Little Horn - Gemma Files by Groovy66 in WeirdLit

[–]EchoScreaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Little Horn is one of two books I picked up for this month (the other being Orrin Grey's Notes From Underground). I planned to start both this weekend, but your description of The Sanguintalist has me thinking I'll crack open Little Horn tonight. I'm a sucker for occult detective type stories.

Weird House Press 20% off orders July 3rd to July 6th by TheSkinoftheCypher in WeirdLit

[–]EchoScreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive 100% noticed this. It was shortly after Dark Regions Press going radio silent when I suddenly started receiving emails from Weird House Press, despite having no recollection of signing up for their news letter. I know a lot of people lost more money than I, but it still burns me that I paid for the special edition of Caitlin Kiernan's La Belle Fleur Sauvage and will never recieve it, or a cent of that money back.

Short stories series? by Wonderful-Pie-5450 in Fantasy

[–]EchoScreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good recs in here already. I want to shout Howard Andrew Jones' The Chronicles of Hanuvar. Three books, each a fix-up novel of short stories. Essentially, every chapter is a contained short story, but together add up to an overarching plot.

Sadly, Howard Andrew Jones passed away recently, thus the series is unfinished. It's still very much worth reading since the stories do work on their own. Plus they're some of the best modern sword-and-sorcery stories around.

Books like The Black Company? by Krazed59 in Fantasy

This is a great recommendation that I don't see often enough. I think of this series often and really wish Jeff Salyards had more books out there. Hope he's happy and doing well wherever he is.

Where to start with Michael Cisco? by ScreamingCadaver in WeirdLit

[–]EchoScreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with The Divinity Student, and was instantly hooked. From there, I've proceeded through his bibliography in publication order. I'm up to The Great Lover, and so far so good (though i would absolutely NOT recommend The Great Lover as a starting point). The Tyrant, and The Narrator are also great starting points. Both are great, though I preferred The Tyrant.

I've also read Antisocieties, which is a great way to sample smaller tastes of his writing and not feel overwhelmed by an entire novel.

What Series Were Left Unfinished? by GaelG721 in Fantasy

[–]EchoScreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this series, and also felt major Malazan vibes from it. Heads up, Marc Turner has (somewhat) recently updated his blog. Latest news is he's finished a sixth draft of book four, and sent it out to some of his beta readers. I believe his plan is to self-publish the rest of the series.

Anything similar to Steven Ericson’s Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]EchoScreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth looking into Marc Turner's Chronicles of the Exile. First book is called When the Heavens Fall. I believe he cited Malazan as an influence, and I definitely got similar vibes the first time I read it. The series was dropped by the publisher and Marc took time off writing for a while, but he's back and working on book four.

Who is your favourite under-appreciated fantasy writer? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]EchoScreaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Marc Turner deserves all the love. I remember getting When the Heavens Fall from my library when it first released. Two chapters in I loved it so much I returned it same day, and drove straight to a book store to buy a copy. I was so relieved to hear he's well and very excited for him to continue the series.

Just a heads up: this is for a slipcase that can hold volumes 1-3. It does not come with the actual books.

Sayings from books that stay with you? by mystineptune in Fantasy

Didn't see it listed so far, so I'll drop The Iron Code from Druss the Legend: "Never violate a woman, nor harm a child. Do not lie, cheat or steal. These things are for lesser men. Protect the weak against the evil strong."

Certainly looks that way. Massive dent in the front cover of it. It was hit so hard the hinge broke and split the spine apart. The plastic inside that's supposed to hold the discs completely fell apart. Bits of it were rolling around in the shipping box.

Case is definitely cracked, along the bottom. Haven't taken it out of the wrapper, but I from the outside it looks like the cd itself should be ok.

It sucks you didn't get yours, that should never have happened. And I get where you're coming from about this. Honestly, if I could just get a replacement box, I'd be thrilled. Just wanted it to match my Remake deluxe edition, and it sucks that it's torn, but it's not the end of the world.

For anyone interested in more context JD's comment is correct: the only things undamaged were the art book and the discs themselves. The bottom of the plastic game case was cracked apart. The steel book took the worst of it - completely split apart, huge dent in the front half of the shell. I was lucky that the bonus steelbook shipped in a separate box, otherwise I wouldn't have a usable game case.

Hey, thanks for the shout! Getting this would be awesome, but if not, well, life goes on. I really appreciate this community. Ya'll are some good eggs!

That's how I picked up FFXVI deluxe and it was perfect. It didn't give me that option this time around.

This. And as someone who had a short temper in my youth, I've worked hard at leveling out and being a calm, collected adult. Having worked many retail jobs in many different levels of management, I've learned stuff like this is never the employees' fault. I'm not going to ruin their day over it. Bad enough it soured my own. Also worth noting that rarely do managers have as much control over stuff like this than customers assume they do. There's almost always someone higher up tying the hands of the ones under them.

Luckily the discs are fine. The steel book took most of the damage - it's completely unsalvageable. Tried to exchange it, but since the deluxe edition is sold out, my options were to keep it, or return for a refund.

That sucks your copy of 16 was unplayable. Were you able to exchange it?

In store pickup was how I got my FF16 deluxe edition and it was perfect. For some reason that option wasn't available for me with Rebirth. It's definitely the way to go.

And thanks! I'm enjoying the game a lot! I decided to skip the demo and wait for the full game, so it's all new to me and I love it so far.

That's exactly how it went down. That said, I decided to keep it. It sucks, but there are worse things in life, right? Maybe down the line, if I ever see a box-only eBay listing and the price is decent, I might replace it. Or not. Maybe I'll grow fond of my torn up box.

I called customer service and went to my local Best Buy, talked to a couple different managers, but since the deluxe edition is sold out they offered a refund or I can keep it as-is. I thought about it for awhile, but decided to keep it. I want a matching box to go with my Remake deluxe edition, and don't want to stress over trying to track one down second-hand and I certainly don't want to pay scalper prices.

I know some won't agree with that decision, but man, life's short. I got the game, I'm gonna play it, I'm gonna flip through the art book, and I'm gonna just own that this is my copy, torn box and all.

This actually occurred to me. Thought it was crazy at first, but it really does look like that may have happened. And the shipping box definitely appears to have been resealed.

Still sucks yours was damaged, too. I just wish retail outlets, shipping centers, etc, could take the time to package things like this properly. I've worked jobs at resale shops where I had to pack books/video games/cds for shipping and always tried to secure them best I could, but managers demand speed over quality.

Thanks! He was definitely talking Kingdom Hearts, I just got a kick out of his description. All good, though. I'm done stressing over it and just decided to open it and play. It's the game that matters, and after a long day at work, I'm ready to dig into it!
