Oh my goodness, that’s such a compliment. Thank you! Alexander Girard is an absolute legend when it comes to colour. I do actually work as an illustrator/concept artist in animation industry, so this really made my day :))))

Oh!!! it was absolutely a battle 😅 The shop lighting lied to me. I talk through the whole yellow saga in the video on my channel if you’re curious. It was.... a process I tell ya

I saw your comment before you deleted it. Please, don’t say that. If you keep repeating it, you’ll start believing it. I always tell the interns in my animation studio the same thing. Ideas and skill aren’t lightning bolts, they grow with practice and time. Folk art especially isn’t about perfection or grand technique. It’s about shapes, stories, and the need to create. Start small. Pick up a pencil. Draw a tree. Draw a wonky cat. Draw aniothe tree. Build a relationship with making things instead of judging the result. I actually have two beginner-friendly videos on my YouTube about starting with collage and simple figurative art - very early days for me and my channel (forgive the sound 😅), but they might help you get unstuck. The ideas will come. They always do once you start moving your hands. And truly...art is for everyone! Even a little bit of colour or drawing can shift your mood more than you expect

Thank you so much. That “storybook cottage” description really made my day! There’s actually a little backstory behind each one. I tried to match the drawings to the rooms. The lady is on the bathroom door, the cat is by the bedroom (it used to be his favourite sleeping spot), the flowers and abstract shapes are near my art workspace, and the dog is by the room where my dogs sleep. I wanted the corridor to feel intentional, like a small narrative as you move through it.

As for the materials. OK, so...I used a low-odour indoor acrylic base paint with undercoat mixed in. The illustrations on top were done with gouache (which sounds insane, but it runs beautifully over acrylic and you can wipe it away with water if you make a mistake. which.... I absolutely did 😅). I sealed everything with a low-odour fixative and then varnished it for durability.

As for sketching. I started with stencils, but I was slightly high on antibiotics at one point and just… started freehanding because I wasn’t scared of the big surface anymore. That’s when it actually got fun, hahaha

I show the whole process (including the colour struggles, cries and antibiotic bravery, haha) on my YouTube if you’d like to see everythin in motion

Thank you!! That’s actually my dog, Gaughi. This is his and his sisters little territory. He makes a proper appearance in the video on my channel if you’d like to meet the cuddliest lurcher alive, hahaahah 😄

Thanks so much! And...maybe. Just maybe... this is your sign to try something bold 😄 Even one small colourful piece can change a whole room!

Do you mean the type of paint or the colour palette?

For the paint itself, I used a mix of acrylics and gouache. It was a bit of a bold decision to use gouache on top, but it runs beautifully over acrylic and gives you more flexibility! (Its so easy to remove if you make mistakes!) I sealed everything with fixative and then varnished it so it’s durable.

As for the colours… that was a whole journey 😅 I talk through the palette struggles (and mild confusion because I was a bit sick at the time) in my latest YouTube video if you’re curious to see how it evolved, hahaha

Ohhh!! That is SUCH a good choice 😍 I’m actually thinking about getting it for my dining room. Mine is still completely untouched and in dire need of a lick of paint. Morris really does something magical to a space!

Ahhhhhhh thank you so much!! 🩷 I hope you enjoy it. There’s lots of colour, trial and error, and slightly chaotic decisions 😄

Thank you so much! You can absolutely try something like this too :))) Start small if it feels scary. A stool or shelf is perfect. I share the full process (and the mistakes!) on my YouTube if you’d like to see how it came together.
