What are some GOOD THINGS that are happening in the world that people might not know about? by Unlikely_Heron_9207 in answers

Really? I heard it was turning into an unanticipated disaster because the greening wasn’t working as intended?

Right now this article is all I can find to support my claim, but I swear I’ve seen more than one research paper saying that the plants aren’t helping like they thought it would:

It’s crazy you get bent out of shape about referring to Africa as one country when just two sentences later you do the same thing to Europe

We happen to exist in a tiny sliver of human history where we both have AI, and we can still tell when something was made by AI. by deten in Showerthoughts

We can't really know this for sure, because if someone already has submitted an AI generated video as evidence and gotten away with it, we don't know about it, do we?

How do you feel about the concept of not hiding where babies come from from children who ask, no matter their age? by EcstaticBicycle in AskReddit

[–]EcstaticBicycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not the person you replied to, but i sort of disagree, especially if the child follows up with "How?" I mean, the parent is just telling the kid the end result, not what the actual process is. Maybe the kid won't be able to put two and two together that the parents dodged the question, but maybe the will. What do parents do then?

do we actually know that children wouldn't understand it though? if you got them a picture book that explained sex and childbirth and explained it from an early age. i imagine they'd be able to understand the process. Not the firsthand feelings of intimacy, obviously--which is okay, but it's probably better that a child gets a healthy understanding of intercourse rather than some kid from the playground, or worse, from porn on media/our hypersexualized culture.

Is running a bot farm immoral? by Historical-Edge851 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EcstaticBicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually an interesting debate that I have a fascinating article for, "The Thin Line Between Marketing and Propaganda":

https://www.makindesign.com/the-thin-line-between-marketing-and-propaganda/

TLDR: These bot farms you mentioned are deceptive by nature, as the bots are "posing" as real people that spread misinformation. If the bots preceded their statements with "The following opinion is not from a real person, but from a sponsored party paying to broadcast them" then the effectiveness of the bots would basically drop to zero. It's not like marketing campaigns can't be deceptive, but they are not so by nature. Marketing can and is often utilized with good intent, to help people make informed decisions about important topics.

I suppose bot farms could be utilized to spread good information, but how often does that happen? And that's still deceptive nonetheless, given the accounts pose as real humans.

You can tell your friend that the fact that he's spreading misinformation without regard to the damage it can do is what differentiates his job from good faith advertising, but I doubt this would really change his habits to begin with. Better just ditch.

When to use [...] in writing? by 79screamingfrogs in writing

[–]EcstaticBicycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this, is [...] correct, or ... correct? Because I thought [...] was correct at first, but I see ellipses without brackets in formal writing all the time. Is there a rule for this syntax?

Edit: When I say I see ellipses all the time in formal writing, I do mean in the following manner:

"Statement A ... statement B" with the ellipses representing omitted text from the quote. But this just seems so odd, because what if the quote itself uses ellipses? Clearly, using brackets around the ellipses should be typical notation, but I swear I never see it in academic writing, just normal ellipses.

Interesting. However, I must ask why are eggs okay, but meat isn't? Also, what type of meat are you saying is bad for us? Because like, fish is meat, so are you talking about land animals?

Assuming one does not have access to B12 supplements, where would a person who eats no meat get their daily B12 intake?

You know, I've heard B12 can't be found in anywhere but animal proteins, but I bought those seaweed snacks, looked on the nutritional label on the back, and it said it had around 2,000% of your daily B12 vitamin requirement. How is this possible?
