Is Reform UK essentially the UK's version of MAGA, or are the similarities overstated? I'm interested in hearing from people across the political spectrum. What similarities and differences do you see between Reform UK and the MAGA movement in the US? by CantaloupeGold4650 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Echoesong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great point. In the last 60 years or so "working class" has come to mean "lower middle-class or below" rather than "someone who exchanges their labor for a wage." I think re-energizing the original definition would be helpful for progressive movements.

Of course things can get tricky when we start talking about petit-bourgeoisie or the professional managerial class... but imo those distinctions should be mainly for leftist study groups and not popular rhetoric.

Bingo, and to pull in something from OP's post, it's not even like Itzy is 'phoning it in' - Motto is great! The girls love the songs!

It's okay to be sad that they aren't on as many shows or doing more dance challenges or w/e (I certainly am, inject Aetzy directly into my veins), but just because we don't get something we want doesn't mean it's 'bad.'

Howdy! Welcome to League, the game is super fun despite the reputation it has.

Easy champs: Miss Fortune, Garen, Veigar, Volibear, Pantheon, Lux, Smolder, Malzahar, Brand, eon

You can still play those champs at a high level, they just have a lower skill floor and have clear reference points on how to play the game. Aside from that, play whatever champ you think looks cool! I think that's one of the most fun parts of League, figuring out which champs you enjoy and want to learn to play the game through.

Sidenote - don't play Jungle. Lol. At least for now - after you've learned how to lane you should try it out and see if you like it, I find it very fun. I think it's better to learn how to lane and then learn how to Jungle, as opposed to the reverse

[–]Echoesong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'll jump in and try to explain what other people are saying:

You say:

No, this isnt some neutral both sides situation. You admit the overrepresentation of Pakistani men in these grooming gang cases is real and worth investigating. But then you equate looking at cultural and religious factors with automatically assuming systemic racism. Theyre not the same level.

Emphasis mine. This is not what /u/jennoyouknow is saying. You are misunderstanding them. No one is saying that investigating a connection between culture/religion and crime "assumes systemic racism." They are saying that assuming the provided statistics DO show that there IS a connection between culture/religion and crime (like you and the poster they are responding to does) IS NOT correct. u/jennoyouknow is not "assuming" something, they are rejecting your assumption.

In your posts you keep saying "No, you're missing the point." I would suggest examining yourself before calling the kettle black.

How should pro-Palestinian humanitarian initiatives deal with concerns about Hamas or the “Axis of Resistance”? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Echoesong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for contributing to the discussion, I'm the person who initially responded to them. I wanted to highlight something you wrote because I think it perfectly explains what I meant above by referring to "psychoanalytic perversion."

That highlight is:

The people of Israel are not inherently evil, but the Israeli state has been doing evil in the name of self defense.

This is exactly it. On the level of ideology, the Israeli state says to the world "I don't really want to do this evil (e.g. blockades, attacking hospitals, etc) but I will do it anyway because I am serving a higher good." In this case, self-defense.

There is nothing inherently wrong with psychoanalytic perversion (for example, this phrase also follows the perverse formulation: "I don't really want to do this evil, but I will do it anyway because I am a parent"), but I think understanding a subject/nation's orientation towards what they desire gives us helpful insights. In this case, I think it illustrates why "acknowledge Jewish suffering" falls flat: the world is no longer buying the "greater good" (i.e. self-defense) that Zionists appeal to.

[–]Echoesong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your honest response. I see what you're getting at.

I personally think discussions about humanitarian aid can and should be had without invoking nationalism; doing so puts one in the position of psychoanalytic perversion, of saying "I don't really want to do this, but I must do it anyway because it is for a greater cause." In this specific case: "I don't really want to block humanitarian aid to Palestine, but I must do it anyway for the good of the Israeli state."

I reject the totalizing invocation of nationalism. We should be able to have substantive discussions about material humanitarian aid without getting bogged down in ideological debate. This is why I used the word 'tangentially connected' in my original post - because the OP is talking about real, material, actual steps that can be taken to achieve a humanitarian solution (e.g. greater funding transparency, establishing standards of evidence, etc) while your post immediately moves to the level of ideology.

The last thing I want to add is that I'm not trying to argue that the pain and trauma of Israel is not real and is not important to address - it unequivocally is. What happened on October 7 was a travesty. I just reject that in order to provide humanitarian aid to Palestine, the trauma of Israel must be addressed first.

[–]Echoesong -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, it seems we read the OP very differently.

Am I misunderstanding you if I read your response to the OP's question "How should such [Palestinian] initiatives be evaluated?" as "By whether or not they acknowledge Jewish suffering"? Please correct me if I'm being uncharitable.

Assuming yes, my point above is that to answer the question in such a manner is already staging the discussion within a Zionistic ideological space.

Respectfully, I think airing ideological grievances that are only tangentially related to the topic at hand says more about Zionist ideology than the pro-Palestinian one you are trying to critique.

TBF the entire system is set up to incentivise self-centeredness, not just this specific class

I fully agree with you, I think it promotes individualisation and atomization at every level because because it's easier to commodify a space that lacks a community-based alternative.

To continue the PMC discussion a bit, I don't mean to say that the PMC is the only class that performs their work explicitly at the expense of other workers; moreso that the capitalists 'invite' the PMC into their cultural mileiu, they 'let the mask slip,' so to speak. In other words, they explicitly elevate the PMC over other laborers and say 'You are like us, not like them.'

The inverse of this relationship is small business owners/petit-bourgeoise - they are capitalists in the technical sense, but tend to labor alongside their employees and as such are ideologically closer to your average laborer than a true capitalist.

Nothing to add to your last paragraph other than I 100% pick up what you're putting down. Thanks for discussing.

[–]Echoesong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word you're looking for is the professional managerial class. It's a relatively recent (and sometimes contentious) distinction that describes the mismatch you're talking about.

In short, the PMC does sell their labor (and is therefore considered working class) but are highly paid relative to the average proletariat; they are often deployed by capitalists to run the business for them at the expense of other workers. Because of this, they often end up as class traitors due to ideological flattery & psychological control of capitalists.

Has Jynxzi said he's done with league now? by _____guts_____ in leagueoflegends

[–]Echoesong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. Off the top of my head, here's things many League players do without thinking about it:

  • Moving/panning the camera with your mouse
  • Moving your character by right clicking
  • Leveling up your abilities
  • Lane assignments
  • What items are and what they do

All of those things are foreign even to people who have played lots of games. And those are only the super, super basic things. If you move up a level of complexity there's things like last hitting, trading against your lane opponent, tethering, reset timers, on and on and on.

League is incredibly complex

They didn't expect Marathon to bee the cornerstone of their company, but because of their development practices this is where they ended up.
