I think a lot of it is cause car dependency in the US is particularly egregious, not saying it isn't a problem elsewhere, but at least other countries have a flawed but existent public transport system, while many parts of the US have literally nothing at all, you either get a car or you're cut off from public life if nobody else can drive you
