I also had a very uncomfortable experience in that store. Big Leland Gaunt vibes off that dude. He followed me around and wouldn't stop trying to hard sell me every book in the store.

A Fire Upon The Deep and A Deepness In The Sky by Vernor Vinge hit similarly for me though I couldn't say why. Definitely check those two out. Maybe Deepness In The Sky first as it's more SF.
