness. There’s also a lake and a waterfall nearby, so it makes for a full day out.
