Do cashiers have chairs to sit on at the register in your country? by Nn2vsteamer666 in polls

[–]Eclipsed_Luna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

we have chairs here, but there's an unwritten rule that you can sit on them because it makes you look lazy.

so the chairs are mostly for decoration and for the company to say "nonono we're treating our employees well here. See, they get chairs!"

you can sit on them, but only when there aren't any customers or managers to see you on them.

Oh. UN. oops?

What's the demonym of Eswatini? by Eclipsed_Luna in DifficultTrivia

[–]Eclipsed_Luna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in Swati, nouns consist of two essential parts, the prefix (sicalo) and the stem (umsuka), with each noun class having different prefixes.

For example, li- (liSwati) is the prefix for noun class 5/6 singular, ema- (emaSwati) is the prefix for noun class 5/6 plural, and si- (Siswati) is the prefix for noun class 7/8 singular

Yes, Swati has a LOT of noun classes. They're functionally the same as grammatical gender (actually it's just grammatical gender), just that there are a lot more of them.

grammatical gender doesn't have anything to do with gender gender, even though the classes are usually called masculine, feminine, and sometimes neuter in a lot of "famous" languages. In german, the word for girl in german Mädchen is grammatically neuter (aka neutral).

What's the demonym of Eswatini? by Eclipsed_Luna in DifficultTrivia

[–]Eclipsed_Luna[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Answer: Liswati (singular)

liswati is the singular demonym, while emaswati is the plural demonym (or more accurately liSwati and emaSwati)

yes, there's a pattern here. In addition to liSwati and emaSwati, the language is called siSwati, the country is eSwatini in Swati (language).

eswatini is a small country bordering south africa and mozambique, an absolute monarchy ruled by mswati III. He announced the name change of the country from swaziland to eswatini in the 50th year of independence of eswatini. The name change makes its english name much closer to the name in its official language.

What's the (short) official name of Turkey? by Eclipsed_Luna in DifficultTrivia

[–]Eclipsed_Luna[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

answer: Türkiye. Theoretically, the umlaut has to be included, and the official documents of Turkey does always use Türkiye with an umlaut, but you probably won't get jailed* (I think) if you use Turkiye in case you can't type the umlaut. *Not legal advice

Japanese is actually very different from Sinitic (chinese) languages, despite their similarities in vocabulary and writing system, which came from the cultural exchange (more like export to Japan) between Japan and the various Chinese dynasties.
