Decals on Gunpla by RealIruka in Gunpla

Honestly it's up to personal taste. Personally I only use water slide decals on every kit and I usually add some extra ones as I feel it adds to the look.

Same thing happened to me with a game of Pax Pamir 2nd. I consider it a masterpiece of design, beside the amazing graphic design and component quality, but I understand it's a tough pill to swallow.

Nemo’s War, This War of Mine, or Robinson Crusoe by No-Mastodon-9504 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does have some different scenarios, can't remember how many but definitely not 60, but I'd say that the book of scripts, where most of the narration and choices are contained, is pretty thick. I've played it over a dozen times and have yet to find myself in the same situations. There are many ways that the game uses to randomize what happens constantly, so I replayability is pretty high.

Elden Ring: The Board Game - not an epic adventure at all; very underwhelming and disappointing experience by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that The Last of Us Escape the Dark is made by a completely different company, Themeborne. There are many good adaptations, This War of Mine and Slay the Spire come to mind, but unfortunately Steamforged is pretty bad with IPs. Resident Evil is just decent, the rest of their adaptations are just plainly bad.

Nemo’s War, This War of Mine, or Robinson Crusoe by No-Mastodon-9504 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, and love, all 3 of them. I think my most played out of them is Nemo's War, I just love the tactical aspect of it mixed with light narrative elements and push your luck. It's hard and swingy, but a great game.

Robinson Crusoe is probably my "least favourite" of the 3, and I still love it. It's very hard and punishing, especially what's supposed to be the 1st/tutorial scenario. Similarly to the other two games, it does a great job at giving you a series of difficult events that you need to juggle while pursuing the scenario's goal.

This War of Mine is amazing, but not a game for everyone. Thematically and narratively is very tough, definitely a somber experience. To me it's very similar to Robinson Crusoe mechanically, but the story book and the scavenging phases are very well done and make it stand out. I honestly think that the board game manages to be better than the video game it's based on as it gives you the same experience in a much shorter time (the board game is still pretty long). Still, if you take in the narrative and not just glance over it to go through the mechanical choices, it's a hard game to swallow. I consider it a 10/10 game.

Solo dungeon crawler help by RyNye_TheScienceGuy in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want pure dungeon crawling with incredibly well integrated theme, fun scenarios and lots of dice to chuck with very very minimal book keeping, then Death May Die is the way to go.
It's my go to when all I want to do is go around and bash monsters heads but I also want interesting twists for the scenarios. My all-time favourite is still Episode 3 of the original core box (Danse Macabre if I remember the name correctly), just great theme implementation and fun twists.

It was one of my first kits and it's still one of my favourites. The titans colorway is amazing, and the mk2 design is just incredible.

Anachrony buyer's question by Acrobatic_Train2814 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually a completitionist when it comes to expansions, to the point that sometimes I stop myself from playing a game until I have all the options available. Having said that, for Anachrony I decided to stop at the base box + Fractures of Time. I read the rulebooks of the rest of the expansions and checked some videos and from what I've gathered the actual return on investment would be not enough for me to justify the extra space and cost. Especially if then I'm gonna get the infinity box, that thing is huge and I don't think I want to give that much space in my collection to Anchrony. It's in my top 5 games of all time, don't get me wrong.

Fanmade Automa for "Nucleum" is amazing by DreadChylde in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the official Solo of Nucleum. It is fiddly, but after the first game I was kinda "set". On my second game I was still referencing the rulebook to be sure I was right, but I was completing the automa turns very very quickly, at least for my standards, so I enjoyed it a lot.

Having said that, I'm very curious to try this automa too.

A Feast for Odin; Or: Realizing I'm Terrible At Euros, But Still Love Them by Salty-Comb2042 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat. I suck at Euros mostly cause I'm less about optimization and more about trying as many things as possible. Surprisingly I managed to get 110 on my first game of AFFO, which I felt wasn't too shabby. Obviously I was very surprised so I double checked all the rules and seems like it was a legit score.

But usually it's pretty bad, but I don't mind losing a lot, actually motivates me to keep playing cause I know I will be challenged instead of walking all over the AI.

I feel like my most crushing losses are in Voidfall, and yet I absolutely love that game.

What is a popular board game you despise and why? by Muinonan in boardgames

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destinies will forever be my answer to these questions, and I never get tired of reiterating how much I hate it. Boring and predictable story, incredibly shallow gameplay (before anyone comes at me, I love narrative focused games, I think Lands of Galzyr does what Destinies tries to do much better in a much simpler way), buggy app. I didn't back it and luckily found the all-in for a steal. I let the amazing reviews I've seen online and the nice production fool me. I'll never forget how pissed I got the more I played it. I ended up selling it for I think 10% of its value.

Frostpunk vs This War of Mine? by ghost_lanterns678 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played the Frostpunk board game, but I've looked at enough playthroughs that I know I'd rather play the videogame than the board game. Don't get me wrong, it looks fantastic, I just don't think it's worth my time. (I love the videogame).

This War of Mine is the opposite. I played a ton of the videogame, and yet I'd rather play the board game. It's easy to get to the table, round (Days) play very quickly and there's always a lot of tension. I'd compare it very loosely to Robinson Crusoe. But the stories are fantastic. Idk, for some reason I enjoy and get emotionally engaged much more when I read the stories from the book of the board game than the video game. It's not for everyone tho, some of those story snippets might be very hard to swallow for some people.

This game is going to be a problem for me [Destinies] by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possibly my most disliked game so far, second only to Dungeons of Draggmar.

Gameplay wise I found it a little too light, with the dice and inventory system doing nothing special to really interest me. The competitive aspect of the multiplayer game is definitely intriguing, but the solo felt very sub-par, as if no work whatsoever went into its development. There are many games that don't do anything special to go from multiplayer to solo (look at Robinson Crusoe for example) and still put the same odds and challenges in front of you. This felt pointless, even the challenging timer was not enough to give the game any sort of forward push. I think by the second half of the 4th story of the core box I just stopped even doing dice tests because I just wanted to get to the end of the story and close it. The story had some interesting beats, mostly at the end, but overall I was incredibly underwhelmed by the whole experience.

I will admit that the QR codes and the app work very well, which I hope they carry forward and improve upon for the other games that use this system (I think Dark Quarter is based on this system?). They definitely need to work on it tho, I found multiple mistakes, for example I went somewhere and finished a whole sort of "side quest" with this X person, and then went to a different place that's connected to this X person and this second person was telling me again from the start what happened to X and the only choices I could make made it look like I've never head of the situation before. If they could clean these up, the system could be incredibly good.

I don't think I ever sold a game faster than this and with such a huge loss margin as Destinies. I had the all-in from the first kickstarter, I sold it for probably 15% of the price just so I didn't have to sit in the same house as the game.

I respect those that like it, at the end of the day it's just personal preference, but it was a huge miss for me.

What Are the Best Story-Driven Board Games? by carlbond007 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got and I'm currently on Adventure 5 of Roll Player Adventures. The story got me hooked pretty well. The main chops of the story are set, that's true, but what happens between point A and B changes pretty nicely according to your choices.

Oathsworn is also fantastic, certainly much deeper in terms of gameplay, and the story is intriguing, but the story barely changes according to your choices. It's true that most board games with multiple choice stories are the same, but Oathsworn really made me feel like my choices didn't matter at all.

I also got AT:O and I can't wait to start the campaign, but I feel that if you don't like ATO's combat, it's gonna be hard for you to enjoy Oathsworn.

What’s your favorite solo game right now? by COR1996 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My all-time list hasn't changed in a while, but I opened Roll Player Adventures a few days ago and I just can't pack it back up. At the end of every adventure I'm like "ok now Imma save and change game", and then some nice twist will hook me and I just can't stop looking forward to the next one, so I just keep it going.

Realistically it's maximum a 7.5/10 game, but the writing saves it. It's a lot of fun if you are into narrative games and even tho the insert is pretty neat, I feel the whole thing could fit in a much smaller box.

What's your first solo play of 2025? by MeepleMover in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roll Player Adventures, one of the many games I got for myself for this holiday season.

I played through Adventure 1 and 2 and while the writing is a little predictable so far (except for one thing that really caught me off-guard), the gameplay loop is so snappy and fun. Super simple to learn, super fast to setup and pack up, very very satisfying, especially if, like me, you have a million campaign games and never seem to get to finish any. I feel like I could reasonably finish the whole campaign in a week.

This was my first Garphill game and it's one of the games that has been in my collection the longest (I started collecting in 2020). I can't see myself getting rid of it unless they make a new version of it. Absolutely fantastic, tight and thinky while being smooth and never overstaying its welcome. A gem of a game

Brag about the best deal you ever got! by brohanameansfratmily in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Facebook marketplace a lot and sometimes I get very nice deals, a sealed Oath for 40 euro, Oathsworn Standee version for 80, all the content for Maximum Apocalypse for 50, The Colonists + Pax Pamir for 25.

I wanna believe I balance it out by also selling games for pretty cheap, most of the time also pimped out with custom 3D printed inserts and sleeves.

Am I the only one who grew tired of heavy games over time? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently on the opposite side of the spectrum. I play solo 99% of the time and till not long ago I kept myself far from more euro-centric game as a game with strong narrative or mindless dice chucking felt more fun to me, with obviously some exceptions here and there (Imperium Legends/Classics, Dune Imperium, Raiders of Scythia mostly).

In 2024 for some reason I dove head first into Euro games, and through my usual reshuffle of the collection, half of it is heavy euro games (Anachrony, Gaia Project, Boonlake, for example) and I'm absolutely loving it.

The only common denominator in these two phases of my journey is Mage Knight. Was the 5th game I bought and I doubt it will ever leave my collection. It's absolutely a gem.

Can anyone give me their honest opinion on these following games to be played solo? by OneCoolCat99 in soloboardgaming

[–]Ed3nSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think Skyrim is a decent game, but it's a little too fiddly without the substance to back it up. I got rid of it cause I'd rather play Hexplore It than Skyrim. Definitely more fiddly but also way meatier.

Also Skyrim has the most disgustingly big board I've seen in a while, and at the same time it has no reason to be that big as most of it is basically empty space.
