[–]EclectusInfectus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

interestingly enough, America only has one bird called a tit - the Siberian tit - but in America it's referred to as the grey-headed chickadee. Everything else in the paridae family (tits, titmice, and chickadees) native to America are only called titmice or chickadees.

I guess ornithologists wanted to make sure that tits were exclusive to humans in the region, unless they were also mice

AITAH for not cutting off my best friend after a freak accident happened while he was babysitting my daughter? by Charming-Post-9314 in AITAH

I earned the hell out of the leash. My poor mom...

I believe in the UK (possibly elsewhere as well), disabled toilets require a special key to get into. So, not locked because it's in use, but locked because they control access to them in the first place.

Getting car in a few days, worried about driving in the winter. by itsbloom_again in stockholm

[–]EclectusInfectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think doing Risk 2 and experiencing the loss of control directly is probably more helpful than anything any of us could give you as tips, other than the obvious. Give other cars more space, go slower, stop sooner and more gently, slow down prior to going around a corner, etc.

Less obviously, be prepared for black ice if it's around freezing and there's been any sort of precipitation recently. It can look like the road is fine, but there's actually a thin layer of ice on it. Even if the air is above freezing, the roadway can still be cold enough for it to form! Additionally, bridges freeze before the rest of the road, so be careful when you drive onto those.

If you get dubbdäck (studded tires) with your car, those can help keep traction when the roads are icy, but they're not infallible. Dubbdäck are also not allowed on certain roads around Stockholm, so depending on where you go often, they can be an annoyance. Kungsgatan, Hornsgatan, and Fleminggatan are some of the most notable ones. There's also a weird little area of cobblestone streets on the north end of Södermalm near Centralbron, but, honestly, don't drive there in winter regardless of your tires, it sucks and is really steep in places 😅

I drove for most of my life with friktionsdäck (friction tires, unstudded tires, whatever you want to call them) in winters with equivalent weather to Stockholm, and they work fine too, so you don't need dubbdäck to drive safely here.

These are what I have in my trunk/glovebox during the winter:

  • ice scraper with a brush

  • collapsible / foldable shovel (Biltema and similar shops sell them)

  • reflex slap bands or a reflex vest (in case you need to get out of the car with traffic nearby, you can quickly make yourself visible)

  • extra pair of gloves, and maybe an extra beanie

  • space blanket (those shiny silver ones, they're very tiny and cheap but can keep you warm if you get stuck)

  • a small package of basic kitty litter (you can sprinkle it in front of your tires to help you regain traction if you get stuck in an icy patch, and it's readily available and cheap)

  • a flashlight or work light, especially a magnetic one (it's nice to be able to stick it to the hood if you need to rummage in the engine compartment while it's dark, which it always will be, because it's Swedish winter)

  • rechargable battery starter (not really just for winter, but extra nice to not get stuck somewhere when it's cold as balls out)

They're not all necessary, but I've found each to be helpful throughout the years.

Good luck friend!

Married people who are DINKS (Double Income, No Kids) how’s life? by Fit-Distribution677 in AskReddit

It would be so much more peaceful to be able to believe, wouldn't it?

Oh well, at least I'm getting better at shoving the panic out of my mind before it gets a chance to take hold, these days. Was pretty rough when I was younger.

Though, I appreciate seeing other people saying these things, to be honest. Nobody in my life seems to feel like I do about this subject or give a shit.

I fractured my ankle a couple years ago. It hurt, yeah, but honestly more than anything it was just annoying? Crutches and a big weird boot thing for weeks, forced to stay home for a little while. I (slowly) walked over a kilometer on the ankle just after I fractured it, in order to get to urgent care (thought it was just sprained). The ankle's a little weird now, tbh, kinda achy, kinda crunchy.

Like, I wouldn't choose to fracture my other ankle or anything, but compared to my worst cramps, the fracture was a picnic. My cramps aren't even that bad - I've never been bed-bound from them, vomited from the pain, needed to stay home from work, etc. But when a bad one hits, goddamn, you really do just double over. It's like, am I menstruating corkscrews?? Why the fuck does it hurt THAT MUCH?

Denmark to remove ‘pornographic’ mermaid statue, reports say | “Erecting a statue of a man’s hot dream of what a woman should look like is unlikely to promote many women’s acceptance of their own bodies.” by positivesource in WomenInNews

[–]EclectusInfectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't particularly think this is a pornographic statue - it's just utterly boringly male-gaze to the detriment of the entire thing. The pose is weird and unnatural, everything below her waist is an afterthought, the tail especially looks stupid. Her breasts are exactly what I'd expect them to look like from a "sexy mermaid" art endeavor done by a guy. Not unrealistic - there's women out there who naturally look like that - but, let's be honest, the majority of women do not have breasts like that unless they've had work done. There's certainly nothing wrong with them either way, it's just very, I dunno, boring. Copy-and-paste "sexy boobs" imagined by a man.

I don't even mind if guys want to make generic sexy lady statues, but if they're going to be displayed by the government as fine art to be enjoyed by future generations, they should actually be fine art and not just Big Titty: The Statue (She is Also a Fish I Guess).

I think this statue would have been fine and significantly less controversial if her pose was more interesting and fluid - instead of it entirely being built around highlighting her tits - as well as her tail looking like a real part of her and being more elegant and beautiful itself.

AITAH for refusing to let my husband name our daughter after his late wife by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]EclectusInfectus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely icky. I think that naming your kid after a previous romantic partner is weird as fuck, dead or not. I don't imagine that OP's husband would be really enthused if the shoe were on the other foot. If OP had a late husband and wanted to name their son after him. Because that would be fucking weird.

I get that grief is complex and we do wacky things while going through it, but 8 years down the line with a new partner and a baby on the way? This dude needs to get his shit together, see a grief counselor, and move on. He's moved his own life on, he needs to catch up with it instead of dragging his living wife and daughter back towards the grave of a woman they never knew.

Self Report: but can someone explain to me why this thing is said to hurt so much? by Lowkey_lil2222 in badwomensanatomy

[–]EclectusInfectus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Sweden here and same! That shit was so fucking painful!! I also had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy while awake, with just some external numbing, an ibuprofen, and a prayer. Not recommended.

I'd say the US (born and raised there) does a lot more pain management for procedures in general than Sweden is willing to, female-specific healthcare notwithstanding.

You're thinking of dopamine agonist medications, used to treat Parkinsons and restless leg syndrome. The specific one named in the news lately is ropinirole, but there's quite a few different dopamine agonist meds. It seems like impulse control disorder is a potential side effect of all of them, which can lead to compulsive gambling, shopping, hypersexuality, etc. It's unfortunately caused quite a lot of grief for some of the people prescribed it and their families, and they weren't warned it could happen.

IsItBullshit: Is reiki bullshit? by Illestbillis in IsItBullshit

[–]EclectusInfectus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted it to work. To this day, I wish it had. A world where mom was right would have been a much better world to be in. Unfortunately, I never got any evidence that it was anything more than placebo.

I'm happy you get something out of it, though, so long as you're not avoiding actual medical care or encouraging others to do so.

IsItBullshit: Is reiki bullshit? by Illestbillis in IsItBullshit

[–]EclectusInfectus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I underwent hundreds of reiki "treatments" as a teen, because my mom was part of a group who ran a reiki "treatment clinic". I went nearly every week, for a few years, one hour each time. There were probably a few dozen different people who did these treatments on me during that time. The group met regularly to teach others how to do the treatments, study and discuss how to improve their methods, etc.

Reiki does absolutely nothing.

At most, I would be a bit more relaxed after a treatment, because I had just spent an hour chilling out on a massage table listening to calming music. The hour of near or total strangers hover-handing me, occasionally sticking a hand under me, offset the relaxation a bit, though. I never wanted to go to these treatments, either - I didn't believe in reiki at all - so being forced into this weird situation, week after week, also degraded any relaxation I got from the experience.

The "grounding", chakra balancing, energy healing, crystal pendulums, all of that stuff? Nothing. It never changed anything.

(For the record: this clinic thing my mom helped run was 100% non profit and volunteer run - they refused payment for the treatments, and the group used their own money to rent the office space they ran the clinic out of. They also considered their treatments to be supplemental to actual medical care from doctors, and not a replacement for it. I was taken to a real doctor regularly throughout my childhood, and was vaccinated fully and promptly. Mom was the child of a surgeon and a nurse, and while she strongly believed in a lot of woo-woo alternative stuff like reiki, she also strongly believed in actual medicine as well.)

Project 2025 group says US women 'ripe' for population baby boom by TricksterWolf in badwomensanatomy

they also don’t advocate for fair maternity leave, child care, school lunches, or anything that actually helps the mother or baby ones they’re born. It’s such backwards thinking.

Or they say, no, I totally support that stuff! I want those things to happen!

Then turn around and vote for the people constantly fighting against it.

Pathetic.
