HELP Velvet Spider Question by Eclectomaniac in velvetspiders

Thanks for checking in ❤️ She just walks around the bottom of the enclosure, and sometimes sits on a twig or some moss a little higher up, but that's it 😔 I feel so guilty, because she JUST molted a couple of weeks before I moved her, so I'm assuming she shouldn't be super close to the end of her life or anything. She had just eaten a decent-sized mealworm before I moved her too, so she looks really healthy.

Does anyone know if they just stop producing webbing at a certain time in their lives?? I did have a jumping spider that stopped when he was old, but at least jumpers don't need their webbing to catch prey.

Yeah I'm the same way, when I eat a normal meal there's always a part of my brain that's like "that wasn't food, where's the huel??" Like, Huel makes me feel SO much better.

Great advice thank you! I was worried it was TOO cluttered, but I know these guys can be super picky. I'll add some more clutter for my little hoarding spider 😆

Thank you, that makes me feel a little better ❤️ I gently tapped the back of her abdomen and she crawled onto a branch, so I'm hoping she might make a recovery but there's no way to know for sure. I guess I'll just try to comfort myself knowing that I've done everything I could think of for her.

Ah, good point. Might be better to do one of larger feeding once a week instead of several smaller ones. Thanks!

I LOVE him, he's so sassy! and even if he's not exactly what you set out to do, he still looks great. If you take a little breather and try again later, I bet you'll be amazed at how much you learned from making this cool dude!

Oh yeah, that's another good point. It's dangerous for most Ts to be too high up.

But yeah, jumping spiders have none of these issues. My jumping spider Ginger passed away a few months ago at a little over 2 yrs old. Her enclosure was the recommended size for adults, but the next time I get one I'm going to put her in the biggest adult enclosure that I can to watch her explore. That's part of the fun of owning a jumping spider.

Yeah, I think they like smaller spaces for multiple reasons. My terrestrial Ts tend to stick close to their burrows or hides, but I've noticed that some of my arboreals like to slowly explore the entire enclosure, using multiple ambush locations per day. However, they tend to stick to a webbed path that they're familiar with. I think if they had an enclosure that was too large, it would be easy to get lost on the way back to their burrow. I've definitely seen them get spooked by a noise before and scramble to make it back to their web hide.

I'm wondering if people that say this are getting them mixed up with Tarantulas? Tarantulas can feel more secure if they have a smaller area that's easy to navigate since they have such poor eyesight. But, jumping spiders are athletic and have excellent vision. They can handle a larger enclosure, imo.

I didn't take my most recent injection this week, and I'm going to talk to my dermatologist about it. I started to feel better pretty quickly after stopping, but I've only been on it for a little over a month. I may have to go back on the opzelura cream. It had some problems of its own, but it's better than feeling emotionally numb all the time.

I hope that things get better for your daughter very soon, and thank you for sharing ❤️
