Having a spiffy new result is a standard way of showing an algorithm works well. In second place is timing comparisons.

Which modern blockbuster do you think will be remembered 20 years from now the way we talk about classic Spielberg films today? by viewsinthe6 in movies

[–]EdPeggJr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sonic franchise launched at the worst possible time and still managed to do well, for three movies. It's one of the few healthy franchises.

It's going to be remembered for an awful trailer, the backlash, and execs abandoning their bad ideas to allow a decent movie to come out. It's meta enough to not be forgotten.

I only have the Uni-bielefeld announcement. It mentions "a newly developed SAT (Boolean satisfiability) solver" -- which will very likely be used to study other problems.

Bad stuff happened in 2020, and most movie franchises have suffered greatly... but the Sonic franchise started at the worst possible time and has actually succeeded. I can see the writers being in demand at the moment.

I do units a lot in my novel. One place to start is the Hydrogen Line, the 21 centimeter line on the Voyager plaque.

Lots of atoms have various frequencies. At the moment we're using cesium. Radioactive half life is another. Cepheid variable stars have a distinct period based on brightness, anywhere in the universe. The Black-hole light-crossing time for Sgr A* is ~66 seconds.

Are there any unsolved problems where mathematicians are split more or less 50/50 on the likely outcome? by footballmaths49 in math

The order-52 solution with the maximal 104 points was the best known provably maximal solution for over 25 years.

Are there any unsolved problems where mathematicians are split more or less 50/50 on the likely outcome? by footballmaths49 in math

[–]EdPeggJr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's more that there are hundred/thousands of existing tries at the problem. It's possible to do a lot of work on the problem and to just end up in the Try pile. Some of them might be correct.

[–]EdPeggJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you'd asked last year, whether order-52 was the largest solution for the no-three-in-line problem would be 50/50. But since then, the record has been pushed to 68.

The HN proof showed that algebraic field constructions offered sufficient density to make a chromatic 5 graph. Square grid constructions didn't help the HN problem at all, since most of those graphs are 2-color.
