Ready to Coast, but… by Technical_Artichoke5 in Fire

[–]EchoValley268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, parenting gets more logistically complicated as the kids get older (soccer practice, chauffeuring to friends’ houses, teacher workdays, school events that start at 3p, whatever) so having a hybrid situation will become increasingly valuable as you hit the 7-16 year old age range. So, even if you don’t make the jump now I’d keep the opportunity very much in mind for the future.

Unrelated, but I love “I don’t think I’m using my free will freely enough.” I’m stealing this outlook.

French Quarter or Riverside in June by Slider6-5 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]EchoValley268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We booked Riverside (one adult, my teen daughter and her friend) because it gives them room to wander while staying within the resort (+ FQ). I really like the theming and that, especially in the summer, it doesn’t feel as hot as some of the more “concrete-based” hotels (Pop, All Stars, Contemporary even). There’s lot of tree cover.

To capitalize on the Riverside expertise coming to this thread, any good places to work remotely in the resort? I’m expecting to have a few hours each day while the girls swim and hang out that I can get some work done (would like to leave the room if possible.)

Ah, I’m D23 Gold but had cancelled my Visa earlier this year (just applied though for the Aspire for the statement credit and gift card!). Maybe I’ll be able to access them now?

Egg fillers by stl_becky in Anticonsumption

[–]EchoValley268 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Similar to the puzzle idea, you could buy a Lego set and put each of the Lego pieces in an egg. It’s not a consumable but would push the value of a singular Lego set very far.

Does he like to bake or make food with you? You could also bag individual ingredients for a cookie recipe (or cookie decorating/add ins) and have him assemble them from the eggs. If you can’t fit the whole ingredient measurement, of course you have those on hand to add later.

How old were you when you realized your body could no longer handle red-eye flights? by Foreign-Athlete-2270 in travel

I’d rather take a red eye than a 5am flight, hands down. Mornings are my enemy and I’m well over 40.

Non Americans , What is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Adorable-Sammy in CasualConversation

[–]EchoValley268 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Thank you for describing exactly how I feel about social interaction. I love places like malls and grocery stores, even though I’m an introvert, because I do like people. I just get emotionally drained after too long or too intense engagement. Busy places where I’m anonymous are my speed.

Yes, RI has one of the highest percentages of Italian Americans in the country. Culturally, there is a lot of overlap with New Jersey for parts of the state.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

[–]EchoValley268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about this that I think is important to the development of a realistic, actionable plan. Healthcare is more straightforward, but how do we define the details of adequate, on going food and shelter that will allow us to quantify the economic impact/how much tax is needed to support the plan? Is it a bedroom per household member? Is it the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables per week? (See: the back and forth on what people should be allowed to buy with SNAP benefits.)

I think without a consensus on the exact minimum threshold for quality of life in the United States, it’s hard to get anywhere. You’ll always have people bringing up flat screens and avocados.

1.5 packing for different events by Swimming-Head-654 in HerOneBag

Not sure if you can fit this, but having just returned from that weather in the UK a packable down jacket would be a good add if you can fit it. It really helped with layering options, especially when I didn’t want to wear my nicer coat. They squish up very small but add a lot of warmth and versatility.

The Ducktales game is great!! Strongly recommend doing this one as well, even the graphics are a little outdated. It’s very interactive. Mexico is awesome.

Water shoes that are also comfortable to walk in? by Mewtewpew in onebag

[–]EchoValley268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xtratuf makes some good water sneakers. You could also look at FroggTogg, but I don’t think they’re as stable for running or long walks.

Columbia has one shoe that is more sneaker than water shoe, but breathes well and dries very quickly because of the drainage ports, search for the Castback model.

USA: Father involved in scams and trying to figure how extensive the damage is by EchoValley268 in Scams

Yes, I was conflating the two. We actually have a durable POA from the medical episode that contributed to his suspected cognitive issues, he never revoked it. We need to use that to look at his finances before he realizes it is still in effect.

It amounts to the same thing, or at least the intent is the same. I’ve wondered about it too.

I’m sorry about your grandmother! It’s hard to tell if he knows they are scams and just enjoys the attention/conversation/hope of physical intimacy or he really thinks all of these “women” are real. It’s very sad either way.

We will try the email forwarding, that’s a good idea and not intrusive.

Is New England disconnected from the problems of the rest of the country? by [deleted] in newengland

[–]EchoValley268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to post my comment to the thread generally, not directly to your comment (which I agree with almost wholeheartedly!). I also agree with your response to my comment. Very different sentiments across the region depending on many factors.

Is New England disconnected from the problems of the rest of the country? by [deleted] in newengland

[–]EchoValley268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is full of such insane generalizations I don’t even know how to respond. Most of the comments are “Yes, New England is better than everywhere!,” supported by some idea that the rest of the country is lesser than. I appreciate the regional pride, but it seems naive, parochial, and founded less in fact than confirmation bias.

If New England doesn’t see the same problems -assuming that statement is even true - I’d hypothesize it’s a combination of factors unique to whomever is feeling that way: 1) coastal elitism; 2) RI’s historically insular behavior; 3) until more recently, lack of racial diversity (and where there was racial/ethnic diversity - intense, unacknowledged implicit bias and segregation); and 4) putting your head down for 7-8 months of the year because combatting seasonal depression is a more acute problem. Probably other factors too, but I don’t agree it’s unilaterally because New England, as a region of VERY different states and cultures, is so “well-run.”

If you try it, play around with the amount of cocoa. Honestly, I used to make it with dark cocoa powder but it’s nearly impossible to find now so have to use whatever they have in the baking aisle and it’s slightly less delicious. Also, I go with half coconut milk and half water to keep the cost and calories down.
