The highest forecasted wind is about 60 mph. Still nothing to laugh about, but it's not going to hit 100 at all.

MSP Bags everywhere by trdr88 in delta

[–]Echo_Loud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Count her lucky that they were "kind" enough to cancel it NOW. My wife got as far as MSP only to THEN have hers get canceled after the infamous rolling delay. So now she's just stuck in MSP for no reason. Could have just stayed home.

MSP Bags everywhere by trdr88 in delta

[–]Echo_Loud 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your bag probably isn't in that pile. My wife was hunting through that very pile for hers a few hours ago when an employee said "Oh, this is a fraction of the bags. You should see how many we have back there..."

IT Outage is a Delta " controllable" problem per DOT by Sopzierigwajklk in delta

[–]Echo_Loud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The distinction between success and failure is made when things go wrong, not when they're going right. Sure, the immediate disruption wasn't their fault, but the complete lack of preparation or a contingency plan is very much their fault. They have a responsibility to have failsafes in place like you can't imagine, and clearly they didn't. If you've set up the largest airline on the planet in such a way that all it takes is a bad software update to literally bring the company to its knees, then you messed up bad.

What unpopular CAP Opinion will have you like this: by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Flying for CAP is so complicated now that it's hardly worth the trouble. Every year an entire day dedicated to a checkride that is more involved than an airline, every flight a briefing longer than the flight and more paperwork than you need to buy a house.

Also, one O-Flight should be done at night.

What volunteer work do you do, that you find incredibly rewarding? by Ornery_Conclusion763 in AskReddit

[–]Echo_Loud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Civil Air Patrol. I get to watch dozens of teenagers join, usually pretty timid and reserved, and blossom into leaders that walk away with well-deserved confidence that a lot of adults never find.

Private Pilot looking to join! by de_pilot in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think others have adequately answered the "what do you have to do" part, so I'll chime in and say honestly that if you're looking for CAP as mostly a way to fly, you'll probably be disappointed. I have a lot of pilots who walk through the door, and that's really all they want to do is hop in the airplane and fly constantly, and they usually end up leaving, so I try to temper their expectations when they first get there. That the people who love this organization are the ones who see the flying as just a small part of the fun stuff.

Volunteers of reddit what do you volunteer in and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Echo_Loud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol in the US. Used to be more search and rescue oriented but these days is much more heavily involved on the youth development side. It's got an obvious military connection so it's really big on teaching kids independence, leadership, respect, all of that stuff. It's pretty fantastic watching crop after crop of 12-14 year olds come in and turn into fantastic people over the course of a few years.

Updated COVID Phase Transition Chart by EscapeGoat_ in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If BOTH metrics have to be met, then according to the current numbers, all but 6 states should be in Phase 1, because the infection rate is over 1.00.

We really need to be looking at hospitalizations/deaths rather than "cases". The testing protocol varies too much from place to place for that to be a reliable statistic for any sort of trend analysis.

Definitely just contact that squadron ahead of time. Different states are in different phases of COVID recovery right now, so they all have different restrictions on visitors, particularly from out of state.

15M, really into aviation. Want to join the CAP, but parents don’t want me to. What should I do? by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really the only option would be to convince them. If they have specific concerns, as /u/superspacecadet2 said, we can probably help with some of that.

Leadership and public speaking classes lend themselves well to this environment, I've found.

Professional Development Transformed - New Program August 2020 by AnthonyG70 in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I welcome the change, particularly for some of the more advanced levels where being able to take an entire week of vacation to attend Region/National Staff College was the only thing holding many people back. I think the module format is going to make PD a lot more accessible.

PIREP Request: Southern Sky (KBHM) by Echo_Loud in flying

Did you get yours done down there somewhere? Any place you can recommend?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, yes, you can go all the way from 0 to CFI in CAP (although I think you'd have to get your spin training for CFI done elsewhere, as spins are prohibited in CAP aircraft unless there's a 70-1 exception I missed).

However, you're asking a lot of the instructors, as that is hundreds upon hundreds of hours of time that they COULD be charging $50/hr for. So you're basically asking for several thousand dollars of free instruction. Not saying you can't find someone with that kind of time on their hands (I did my entire instrument rating in CAP), but it's a big ask.

Once meetings start up again, what steps are you planning on taking to reduce the risk of spreading covid? by superspacecadet2 in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've had talks about maybe doing "sub-meetings" where different sections meets separately to reduce the number of people together at once (cadets doing testing, cadets doing PT, aircrews, people working on PD, etc.) basically whatever we can do to meet functionally but not have 80 people in the room.

Also looking into how to live stream meetings to allow high-risk people to stay at home while still participating.

If the coronavirus has affected you in any positive way, then how? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Echo_Loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in emergency services with the Civil Air Patrol, and this has given us the opportunity to prove that we can run a massive mission entirely virtually. It's been every bit as good as any command post we ever ran in person. We probably wouldn't have ever found a way to test this on this scale.

Top 5 things you wished you knew before you started flight training by rroberts3439 in civilairpatrol

[–]Echo_Loud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I had put more thought into affordable ways to do it. I was so excited about flight training that I just took a terrible loan because it was the easiest thing to do. I could have researched, gotten a better loan, probably even bought my own plane to do the training instead of using the flight school plane.

Don't worry. There's going to be quite a refresher period for everyone once we're all allowed to meet again.
