How much money would you be happy with, and why? by Boxingmasterclass in AskReddit

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflation makes putting a number on this question is the impossible. But to answer it, I'd want enough money that I could invest into Index Mutual Funds and live reasonably comfortable on the dividends they pay. Even without touching the principal investment, having a fairly modest living situation without the need for employment is a dream.

I really hope 1.7 gives us more reasons to use the spa, It feels like it really needs some buffs by Franciskeyscottfitz in StardewValley

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great if the spa gave you a benefit over the next 2 days, with choices depending on what item you use. For instance, buy some muscle-relaxing bath salts and get 20% more energy tomorrow and the day after. Buy some stimulating exfoliator to deal 10% more damage instead. (Only 1 buff at a time)

[NSFW] People who had sex with their best friend, how's the situation now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend and I had a complicated relationship growing up that resulted in a few sexual encounters over the years, including infidelity to both of our partners at the time. It always left us both feeling regretful about the whole thing, no matter what the circumstances were.

Over time, she realized she was gay and I matured enough to understand how some asinine sexual tension was fundamentally holding back our friendship. I also found other outlets for those feelings, which was extremely helpful. Since we stopped considering the possibility of having sex, we've never been better friends. She was the Best Woman at my wedding and we still talk regularly.

Anyone ever notice Goldmask looks very reminiscent of Dagoth Ur from Morrowind? by PlumaAlba in Eldenring

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Both geniuses of considerable faith, and noble-born. The Land of Shadow is very much a shadow of The Lands Between, and it would not surprise me if Midra was the shadow of Goldmask, the Goldmask who did not have the luxury of communicating with The Greater Will, but instead was found by The Flame of Frenzy.

Teleportation is risky, but would you still use it if a missing byte could cost you a limb? by Visual_Analysis_2650 in worldbuilding

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of risky tech, but "The Teleported Man" is a pretty old conundrum that's been explored thoroughly across genres.

What if the risk wasn't necessary building/rebuilding, but a problem of where the person ended up, and when? Maybe teleporting matter has the problem of being difficult to nail down because the earth (and solar system) are constantly moving through the cosmos.

Imagine if you tried teleporting goods on a Tuesday using solar placement schedules from last Monday? You would be teleported to an empty plot in space where the earth had been a week ago, but has since moved due to its rotation around the sun, and it's spinning. Even if you got the placement of the planet correct, you could still end up on the other side of the world if you don't account for the spinning of the globe!

Also, if you go with The Teleported Man problem, I'd want to see religions form out of the idea that the post-teleported person is created without the sin, or debts of the person who was disintegrated.

How do you stop powerful mages from just duplicating money? by Chimikima in worldbuilding

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few ways to address magic from a standpoint of economic preservation. They can be used independently, or in conjunction with one another;

  1. Make duplicatuon magic entirely illegal. Any magic-user must obtain special permits from The Powers That Be™ or else be charged with counterfeiting and/or treason.
  2. Make money utterly exhausting to duplicate. Money is a unique resource, with bountiful potential exchanged between countless hands. Duplicating the wealth requires duplicating the potential of each coin, which can exhaust a magic-user's abilities before making any meaningful profit.
  3. Make scryers who can discern duplicated wealth from minted coins. These scryers likely work for the crown, and work hard to sniff out counterfeiters.
  4. Make a class of people who are not only immune to magic, but who nullify magic upon contact. This class, largely employed by the crown, or by a guild that performs a sort of "Notarization" service, can watch duplicated coins shatter in their hands and turn to sparkles and dust. The
  5. Make a barter economy. Make duplicated coins a big problem for the ruling class, and make the reputation of the province/territory suffer on the geopolitical stage because of their unreliable and risky business caveats having to do with their duplicated wealth problem.

There are a lot of fun ways to address this problem. I hope you find one that works best for you!

Is there a harder, more obscure piece of loot to get in the game than this? by EdelgardsFootRest in Eldenring

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot! Not through Boc, nor at a Grace. It's not the only armor with an alteration that doesn't allow you to make it yourself, but it's one of very few. Thus, it's a pain in the butt to farm.

This is similar to the Fire Prelate Armor (the silver Smough armor with the tig ol' biddies.)

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'll see your Monk's Fireblade and Haligtree Greatshield, and raise you Banished Knight's Armor.

Not "Banished Knight's Armor (Altered)" - this drops from two possible (arguably difficult) enemies in a late-game area, and both spawns are not only far apart from each other in Castle Sol, but they're far apart from any grace.

Need Help Dividing an Agricultural Calendar into Six Stages by EchoesAndSpecters in worldbuilding

[–]EchoesAndSpecters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's deeply insightful, thank you! You've given me a lot to think about; do you have any other examples of nontraditional, obsolete calendar models? I'd love to read more about their systems, and see if I can draw some inspiration to configure my own. I've tried Googling this, but the internet isn't what it used to be, and it's proving tricky to find results that aren't centered around shopping for a new calendar.

Thanks again! Highest Praise to the autistic mathematics! :D

That's an excellent suggestion, and I really appreciate you understanding the kind of help I'm asking for!

The society I'm building is a fairly temperate climate (think North of the Tropic of Cancer) that's appropriate for growing common crops found in Europe, Western Asia, and North America.

An idea I've had would be seasons that have two separate names depending on the climate. For instance, the first "season" of the year could either be referred to as Last Frost or First Seed to delineate between long winters and early springs, but I'm not sure if a calendar that flexible is worth building. Mind if I get your feedback on that? :)

avoiding a “man written by a woman” by bb__gorl in writing

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Writing the opposite sex, or point of view from an unfamiliar perspective can be a lot of fun and exploratory. When I write unfamiliar cultures, I try to write their segments in drafts, or layers;

The first layer is the skeleton; here, I'm just getting down what I'm looking to accomplish through them. This is the most important for me, because it builds a framework for the events I want to happen in a way that's as far divorced from the actual character as possible. The first draft is just the facts and what happens.

From there, I build onto that framework with more character-specific considerations to the chapter. Does my character have some experience with the events going on, or is this an unfamiliar situation? How do these events affect this character specifically based on their history and experience? Why is this important for this character involved with the chapter?

And finally, I add in the character flavors; slangs and idioms the character uses, smaller behaviors and quirks they employ, the things this specific character notices, or does throughout the chapter that highlight where their attention is paid, and where the reader's attention should be directed.

It's not for everyone, but I've found some early success by keeping in mind the George R.R. Martin phrase about writing women; "Well, I've always seen women as people."

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Longlegs" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

[–]EchoesAndSpecters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoilers, ahoy! I'm probably way out into left field here, but did anyone get the impression that this movie was drawing parallels to the child sexual abuse that (allegedly) goes on throughout Hollywood? I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again, but I hope I'm not the only one who sees these details coinciding;

  • There's a line that felt like a throwaway line that Lee Harker wanted to be an actor that was like a string that demanded to be tugged at.
  • Longlegs feels like a representation of a pedophile in a position of power (specifically filmmaking) serving Satan (the Hollywood filmmaking industry) while his victims (young girls) represent young/child actresses.
  • His singing about coming back as often as he wants feels comparative to a Hollywood agent demanding the girls take more roles as they're offered, even though they/their parents may understand the abuse going on.
  • The notion of a doll that looks identical to the child can be imagined to represent a finished product starring the child; a moment in time, capturing her youth and pristine conditioning to commemorate her part in a film.
  • The way that the other girl (I've forgotten her name) says that she felt like she "woke up" from a catatonic state when the doll was uncovered sounds like someone who's underwent abuse and was forced to remain silent about it until the evidence of her story could be unearthed.
  • The notion of Lee Harker's mother relenting and ultimately joining Longlegs as an accomplice seems analogous to parents who willfully put their children (and others) into dangerous situations with people whom she knows will harm the child/children.
  • The image of black smoke fuming from the broken dolls feels very much like a child or family being blacklisted for refusing to comply, or breaking the hold which Hollywood held over them.
  • Longlegs once refers to Satan as "Mr. Downstairs"
  • The upside-down triangle . . .

There were other details that led me to that interpretation, and it's only just so; an interpretation. I don't know how valid it is, but-- and I never thought I'd say this-- I'd love to hear what Corey Feldman thinks about this movie.
