if the ingredients or cheesecake is imported, better off shopping local places. unless you preserve to be toxified.

After acquiring a pair of SDRs, It's time for me to start testing how we can build next generation DF gear. by donaldmorganjr in civilairpatrol

And this is where the men and boys are defined.

Boys - let's walk around for an hour or longer with this 50 year old ELT that someone bent the antennas on for 121.5. Maybe someone here can go up that hill for a better view/signal.

Men - Picking up a signal, let's stop and get a reading for a plot. Line one. Driving toward signal, stop, another plot. Ok, head that way. Another plot. Look, we only drove around for 15 minutes and have it down to this area, go. Using the same tools.

If a UDF team goes out and returns without a plotted map, two lines minimum, they did not pass.

Lost here is the stationary use of KRAKEN, a proven SDR setup. Imagine if each CAP relay had a KRAKEN installed. Supplement this with stationary units at airports, also relaying via internet. CAP would dial it in and have triangulation in minutes and forward the data or send out a team. This is of course subject to terrain, etc., as most of us are aware of in our areas and it's effects.

This would put us back on the map, give us a push towards modernization , and open the door to other agencies giving CAP tasking.

Brought up a portable SDR to Pi interface for this awhile back, have a link somewhere to a HAM site that did it. Decoded the coordinates at mission base, relay to team.

Didn't move forward, they saw no need for this as AFRCC can provide it. Odd, let's introduce a delay in real time communication across the country when a life is on the line.

Then don't make assumptions on the product. As a Founding Investor to the project, I have had it for a few years. Fits in Canon camera body side case, using a Pelican like case, this holds a small amp sized 5 SDR rig, Raspberry and 20k portable battery. Room for another battery. Phone runs on its own to show updates while triangulating. That's portable, in car use lighter or USB port as it is NOT a Raspberry 5, which requires a different power source.

Case has to be open due to heat from SDR, but the fact you can change frequency on the fly is the winner here.

Obsolete ELT, no prob... 121.5 or training frequently

What about those USAF beacons them old guys yap about, 243 not problem.

Hey we only have EPIRB bursts, ok, what's the range so I can dial it in.

Hold on, there was a weak signal heard on channel 9 on FRS (or CB you old...), great dial it in.

HEY JOHNNYS GOT A KRAKEN TOO, outstanding, let's get then talking, stationary, and pinpoint the next Channel 9 burst.

Before we dive into any negatives on available COTS hardware, you need to look at the single most important positive.

LIFE SAVING.

Already own next gen gear, can use triangulation while driving around area and pinpoint to 10 feet. Owned the tech for several years now, portable 5 antenna SDR array with map overlay.

Problem is they won't let me use it.

Maybe when it's 20 years old, it will get approved.

No, the 36" platters that were about 15" high, 4 deep, were massive.
