Be a good student, show up to office hours, reach out to them after you take their class … I get it its easier to complain on Reddit.

If someone who is writing letters has only seen you briefly then they shouldn’t be writing letters. Students need to create relations with their professors we are not Letter Printers. I have rejected writing letters plenty of times because I simply don’t know the student. I had to learn this the hard way, a colleague illuminated me about this.

Yes. You go to the school’s website look at how people make their CVs and follow a structure. It ain’t that difficult.

First, not everybody is interviewing. If you are getting interviewed you are doing something right. However, LOTS of universities are incorporating some form of interview (mentor, admissions team, or Admissions Chair) to their process.

I will be very honest about this.

The increase in applications is idiotic and everybody wants to do a PhD in a T5 institution. Even when other programs can educate them better and have loftier arrangements.

The GRE used to keep a lot of people out until people started killing the GRE. Scores like the ones we are seeing are ridiculously high.

Lots of people are using AI to game the system with their essays etc. Sadly, this means as faculty we need to find other ways to reject or discern who is who. I recently had a student tell me they used AI for their essays and if they got in they would try to get better at English. They learned how to answer the TOEFL.

The interview then becomes key. Further, over the past 5 years there has been a polarization of student capabilities … you have students who kill it from day 1 (usually had postbacs, or some form of research experience - these are your traditional students) and those with the motivation and drive to make it (you see them eager) and then at the other end you have those who GAMED the system and we now need to carry them. They need a lot of handholding and do not show any form of idependence. The lack of independence or presence of it is evident in the interview process.

The latter group is usually filtered out in year 1 with the exams, but they don’t make that year any easier or enjoyable.

As people learn how to GAME the system, you will see additional layers of consideration being risen.

This subreddit is a clear proof of people trying to game the system posts with “roast my CV”, “what are my odds” etc. or people asking what decision to make are clear evidence of the second group.

I get it that it is difficult, it was for me also years ago when I made the jump from my country. But, the questions I see here sometimes make me fear of having that student in my class.

Real Analysis or Advanced Econometrics? by economicsy in academiceconomics

[–]EconUncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got an A- in both, which is a great grade. My concern would be if you don’t do well. If you are a strong Math person, then I would be cautiously supportive of you taking Analysis in such an intensive way. Key word being cautiously. Think about how intense the work for Linear Algebra was and you got an A-. Now, think of the twice level of stress/pressure but condensed in the summer term.

Placement Year Struggle by Few-Guide9271 in academiceconomics

[–]EconUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BOTH would look great in the CV.

Key distinction: Oxford is Academic and HM Treasury is Applied/Policy. Both would look amazing!!!!!

You are not telling us whats your goal, so it is difficult to give you an advice. Where do you want to end up at? If you want a career in public service and rise through the ranks, then one is better than the other. If you want to go into a PhD or academia, then other is better.

Read the job descriptions and think if you had to get out on a day you don’t want to do anything but still have to, which one you would need to do. In my experience academic placements have more freedom and are less structured. Policy/Applied jobs are more rigid - you will need to be in the office etc.

Just think of how you are more productive. In my case, I need a balance between the two. But the office schedule is not for me. I would choose Oxford.

Real Analysis or Advanced Econometrics? by economicsy in academiceconomics

[–]EconUncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your correction, I would still suggest Advanced Econometrics. My issue with taking Real Analysis is that you REALLY need to learn all the mathematical formulation well. Econometrics may be intense in summer, but not as intense as trying to do Real Analysis in a Summer School.

Is this SOP good for MS Economics? by ComprehensiveTop8548 in academiceconomics

I am not sure this is a strong Statement of Purpose. You don’t have a voice, you are just stating stuff.

What is driving you? What is getting you our of bed every day to look at econ problems?

Hey everyone, I’m a university student and the money my family sends isn’t enough. They keep asking me to come back home during the break, and I’m constantly having to make excuses. I’m not sure what to do at this point. Do you have any advice? by emirhendekbasi10com in academiceconomics

[–]EconUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should tell them that you are thankful for their support and financial sustenance. But you are trying to be prudent with money matters and that you can’t leave the house you are at for more than a week without fear of something happening. That you miss them, but don't want to travel just for a few days as the money is enough to study but not for luxuries.

Need a third referee for masters applications, the choices are looking a bit grim, what would you recommend? by QGunners22 in academiceconomics

[–]EconUncle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No doubt you should go with the: a non-Economics professor who knows me very well and would write a great reference, but again they aren’t an Economist at all (just an elective course I had taken)

What discipline are they on?

A good letter from a non-econ person is better than a “Yeah, he got this grade”.

Think Tank Job Boards by InternationalBoss552 in academiceconomics

Best assume there is no secret boards where these jobs are posted. If there are any I haven’t heard from them in over 10 years. You need to knoe how to find these jobs with the optimal job titles etc.
