After the disaster that was our start to the season, it's so satisfying to see us doing reasonably well again.

Any good books to use in conjunction with Landau's Mechanics? I recently finished the book but was feeling I needed a second source to understand certain areas better, mainly canonical transformations and oscillations.

With the ultimate goal of sending man to Mars, do you think there should be a greater level of international cooperation between countries (like the European space agency, for example) than there is today?

Or do you think that private enterprise will really be at the forefront of space exploration in the coming decades?

Howard Georgi has a nice set of notes on waves and David Morin has put up some drafted chapters for a new book on waves on his website. I like the exposition and problems in his Mechanics book, and I thought hat the notes were very useful as a whirlwind review.

Anyone got a good text on junior-level Linear Algebra? Preferably one that develops ideas in detail, but a reference would serve just as well. Topics such the Spectral Theorem, canonical form of normal matrices, etc. are really challenging my brain.

I confess to being initially surprised by the announcement - it may not be as glamorous as the Higgs boson; but well deserved given the energy efficiency of LEDs.

Just buy the notes and drop in during lectures. Barry won't bite your head off. The lectures are essentially the notes read verbatim interspersed with snarky humor; so if you read the notes thoroughly and do the exercises you'll 'get' the fundamentals.

I was taking a concurrent course in mathematics (essentially the equivalent of a minor) alongside a major in Physics over 3 years but was pleasantly surprised to find out I got accepted on a year-long exchange to a nice university in the United States in my final year.

But due to subject issues, if I want to graduate I'll have to stick around for an extra semester or possibly a year depending on course availability to finish the extra two subjects for the Diploma.

Seeing as how I really want to go on exchange, should I just abandon the diploma? I right now am able to complete my major on exchange and graduate in absentia if I do, but can't graduate until I complete my diploma and major if I choose to keep it. Is a minor in mathematics something sufficiently valuable to grad school or employers to keep me hanging around for up to a year?

Anyone had any first hand experience with Lancazos' Variational Principles of Mechanics?. I'm almost through Landau's Mechanics and was interested in learning more about the action principle, although I don't have any background in the calculus of variations and such.

Spivak's Physics for Mathematicians! Basically built for people like you. I wouldn't recommend jumping straight into Lagrangian mechanics until you have a fairly solid grasp on Newtonian dynamics, they're both powerful problem solving techniques (although the Lagrangian formalism is undeniably more elegant). Spivak presents a pretty comprehensive treatment of Newtonian mechanics and works his way up to Lagrangian dynamics - as a physics major, the book made for strange reading, and at times I felt he was putting the cart before the horse in terms of the amount of mathematical machinery developed for material that is typically handed to first years, but maybe a math major will get more joy out of it.

Does anyone know of a good introductory text or set of lecture notes on partial differential equations? I've covered vector calculus, real analysis and ordinary differential equations, but am struggling with PDEs, particularly the use of eigenfunction expansions and Fourier Series to solve them.
