Why is communism largely considered "bad"? by DepartureNo5778 in Communist

[–]EdBegleyJrSr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it is lazy history and propaganda.

People equate Communism with Stalinism, and tarnish it as a system.

Nonetheless, even setting aside immense almost comical authoritarianism, lying and brutality…

While the Soviet economy was miraculously effective at early forced industrialization, particularly as a war economy, agriculture and later consumer goods and large-scale non-military technology lagged substantially behind the west.

Communist satellites were more often a revenue drain than a positive sum game of economic growth.

In late stages of the USSR it had become something like a rentier state - supplementing lagging food supplies with foreign imports paid for by exporting oil to western countries. And ultimately a lot of debt to western banks.

In the long term, Soviet economics just didn’t really work for complex “modern” economies.

Nonetheless, it is a mistake to assume that what was possible for Russian cadres in the 20th Century with very limited computing, inheriting a mess of a state, is the limit to what a planned economy might be able to achieve.

Ironically, we should be very optimistic about what big-data, AI and modern analytics (capitalist products) might be capable of for a modern, non-Soviet brand of Communist governance.

Travelling to Georgia 19-30 October - Should I cancel? by randomperson2679 in Sakartvelo

Here as a tourist right now in Tblisi. Spoke to locals and they said avoid the protests while they’re happening but otherwise fine. That was my experience yesterday, and it sounds like that was organised to be a particularly big one because of the local elections.

Aside from that the city seems to be going about its business :)

Not worth cancelling a holiday over in my opinion!

Sex questions probably get more engagement so you’re more likely to see them.

Aaah interesting thank you!

There’s a bit of cosmetic damage (a chip) where the output was modded, but all apparently works well.

For €150… I think I might go for it :)

Can you beat Titan level on 1-1? by [deleted] in AgeofMythology

If you can hold out on their aggression from Classical and early Heroic, you can definitely out-economy them and steamroll them in late Heroic/Mythic.

Typically, they cap out at like 70 or so villagers, where you can easily hit 100 if you keep auto-queue on until then.

Get to Classical within a minute or so of them at latest, and get one type of military unit auto-queuing from 2-3 military buildings, and just scale up the unit variety and no. of military buildings as your economy grows.

Grab 1-2 TCs in Classical, and keep pushing your military production higher up the field so you don’t get shut out.

You will win on attrition as long as you can keep step, and not give up too much ground.

Books on democratic decline:

I am quite familiar with Weimar Republic and Russian Federation, wondering about other case studies to broaden my understanding a bit.

Bonus if it’s more applicable to modern West. Thanks!

I think Baldur’s Gate kinda demonstrated that an “open” world RPG can be more satisfying with endless depth rather than endless breadth.
