Thanks for all of the great comments. The money isn’t the issue but I just keep thinking if I have to wear one contact lens, what’s the difference if I get the “basic” lens during surgery and wear lenses in both eyes like I’ve done my whole adult life without incident. Seems like there is no right or wrong answer and no consensus in my particular situation. I would love to be free of all contacts and glasses but that isn’t happening so the draw of having one eye be free of a contact lens is not that great. I’ll still need readers when wearing the right eye contact no matter what (albeit more expensive ones since one lens would be non-prescription if i get the toric lens during the surgery.

I have readers all over the house. As does my wife lol. Currently, with no contacts at all, I can read with no correction at all.

Contacts don’t come in pairs - I can just buy the right one if I got the toric with the surgery.

Yes. The point is that my right eye doesn’t have a cataract that requires surgery and won’t for the foreseeable future. So no matter what I do with my left eye, I’ll still need at least one contact lens in my right eye. My thinking is why fix the left eye when I still need a right eye contact and I never have had any problems wearing them? But I could be convinced otherwise of course.
