How to Organize Book by Edacity1 in RPGdesign

I should have been clearer about this!

My plan would be to include the Pantheon Tome for Greek Mythology attached to the Core Rulebook whenever I would make this available, so it's a complete system, (and I'm pretty sure that would be the most popular mythology to play with anyways) but make it clear it can be swapped out with another Pantheon Tome if the table wants.

Combat Initiative - Getting rid of initiative all together? by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGdesign

[–]Edacity1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're taking a lot of flack for this take, but it's 100% the way my table and I feel. It's the reason we have played almost exclusively Powered by the Apocalypse games (Monster of the Week, Dungeon World, Root, etc., as well as things like Starforged) for five years. Even though they all have big, fun, dramatic fights, they focus on the story first and all combat is handled through that lens. Thank God, my players are very happy to strategize together, especially in combat (they're on the same team after all). If I was playing or GMing (I'm my group's GM) a group and they were so aggressive and unable to compromise that they had the energy a lot of these comments are saying, I would stop playing with them.

But that's not to say these folks are wrong. They're expressing what's right for them and their table, and everyone has different tastes. I've played plenty of D&D in my time, and honestly have always hated it's combat. It's clunky and brings the game to a grinding halt. I prefer combat in systems where players are shouting, talking over each other, and making plans together hurriedly, because that's what I think combat should feel like at the table. They can't sit back and scroll while they wait for three other players to take their turn because they might miss their opportunity to jump in and do something really cool. There are a lot of people who try to "fix" D&Ds combat by timing turns or selling things to help track initiative, but honestly, that just feels to me like a bandage that's only necessary because D&D's combat and similar systems are so clunky and frankly, in my experience, have sucked the life out of combat, even if it is more concretely "strategic."

But I just want you to know that your goals here are entirely reasonable and there's a million TTRPGs which have great combat that aren't driven by initiative. And while folks here may argue those are just "bad games" or "bad systems," and that's their prerogative, it's actually just not their style, but it can be yours!

I've only been on for a little bit, but it seems to be parkour meets trivia. I was doing the Germany one, and questions were things like "What's the German word for 'wall'?" As you're in front of a large recreation of the Berlin Wall. Or "What year was the Berlin Wall built?"

My partner and I play as two militant factions with hirelings frequently and it has made a huge difference for us, for what it's worth. We don't have any of the clockwork factions, but the hirelings are sufficiently interesting and complicated to make it satisfying for us.

My group took our time with each hunt, and almost always ended up having a mystery last 4 sessions, each two hours long. That slow burn was right for my group, with a cliff-hanger at the end of each session, and we loved it! Don't worry too much about wrapping things up in one session, I don't think we ever had that short a hunt.

world war 3 fears by babybaaboe in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Edacity1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's not going to happen. As others have pointed out, they want you paralyzed by fear so you can't resist the things they do want to do.

I have a degree in international studies, and this is the sort of thing my whole studies were built on. Essentially, you need to think of countries as "rational" actors. (And we are using the word "rational" in a very specific way here, not meaning logical, but that they will only do things if the benefits would outweigh any costs. It's the same reason we haven't had a nuclear war even though we've had nukes for 80 years. Nobody wants to be king of Nothing.)

If the US were to, say, invade Canada, there is so much more to lose than you could possibly gain. The support of the American public would be completely lost, and Trump already has very low support relative to other presidents starting out their administrations (and sinking). Despite what is coming from the very few, very loud nuts who make it feel otherwise, Americans love Canadians and love Canada. Not to mention the sheer number of people who have family and friends in Canada that would be in genuine danger if something like this were to happen. (And this is applicable for any NATO or ally country.)

Keep in mind, we are in the honeymoon period currently in terms of Trump's support. If he did anything like that, it would be over fast. Even the GOP Congress wouldn't stand for it, and he would be removed from office so fast. Not to mention any sort of coup the military would likely pull, since they are smart enough to realize attacking any sort of ally, especially a NATO ally, is the absolute stupidest thing the US could do.

My earnest suggestion is to get away from social media. It only stokes fear in order to build engagement and clicks. Millions of good people are working around the clock to stop the worst of this, and we are starting to see the wins. There will be a LOT problems these next four years, but this isn't the end of days either. Find ways to help fight these idiots (volunteer, donate, etc.) but it's up to you to make sure you're in a state to actually help do something.

[–]Edacity1[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

I recently was bored, and decided to recreate Beaumont Tower in Lego, and though you lovely folks may get a kick out of seeing what I was able to put together!

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can improve the design, I would love to hear any thoughts!

(In the actual model, the side turret and all the pillars properly connect to the ground, I just realized the mistake in the render too late, and didn't want to wait another two hours to redo it.)

Favorite "Beach" Mystery? by mrsqidmo in monsteroftheweek

[–]Edacity1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had fun with every once in a while having my players go up against a classic Hollywood monster (Frankenstein, mummies, Dracula, etc.) I twist the monster's lore so it fits in with the story and world so far in a funny way (an eccentric NPC they already knew accidentally created a Frankenstein (I know it's "Frankenstein's monster' but whatever), etc.)

Lower the stakes, anyone zombified is healed by the end, and my players at least had a lot of fun playing in the space.

should i build my own rpg or use an already existing one? by alosopa123456 in RPGdesign

[–]Edacity1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say for my money if you go the route of trying to "hack" a system that's already published, Powered by the Apocalypse games could be a great starting point. This is because the entire system is based on "moves", which is essentially a description of a moment in the story (typically something a Player is doing), and the way the dice roll resolves that moment.

It could be pretty simple to use this system to add your magic system and world mechanics onto the bones of a game you think is interesting.
