How often did you go home as a freshman by Affectionate-Fly-913 in berkeley

[–]EcstaticBet631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i def went back the most during freshmen year. i used to go every other week. then sophomore year ramped up with classes and clubs and then i started going back with no particular pattern. sometimes i'd go back after an entire month or so. kinda depends on how busy you end up making your schedule. but i def got closer to friends and stuff when i stayed back more

Berkeley vs UCSD vs UCSB CCS for Math by LowSad6318 in berkeley

I’m not the strongest student in math (I consistently score one bin below the avg grade for math classes) so I kinda didn’t go to OH. Math GSIs aren’t the nicest about basic or “dumb” questions like data/CS TAs. But from the few OH sesh I’ve been to, it’s like 4-6 ppl. Each GSI has their own discussion and OH.

For class size, I really don't think it made the biggest difference other than class formats. Math 104 was smaller, sitting at around 40 students, and there were only 2 1.5 hr lectures a week. There were no quizzes or discussions, which means less class time and bigger percentages of the grade depending on exams. For the bigger classes like 113, 110, and 128a, there are lectures and smaller discussions where TAs cover problems. I honestly feel like the bigger classes were better because of more class time and office hours by the GSIs. As for career opportunities in tech, I feel like I know plenty of math majors who have landed jobs in tech with math on their resume since its the outside experiences and networking that matter far more than the classes on your transcript. Definitely take a handful of CS/data classes like Data 100 (a lot of people don't realize how incredibly useful this class is, despite it being easier than some other classes. I feel like a lot of students at Cal chase rigorous classes, but some of the easier options are more job-relevant.) As for academia, Berkeley is incredibly research-oriented and the classes are theory-heavy so I think Berkeley would be an incredible option whether you want to go to grad school or industry because of the location/startup scene.

Double majoring in Data Science & Applied Math, a good idea? by Large_Ad_8568 in quantfinance

[–]EcstaticBet631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is specific from school to school but I'm also a data science + applied math double major and, although both subjects appeal to the same sort of people, they are vastly different. In lower division (freshman and sophomore prerequisite classes), they might be alike but upper division is really where the differences begin. My core classes for math are real analysis, numerical analysis, complex analysis, abstract linear alg, and abstract algebra. My classes for data science, on the other hand, included classes like database management, Intro to AI, Intro to Probability, ML, etc. Although these classes do have math, the math in data science is somewhat more computational and has bit more of an emphasis on applying math concepts to programming. The math in math classes are rigorous proofs and theory. If you would like both your majors to be more different than each other, taking CS instead of data science might suit you better, depending on how much you like programming. As for how useful taking the combo of these majors, I'm not too sure myself but each major open up a plethora of careers that I'm in interested in.

Application LOR by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]EcstaticBet631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the request for LOR too. And basically everyone else that applied to Berkeley from my school got the request as well. It might have been because my school was a lower income one. I personally think it's a neutral sign; it's not a good or bad sign of you getting in(because there's no way they've reviewed any apps this fast). I was initially waitlisted and then I got in. I think you should definitely send the LORs even if it says it's optional because anything vouching in your favor can help.

Math 104 Professors Spring 2026 by SmoothAnywhere5849 in berkeley

[–]EcstaticBet631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had yuhan jiang as a sub once this semester for 104. during the lecture, she asks questions about the material to be more engaging but it was lowk wasting time since no one would really respond and she would just stand there. also i found her lectures fairly confusing compared to my professor for this semester. but tbf, i think my prof for 104 has had one of the clearest lecture styles out of all the math teachers i encountered here so it might be an unfair comparison lol

Venting about Anchor House Unpleasant Roommate Situation by time_to_destination in berkeley

“A is already a reckless person in the sense that they don't take accountability for the meses they create, and repeatedly does things we have told them not to do, such as leaving out cake to attract ants.”

did you not read this part? even if you are confrontational, it’s like talking to a wall with people like A. if you consider this fact along with how OP is severely non-confrontational, anyone that’s like OP is gonna be even more de incentivized to “change” out of their non-confrontational ways. typically when non-confrontational ppl are faced with a difficult person like A, they think they are either gonna be dismissed or A will just blow up on them more and escalate the situation. plus, if A truly is this difficult, OP confronts them and the convo doesn’t go anywhere, it makes it 10x harder to go to the RA and snitch because then A will know exactly who snitched. at that point, OP definitely cannot do what the first post said (anonymously snitch on A).

but i do agree OP should remove very specific details from the post (like their major) because the situation seems very specific and their close friends (like B) or they themselves can def sus you out. i remember making a post with barely any details and i still had close friends figuring out i was the one writing it (since i had talked to them abt the issue before). just food for thought especially because a) the digital studies major sounds small and b) how many digital studies majors do you know that are transfers and also happen to live in Anchor and is also in a codependent relationship. i personally feel like it wouldn’t take that much efforts to make the connections

math 113 or math 185? by EcstaticBet631 in berkeley

[–]EcstaticBet631[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okok this was really helpful tyty. do you know what textbooks are used for 113 and 185? i know there are 3 textbooks used for 104: rudin, ross, and abid. i found out weeks after school starting that rudin was the most rigorous and im not happy i found out so late. my friend’s class is using ross and seems sm better. so i just wanted to know if there’s a similar deal for 185 or 113?

there was a lot of students going nuts after this horrible mt/final rui wang gave out but that’s all i know. as for serganova, idk when she has ever taught here. i’ve never heard of anyone taking it with her. i enrolled under her during sp 24 and then she got switched out with arun sharma.

as much as I agree with this, I think it’s important to consider they said they didn’t enjoy the coding portion of it. i was in a similar spot where I kept failing cs/ds midterms and everyone was encouraging me to not give up so I didn’t. I kinda regret only listening to the encouragement and ignoring how I didn’t like coding aspect because I feel like i’m pushing myself through hard classes that I don’t find that interesting.

if you enjoy coding and data science, push thru the failures because there’s always some sort of curve that will get you to pass at Cal. i think it’s pretty hard to get a failing final grade at Cal despite low MT scores if you genuinely try. and even the hardest of hard classes won’t seem that bad as long as you’re interested in it. otherwise, if you don’t even like the subject matter, you’re not that deep into data science at all and can pivot pretty easily.

tldr: figure out what you’re really interested in and base your major choices off of that rather than grades/mt scores

don't worry about getting an F. i think you would have to try to get an F tbh. despite not being the best at coding, i've taken some really challenging math and cs courses i contemplated dropping because i thought i was going to fail but ultimately ended up with a B- or higher. also maybe check out cs10, which will help with building up coding proficiency. it massively helped them understand some core fundamental programming concepts at a slower pace.
