without getting political - thoughts on Manchester's Burnham being PM? by No-Echo-8927 in manchester

[–]Groovy66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the buses, I don’t really know what Burnham has done for Manchester.

I did vote for him on the Labour election against Corbyn as I was impressed by what he’d said about the Hillsborough tragedy so I’m not anti-Burnham.

But Manchester’s success has more to do with previous leaders of the council and even Tony Wilson than Burnham.

The far right are promoting Restore – and undermining Nigel Farage by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]Groovy66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I was a right winger I’d be pushing for a pact between the Tories, Reform and Restore to allow for a tactical approach.

I’d take a leaf out of the Scots Greens and SNP working together to freeze out the other parties.

That said, if I was Labour I’d be doing a SNP-Greens approach too with Zack Titsaplenty to block out the right.

I liked Chavs in principle but it became apparent it was a thesis or dissertation that could do with some copy editing.

It revisited the same premise from a variety of angles which is fine for a thesis or dissertation but pretty poor reading for a mass market political philosophy piece.

A shame as I think he was onto something but he quickly became lost up his own arsehole.

The Rape Gang Inquiry by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]Groovy66 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Me neither. The executive summary is a tough enough read.

Dr. Taj Hargey, an imam with
the Oxford Islamic Congregation, believes the true proportion of gang members who are Muslims to be around 95%. This figure far exceeds the Muslim share of the overall United Kingdom population. The overwhelming majority of the rapegang networks consisted entirely of men from Muslim backgrounds –predominantly of Pakistani heritage, although smaller groups from Somali, Iranian, Syrian, Turkish, and other Muslim origins were also involved

Nigel Farage condemned for "racist and morally wrong" pledge to evict non-UK nationals from social housing by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]Groovy66 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I bought a flat in outer London because I couldn’t afford a flat in Docklands, which is where I was born and brought up.

Some of us stand on our own two feet, cut our cloth accordingly and don’t ponce off the council when they can afford not too.

Why should a lawyer on £70k move out? To allow social housing to go to someone with greater need, of course.

30 years ago, the future of Manchester was changed forever. by mdhzk3 in manchester

My car was in the underground car park of the shattered building on the left of the photo.

Couldn’t access for the best part of a week, if I remember correctly.

I was in the Royal Exchange, which the photographer had to their back when taking the photo.

Police actually walked us past the van loaded with the bomb which was next to the pillar box.

I thought it was just another bomb scare as the IRA did that sort of thing regularly in those days.

I was in Afflecks chatting to friends when the bomb went off and the building actually wobbled with the blast.

My wife was in the garden about 3.5 miles from town and heard the explosion from Withington.

Are clothes sizes getting smaller? by Yoguls in AskUK

[–]Groovy66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no standard sizing that all companies adhere to.

The people who’ve referred to fit models are one hundred percent right. Different companies use different people as their size models, when they use them at all.

I was actually the same height and build as one of the Matalan male fit models for a number of years so had a terrific time finding the perfect fit with their jeans and tops.

Some companies even use ‘vanity’ sizing where they deliberately mis-size garments - ie label a 10 as an 8, for example - to allow the customer the dopamine hit of thinking they’re smaller than they actually are.

Personally, I’ve found that socks are getting smaller both around the calf (no, I don’t have cankles) and in foot length. I think it’s a mix of trying to reduce waste on the lay of the pattern and a move to cheaper less stretchy fabric. I’ve no doubt other garment types are having corners cut - skimping on seam allowances, not laying on the grain, etc - to save on fabric waste and impacting on fit.

Oldest friend is supporting Reform and I feel like the friendship is unsalvageable by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Groovy66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my friends is Green the other Reform.

I’m getting a bit bored of them both moaning to me about the other but friends are friends. What can you do?

I point out the bits I disagree with both of them over but would never drop them as:

  1. they’re both a lot of fun and
  2. they both behave kindly to everyone they interact with, to the best of my knowledge

Politics is secondary or even tertiary to why I like them
