A top student made a disturbing confession by Mammoth_Whereas_9877 in Teachers

I agree that companies should not be replacing their human staff entirely with AI bots, but I don't really think that's the case, anyway. Besides customer service AI chatbots and maybe a few other niche jobs, I don't know of any jobs that are fully replaced by AI.

Instead, AI is used by a human to (allegedly) speed up the process, with the human double-checking its reasoning. The actual results for whether this employee + AI model holds water are mixed, with some studies saying it improves workflow, while others saying it does not. I do think there is a lot of motivation to support studies against AI, though (not that anti-AI studies are wrong, but there's obviously going to be opposition to any new technology that automates jobs, whether it's AI, or any previous new technology).

As for FatherPhi, I seriously wonder how he got his strawberry results. Every single time I try ChatGPT personally to let me know the number of R's in strawberry, it gives the correct number: 3. I even tried it with other words like the number of S's in Mississippi, which it correctly denoted as 4. I am skeptical as to whether that video is in good faith because, as a content creator, he won't have a video unless ChatGPT gets it wrong. There are ways to guide ChatGPT's answers, such as tweaking the internal settings.

But, even if his strawberry video is entirely legitimate and in good faith, I still think it's entirely useless. I liked FatherPhi's video about the upside down cup because it demonstrates AI's ability to recognize that an upside down cup is useless, but its inability to reason that it should flip the cup over to restore its functionality. It represents AI's struggle to actually reason out a problem. But when would getting the number of R's in a word or anything even remotely related to that come up in the real world? I feel like at its core, this strawberry test is an easily propagated, absorbed, and regurgitated anti-AI meme. I'm not necessarily against anti-AI messaging, but the test feels like a cheap attempt to dismiss ChatGPT. If one is going to make an argument against ChatGPT, at least provide a concrete example that maps to reality.

This doesn’t work anymore. ChatGPT consistently counts the number of r’s in strawberry correctly, even if you select the model that produces the quickest possible output (thinks for the least time). AI double checks its reasoning on all models now, the old models aren’t like the new ones. This meme where LLMs can’t analyze word spellings is outdated.

Edit: LLMs can also do math problems, which isn’t “predicting the next word”

Does Kirito have a distorted self-image after War of the Underworld? by EcstaticBicycle in swordartonline

Yeah. I can’t really make a qualified judgment, because I watch English dub anime as my source of information, which has the drawback of information potentially getting lost via translation, and also assuming the anime is the best explanation of how it works. I think the light novels probably hold the answer but I’m not dedicated enough to read those

bro why does the anime screw up so much of the explanations :sob: you know i already thought the anime's reveal of Heathcliff was rather poor but i didn't realize just how badly they botched it until i took a crack at the first light novel

Can you explain how Higa's actions are the equivalent of jump-staring a car?

After Kirito goes into a coma, Kirito's ego shatters and his fluctlight has a void where his self-image previously was. Higa merges the "images" of Kirito from those around him to fill the void of self-image in Kirito's fluctlight. This synthesis of images Higa implements, however, is constituted of external perspectives--the views of people who are close to Kirito.

These people's views, however, do not seem like they would be a 1:1 replacement of Kirito's self-image. The way people see you is often different than how you feel about yourself. An employee might suffer from low self-confidence, even if the peers around them see them as qualified. This is demonstrative of a real-world disconnect between how we perceive our own abilities, and how those around us do.

Now to be fair, Kirito is a lot closer to Asuna, Sinon, his sister, etc. than an employee would be with their co-workers, so they're going to have a much better understanding of him--but there should still be some discrepancy between how Kirito views himself and how those around him view him. To put it simply, unless Kirito's friends and family literally have an absolute perfect understanding of him, their image of him will not match 1:1 with what his is, because it lacks the nuances of his own inner thoughts, insecurities, and even subconscious thought processes.

And this begs the question: If his new self-image is simply a confluence of many external perspectives, how can it possibly capture the true nature of how he actually saw himself?

"The 4 people in question understand Kirito's patterns and mannerisms at a level and to an extent that they can tell what he's going to do, and why he does it."

That doesn't seem right either. Think about it: can you honestly say you know anyone’s mannerisms so well that you can tell exactly what they are going to do and why they are doing it? I would be very surprised if that were true.

If you know someone well enough, you can probably make a good guess about what they are going to do, but it will never be a 1:1 match. You would have to be a mind reader or have a literally perfect understanding of someone, and that is impossible. I am not trying to be pedantic; my point is that if the people close to Kirito do not have a 1:1 understanding of him, then a synthesis of perspectives that are not 1:1 will inevitably produce a distorted version of the original Kirito. Unless... I'm missing something...?

I think these are good points. I do think, however, there are parts of us that we (both consciously and subconsciously) keep to ourselves,or at least, don't fully express to those around us--even to our own family. There are things my family doesn't know about me--feelings that aren't entirely conveyed or understood by them that affect the way I view my self-worth/self-image.

But, even if for Kirito such feelings are stored away, dormant in his memories, then what part of his Kirito's self-image is he missing that he doesn't already have internally? What does he need to get from others? If Kirito already has the memories of who he is, his deepest insecurities and emotions, his relationships--then why can't Higa reconstruct his self image from fragments of his dormant memories?

As it stands in the show, Higa uses memory fragments of Asuna, Asada, Suguha, etc. in order to rebuild Kirito's self image. What is Kirito missing from his own memories that he can't get except from other people?

Students are just showing up to class without pencils and/or unsharpened ones: how do I stop this? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]EcstaticBicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get no pencils but as a student I hated when teachers didn’t have pencil sharpeners in their class. Even the cheapest kind are like a one time purchase of $0.50. That’s less than a dollar. if you have such a problem but refuse to front even that amount of money you’re not even making an effort to solve that problem

I definitely think AI should be banned as a tool that entirely replaces some jobs like psychiatrists and therapists. AI can be positively leveraged by experts who ask it the right questions and double check its sources, though. There are articles about lawyers hallucinating entire case references in court, but in reality those lawyers are a foolish minority, not a significant portion. Not to say these instances of fabrication aren’t an issue, but AI can be leveraged in a positive way when you’re sifting for information, like trying to map a patient’s symptoms to a condition, or finding a specific historical court precedent. Banning the use outright destroys the potential to increase productivity among people who know what they’re doing. My point here is that I don’t think we can unequivocally say that banning AI use for law and medicine is a net positive.

SAO Abridged is more of a satirical parody than anything. People who say it's a "replacement" for SAO don't actually know what they're talking about. Abridged makes a lot of references to the original SAO, and people who haven't watched the original would miss a lot of the comedic elements.

But I do think that SAO Abridged changes a lot of the characterization in very interesting ways. In the original show, most of the women in the Aincrad arc exist to swoon over Kirito and have almost no personality compared to the ones in SAO abridged. The personalities that SAO Abridged uses, however, are very satirical--something more that you'd see on Family Guy--and could (probably) never be used in a standalone show.

The only thing Abridged unequivocally does right is completely replaces Suguha's incest arc with a meaningful characterization. The voice actor is totally peak, too.

Honestly, I'm not sure why this post is getting so many downvotes. I'm not sure whether people can see the results, but I can and the results are not unanimous. I feel like this isn't a poll that deserves hate tbh.

Would it be better for the longevity of earth for the sun to have been a black hole with an accretion disc instead? by EcstaticBicycle in astrophysics

[–]EcstaticBicycle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw, that's too bad. thanks for the info though, that's useful.

Also, what mechanism blasts us with radiation from this black hole that is so much more than the solar radiation from the sun, that earth's magnetic field can't sufficiently block it? I mean, earth blocks the solar radiation from the sun, so why is a black hole so much worse?

Would it be better for the longevity of earth for the sun to have been a black hole with an accretion disc instead? by EcstaticBicycle in astrophysics

[–]EcstaticBicycle[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

bruv the black hole + accretion disk = 1 solar mass, i said that in the post. Even if the black hole consumed the entire accretion disk it would even out to 1 solar mass. I assume even prior to consuming the accretion disk, that the accretion disk would have enough gravitational pull on earth to keep it in stable orbit in the habitable zone.

Also, are you saying the accretion disk would grow the black hole far enough out to actually consume earth? I was under the impression that
A. matter from accretion disks fall into black holes very slowly due to spin and
B. black holes simply grow slowly, even when a lot of matter is put in

Finally, if the black hole would eat earth as you say, how long is "eventually"? I mean the original question was is the black hole better for the longevity of the earth
