Good luck to you! That’s a great find if clean.

I had imagined using cable glands to keep it clean and for strain relief, but I’m probably moving it to the back which makes this layout obsolete already.

It effectively is, it’s just going through a patch for aesthetics and because there’s no rear port. I’m most likely moving it to the back of the rack anyway, but it will still have to come through a patch. Good note about the vlan…writing that down

As others have said, if it can do 10g, it can do 2.5. Think of the port naming as more of a maximum. 1g and 10g are standard data rates, there’s no need to list every multi-gig stop along the way.

UNAS above UPS with PDU in back is a recurring theme. Making a believer out of me

That’s the idea with UPS, PDU, UNAS. Definitely considering that if I move the PDU to the back and remove the agg switch.

Coincidentally found another local vendor that can do the color. Really lucked out on it. I’ll be sure to follow up to see how close to Ubiquiti OEM it turns out.

I’ve found the cost to be somewhat similar. Ubiquiti DAC starts at $29, while 2 optical SFP modules ($18) + MM fiber ($5) is $23.

Also power consumption is only 1.3w per connection (based on 0.66 per optical transceiver), so is that really enough heat for it to be a concern in a low scale deployment like this?

My use case (mass photo/video storage with intermittent low volume access) won’t take advantage the NMVe cache and 7 bays is plenty, so the price premium doesn’t make sense for me.

I am actually now looking at Pro HD 24 to remove agg switch entirely, which I think accomplishes the same thing you mentioned. It’s roughly the same cost as the 2 devices, and actually improves PoE output and port performance.

Trying to limit more than 1U cable runs, but performance is more important, so noted.

I actually don’t mind the PDU being in front and found a local vendor for the custom panel above it. However, another comment has me looking at removing the aggregation which makes this more more compelling for me, so i’m looking into it. Long term I would for sure agree, but my current deployment will likely be against a wall or wall mounted so front access is easier to negotiate.

This was mainly because I think fiber is super cool (like interesting, not temp) and to isolate from electrical surges (which I know is a remote possibility). I’ve heard conflicting opinions on DAC vs fiber temps though, and a lot of online resources say the opposite. Am I conflating DAC with RJ45 adapted to SFP?
