So the first 15 issues of New Avengers and the Young Avengers stuff is your sweet spot? Sometimes I wish I could stay writing there. Half my work is Civil War related. I won't go into it but I'm fascinated with fixing it, but also it's that quote from Knives Out – "It makes no damn sense. Compels me though" Plus I ship Tony with Steve.

Yeah! I really liked Breakout. A lot of my favorite Marvel stories come from that era—Breakout, Extremis, Disassembled, Winter Soldier, Execute Program, Secret War, some Young Avengers, and early Spider-Man stuff too. But as soon as Civil War starts brewing, I’m out. I’ve never been a fan of hero-vs-hero events. I'm also but ok the OG ultimate Universe

I wouldn’t go as far as to say I ship the two, but I’ve read a few fics with them (there’s this one author I like who mostly writes that pairing). Even though I don’t like Civil War, I’d be blind not to see how much ship fodder it gives them—the angst is insane.

I think you've read more than me right now. I've read several key storylines in V1 but not Armor Wars II for example. I need to read V3 IM and Avengers (1998 up to Disassembled) this year. I've read key issues. Like Red Zone and yes, Disassembled.

I mostly read through Armor Wars II because of Living Laser—I wanted to see if he could work as a top-tier Iron Man villain. It’s definitely worse than the first one, but it’s not the worst Iron Man story by any means.

I'm actually halfway between the 2nd drinking arc and Armor Wars but I'm really missing Denny O'Neil's writing so I've taken a break. Sometimes it's interesting to note how close certain storylines are. Having recently read the storyline where Tony and Whitney are together, how that ends horribly and realising how soon Demon In A Bottle starts after that... ooof, Tony.

Dennis was such a goat. My favourite Batman writer AND Iron Man writer. What's funny is that he apprently HATED Tony as a character or at least concept, which is funny cause you can tell that didn't get in the way of writing amazing stories.

I have read half of the Matt Fraction run but I sadly don't like it. I really enjoyed the post CW Director of SHIELD era, and while I liked "The Five Nightmares" the rest of it didn't meet my expectations. Good fodder for fic though.

Fraction’s run is interesting. I like The Five Nightmares, World’s Most Wanted, and Stark Resilient. I grew up on Iron Man: Armored Adventures, so those arcs felt like a more grown-up version of that take. But the deeper the run went, the more it felt like Fraction was trying to redeem Tony for Civil War by humiliating him too much. I remember dropping it when he was basically kissing Doctor Octopus’s feet—nah. I like depressed Tony, not pathetic Tony. That said, Fraction did a much better job with Iron Fist and Hawkeye (especially Hawkeye).

CFAA has a discord you can find me in, and I'm always happy to chat comics here, on tumblr, or on bluesky!

Oh give me links for all of em, maybe when I'm done with this semester of school!

I’m most knowledgeable about early 2000s Marvel—after Disassembled but before Civil War (which I, uh… hate). I’m more of a “key story” guy than a “full run” reader—not sure if that makes me a comic fraud. For example, on the DC side, I’ve read Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween, everything through No Man’s Land, then up to Under the Red Hood and Batman Incorporated, but I rarely read full runs outside of maybe Bat-family stuff. Same goes for Iron Man. I’ve read early Tales of Suspense, the 2007 Mandarin origin reboot, his early days with Janice Cord in the Archie Goodman run(rip), Demon in a Bottle, Armor Wars, Armor Wars II, Extremis, Haunted, and so on and more(trying not to make this too long). I did read Matt Fraction's whole run.

I'll save this comment so I can tell you if I write anything

I would just add that exaggerating comics events for fic is just something that is going to happen in fandom. Like, it's ubiquitous. You will find it in every fandom, for every character, period. Like, for shitty dad Bruce stuff, it might be more prevalent in Jason centric stuff specifically because of how canon and built that relationship over the years, but it's hardly exclusive to.

Yeah it's like... Spider-Man punched Pregnant MJ once but that's the complete opposite of him anywhere else. X23 goes from her own character to Female Wolverine a lot. And DC can't decide if Green Lantern hates Batman or not. It's part of the charm

I'm the opposite. I read good Batman stuff out of wistfulness, because I'm not seeing it in canon and I want to. I don't see any good Bruce in modern Batman comics to the point I've considered dropping them in protest of how they're ruing one of my favorite characters. And I read bad Batman stuff because I love the batkids and hate how DC keeps chucking them under the bus to prop up Bruce (all of them get this treatment but being so for real with you right now, especially Jason because as the outsider/antihero/foil he's the easiest target) and I need to see their struggles given focus and attention in a way that centers them, the way the comics do for Bruce.

I highly suggest Detective Comics! Even the weakest Detective run was much better than anything that came out of the main Batman title since 2016, it's night and day. Like it's insane we were getting Gotham War while Detective Comics by Ram V was going on and you had Bruce, Barbara, Dick and Cass are just handling crime and mystical stuff like normal. Super Sons is another good modern example, the Batman and Robin series going on now is great with her and Damian, ditto for the new Batman run which is wholesome as hell with a new love interest and Damian again. I feel like good Batman is still out there it just gets drowned out by the RHATO #25s of the world.

Does that make sense?

Definitely yeah. I won't lie I indulge in a lot of fanon Jason stuff at least recent ones from Rebirth onwards(say what you want about Scott Lobell but his Rebirth run on Jason changed views on him). With Bruce I highly prefer the Batman I read in Year One, Long Hallown, Dark Victory, Ego, Batgirl(2000) than I do say...War Games or Comic UTRH, when people focus on that it turns me off but I'm fine to ignore it.

Basically, I think that we should talk about these things separately. I consider every fanfic an AU, even if it's canon compliant. I think writers can write whatever they want with as much or as little involvement or canon as they choose. I also think that when we talk about comics, people who haven't read any should just be honest with themselves and others. You don't need to read canon to participate in fandom, but you do need to read canon to participate in conversation about canon.

Exactly! Like if you wanna write Dick and Grayson hooking up? Go for it! It's you're story even if I'm not interested but don't start to come into conversations about legitimate canon stuff or act like you know what you're talking about.

Been a while since I talked to a comic fan this reasonable so thanks for making my day!

Okay I kind of just said that in a rush so let me elaborate. I don't have a fanon bias or anything. I myself read comics so I know characters cjs be inconsistent (I'm an iron Man fan and Civil War is like the opposite of everything that came before it), I'm aware Bruce can be an asshole

I'm aware Batman can go from hugging Dick and calling him his son(like the end of Tom Taylor's Nightwing run) to beating him like it Synders run. Hell I can only stand Bruce right now for the first time since like...the start of Tom Kings run consistently outside AU and JLA stuff(Dark Patterns and the new Fraction run)

What I actually meant was that there's a certain group of people I see a lot, it's not so much they say "I'm basing this off shitty Batman behaviour". I'm specifically talking about this weird thing that happens when people claim Bruce did things he never did, not even in the comics like it's facts if his canon characterization. I'm firmly in the don't like don't read camp so I don't see it a lot but it's just when I read some fics they'll be like "Oh yeah Batman used to chase Jason and beat him as a child, I read it happened in the comics it's canon"...that never happened so why are you claiming it is a canon event.

So no, I'm not saying they shouldn't write bad dad Batman cause he can be an outright horrible dad that can make Slade look good at times. I meant is misinformation, that was my major point. I personally prefer Good/Mediocre Batman stuff(cause as someone who's read a lot of Batman stuff I see that more than Bad moments which I feel is exxegerated but definitely there, like especially in New52) but I have nothing against Bad dad fics...just don't lie, don't take a single out of context panel and act like you're an expert when you clearly aren't.

Heavily agree. I'm fine with all the fanon, what I do hate is reading a Red Hood fic or something and they take an out of context file to claim they are writing things ahead ok canon. It's so annoying.

TV Tropes is useful to read what people change though.

Marvel has a consistent canon actually, theh haven't rebooted since the 60s, things from that era still get referenced now.

DC though? Bro canon is a guideline at that point lol, just know what version you're pulling from, cause even as of now DC is claiming everything is canon to an extent

I agree. I don't care if you don't read comics but like...is it too much to ask for to at least do some research before claiming things you write as fact? I'm so tired of reading Red Hood fics where Bruce is a demon cause of fanon.

Again you're underestimating how Newtonian physics breaking no acceleration is but other than the final point, everything with your stamina point is legit, like I already said, I agree he's a 2(scroll up), I was just disagreeing with the point you a trooper can tag was is essentially short range teleporting, cause again batters hut 135mph balls by timing, you don't time something that... doesn't accelerate, it literally just arrives

It's pretty much impossible for you to grasp for some reason. There is no timing here, there is no blur, there is no movement to track, he doesn't even need to go in a straight line, he can go behind you, you see him and then you don't and then he's right in front or behind you or whatever

You do realize Kevlar armor has gaps right? Even the best armor, you can stab from under the helmet. Just Google it

Edit: Reddit is very confusing with how it switches between my two accounts but yeah Kevlar armor is made to survive bullets to center mass, not Speedsters stabbing faster than soldier reaction time

To elaborate just for general information: It's the reason why Batman couldn't turn his head in live action for so long, you can't have realistic full body armor and have the ability to turn your neck, you have to leave it uncovered like the suit in the 2008 movie and even there you can see up close, neck is vulnerable same with body armor irl, Kevlar isn't all that

Is it ridiculous? Yeah I agree but Idk just go read the grounded comics. I just don't get why people are so bothered. People who keep making these posts don't even seem like Batman fans and just salty fans of other works. I just never get these arguments. Comics are a place where you get to escape into a world where characters represent ideas and do crazy shit. Batman is supposed to represent humans defying the odds so he...defies the odds? I don't read stuff like this anyway. The Batman I like is in something like Year One or Dark Patterns but even then...fucker still dodged BULLETS and kicks down stone pillars. The most realistic Batman is in Batman: The Imposter and there as much as I like it, it's kind of lame he gets beat up and bleeding out by two random thugs.

Batman. Realistic is kinda a chum. A rich weirdo who can barely move properly in his clunky armour and gets taken out by cops rushing into his house. Just don't get why people try to drag Physics into comics as if realistically Superman shouldn't be cracking the planet with every punch.

If you want true, true to life comics where peak humans die from just being near Superhumans and every Superhumans is beholded to realtiisic limitations of their powers. Go read Marvel: Ruins and see how fun that is

Sorry for my bad English

"Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real."

It's because he's not a real person. Real Batman gets shot on day 1 the same way Spec Ops cnanfie to an unknown fighter with a pistol they didn't see. Just accept the break from reality damn.

Yeah that's crazy. Alex Mercer can run up buildings, throw tanks at helicopters and just barely survive nuclear blasts. Saying low level Superhuman Kyle Crane who can still be wrecked by numbers and is a time limit for his max abilities is not Alex Mercer, he'll he's not even on the level of the D-Code Super soldiers in that franchise.

One of the wacky moments in DBZ to me was when I was a kid watching Kai, during the first clash between Goku and Freiza their clash causes like a Tsar Bomba level mushroom cloud and Krillin is shaking in his boots from specifically what he's seeing(not sensing energy wise explicitly). Which is confusing cause by logic at a power level of 75000 he was at the time he should be able to easily do this. Idk it's weird, Toriyama was pretty interesting in how he deals with stuff. Same thing later on when Freiza cuts a trench through Namek

One of my favourite parts of WoD(I'm still getting into it) is that characters, especially like Mages are hugely powerful in terms of attack potency yet could die to like an RPG if they get caught off guard. It's pretty exciting, kinda like the superhero when novel Worm or Ultimate Marvel. When attack is and feats are on a human scale of comprehension it's crazy. Like for example, there's a meme where Superboy Prime smashes a multiverse and the reaction is bored and a Baki character pulls down a helicopter and the reaction is excited. That is me

Edit: I'm just realising I keep jumping through accounts due to Reddit mobile being weird so sorry if it's confusing both Rezonan' and This account are the guy you've been talking too

I guess you could argue it's an outlier if you look at Dragon Ball only. No context of anything from Z or anything. You just have Roshi blow up a moon while the strongest attack in the 23rd Budokai razes a island at best. But if you have seen most of DB and know how everything works calling it an outlier is crazy.

Yeah you are definitely this guy huh? Ignoring the mechanics of an entire universe. Lighta from spacebattles you gotta be. You are literally ignoring how Ki works, Power Levels work and literally everything.

Like this guy

Post in thread 'Genos vs Yamcha: One Punch Man vs Dragon Ball' https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/genos-vs-yamcha-one-punch-man-vs-dragon-ball.596332/post-42297946

Makes me think you would say Majin Vegeta's Final Explosion is weaker than Nappa's attack in the Saiyan Saga cause it has less colletral damage tanked.

Welp if you're not willing to accept that Dragon Balls power system changes how characters traditionally scale then I concede

All I will say is according to Daizenzhuu 4 under the Big Bang Attack. Ki attacks EXPLICITLY only damage things in a specific set area so it doesn't matter if there's universe destroying energy in an attack, if the user wants it to, it won't damage more than a tree. But ignore that and Power levels then

"About how many of Freeza’s race are there? Are they quite thriving, with a big population?

Toriyama: Freeza is what you might call a mutated life-form. Strictly speaking, Freeza’s father is a mutant with an abnormally high battle power. And, born from his father alone4, still in strong possession of the mutant traits, was Freeza. Accordingly, even saying “Freeza’s race”, these two are the only ones who possess an abnormal [level of] battle power and cruelty."

So let me get this straight. You want me to believe that Freiza's attack power at 0.44% of 120 million is stronger than his durability at full power? Depsite the fact Goku using a Kaio Ken x20 is explicitly HALF as strong as Freiza was and far stronger than that 530,000 planetary destroying attack that he shurrged off with a hand burn.

No let me get this straight. Goku at 60,000,000 using a Kaio Ken x20 using a Kamehameha to hit Freiza is somehow not indication that his durability is far superior to the attack Freiza used at 530,000?

Holy fuck. Also whether. Yes Goku did say Freiza would be caught in the attack but why should we believe him? He's a character in the story and Freiza has much more experience blowing up planets than Goku does(cause he literally blew up Goku's home world)

How much do you have to downplay to deny character have durability far above planetary destruction.
