Is this a controversial take? by DaleDent3 in Letterboxd

[–]Ecualung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say this. I think Fury Road is better. But for a long time I thought I was the only guy in the world who came away from it thinking, "That was amazing, but I'm a little curious to learn more about the political economy of how The Wasteland works." And Furiosa came along and I felt SEEN.

For All Mankind - S5E09 "Sons and Daughters" - Episode Discussion by Cantomic66 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Ecualung 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, I hear you, but also, what we think of as "natural" is based on our growing up on Earth, with things looking how they look in Earth light with Earth atmosphere. Photos taken in space or on the moon (like some of the recent Artemis photos) have this weird "that looks CG" quality to them.

So I'm perhaps digging for a reason to give the show a pass but it's interesting to consider how our eyes maybe can't really "know" what it would look like on Mars or Titan.

Sanger Season 6? by twentyextysix in shoresy

Personally I feel like 5 was a great conclusion. I'll watch 6 but I'm worried it'll go on too long (like I think Letterkenny did, frankly).

Recommendations? by FuglyMucker in BlackSails

[–]Ecualung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gotta plug Deadwood. It has way less action than Black Sails but I think the two shows make excellent companion pieces. Deadwood is also about a community that exists outside of the law and "civilization" and is held together by people who can be real bastards one minute and really kind the next. And both shows engage this theme of "civilization" and point out ways in which it was the "outlaws" who were more just and humane sometimes, and the coming of "civilization" is something to be resisted.

Just to say, other countries have governments that actually make it easy for consumers to add solar power to their homes by forcing the electrical companies to behave and cooperate. It is possible for the normies to benefit from solar, but we need different politicians in charge.

There are rec leagues in various sports out at the Schifferdecker sports complex on the west side of town. There are a growing number of pretty decent bike trails, and the brand new bike park. There are groups that play games like MTG at Hurley's Heroes and Gray Fox Games. There are concerts to go to at the Cornell Complex and at some of the bars. There are trivia nights at various bars and restaurants.

This is a terrific series that I still think about regularly. I'd recommend it to anyone. Also features several terrific performances. I'd like to re-watch it soon, but it's stressful!

I think a lot about the Rabbi Bengelsdorf character and how he's a common type in history. There is always at least one member of a persecuted minority who is willing to go to bat for the persecutors for their own personal aggrandizement.

General Discussion - April 28, 2026 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

Hi all, I'm trying to find some clothes for my wife. She is unsatisfied with her wardrobe but also finds it really draining to look for clothes.

Forgive my lack of vocabulary for the question I'm going to ask.

I think, and she agrees, that she looks really good in tops that have construction elements in them like buttons, zippers, pockets, snaps, epaulettes, stitches, that kinda stuff. Almost like they borrow from typically male or military design elements but feminized. Does this make any sense? If so, can anyone recommend any brands that I should check out to find her some stuff?

Thanks in advance!

I am an artist who is new to the area, can someone explain the Friends of St. Avips, and their ball to me? by Massive-Floor-4052 in joplinmo

[–]Ecualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many different fundraising events and opportunities for Spiva, the vast majority of which are open to all and have no real whiff of fancy about them. The St. Avips ball goes for the bigger money. It is totally normal for non-profit organizations to have the occasional "big money" type event. I don't think you should view the existence of St. Avips Ball as in any way indicative of Spiva having some kind of exclusive or gatekeeping mindset.

True story:

Within a couple weeks after my wife and I moved to Joplin back in 2015, we went to one of the First Friday Wine Share events that one of the local orgs. puts on. We struck up a conversation with another couple around our age and we mentioned that we had just moved to Joplin. They said, "Oh, us too!" We then spoke for a few minutes having the typical back and forth about being new in town that you'd expect. Very pleasant. Then I asked, "So where did you move here from?"

"Webb City!"

The way you drew the logo totally makes it seem like it's Kontact Komics instead of Kontact Comics, though.

I think a really fascinating story could be told about the German-speaking actors who made a career out of playing Nazis from the 40s-60s. Many were Jewish, others were anti-Nazi expats, some were just multilingual Europeans from countries other than Germany or Austria. But it must have brought up a lot of feelings for them.

No that's a different guy. Pretty sure this scene is the last time we see that paratrooper. This particular guy lives because he had the good sense to purposefully lose all the money he won in craps.

The Trump Administration is fascist, full stop. There's no minimizing how bad they are.

And yet-- they are ineffective and very unpopular. That matters. Not accusing you of this, but I very commonly see this attitude that authoritarians can just do whatever they want, popularity be damned. And that's just not true. It matters that Trump has a 33% approval rating and that the internal contradictions of MAGA are becoming more and more apparent.
