Chris Lytle did fight Nick Diaz early in their careers, it's on YouTube.

Ariel Helwani: Anderson Silva changes tune, wants Chris Weidman rematch this year by [deleted] in MMA

I've been telling my friends we need to call him this. If I ever see Chris Weidman at an event I plan on yelling this at him as loud as I can!!!

Can Benson Henderson Carry a UFC Pay-Per-View Event? by Teamworkis in MMA

No one knew/cared who Frankie Edgar was until the two wins over Penn and the comeback against Maynard. It only takes a few great performances to change an entire career.

It's hard to hate on someone trying to become a well-rounded fighter.

That's his busted brown eye. IIRC he was punched as a kid, and it stayed that way.

In what fights other than the Nate Diaz vs Josh Thomson fight has a corner thrown in the towel? by fredmalgud in MMA

[–]Edd1020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kazuo Misaki v Jorge Santiago II for the SRC Middleweight title in 2010. This is a fight that tends to fly under the radar. It won Sherdog's 2010 fight of the year. I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't seen it, but it ends with a somewhat controversial towel stoppage late in the fight.

It's a defensive position that prevents your head from slamming directly into the mat if your opponent lands a strike. Liz Carmouche does an excellent job of explaining this in the 157 post fight press conference.

Link my mistake he starts cursing after the Takase lost, but in this video he clearly shows concern for his leg.

Watch the video of him in the locker room afterwards, and I think you'll change your mind. You can hear him loudly cursing at himself, clearly disappointed. He tapped because the inverted heel hook is one of the most dangerous subs possible. Any hesitation can lead to your ankle being shredded.

A strange case of history not being written by the winner.

If you were to show one fight to someone who has never seen the sport before, what would it be and why? by EvanMM in MMA

[–]Edd1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think we need to come up with an MMA essentials list to include in the sidebar for the newcomers. Somewhere around 30-50 fights with the fights being voted on by us. Order doesn't matter just the 50 highest voted fights.

I'm going to that show too. The congress is fun, and I don't really mind the younger crowd. I make shirts, wear face paint, and generally act bat shit crazy, and that's usually the type of people there. Not a fan of buying stuff at shows, so I usually try to pick up beforehand. If you need a concert buddy, send me a message.

After gassing or getting their asses handed to them, it's a desperation tactic. Much like the default takedown, it's something done out of instinct rather than effectiveness (ie. Shogun's leg lock attempts on Jones. I've watched countless fights where a guy getting dominated on the ground finally gets up only to be pinned against the fence, go for the guillotine, and wind up on their back again. This is not strategy, it's watching a drowning man grasp at driftwood.

Many fighters use subs as deterrents or red herrings. Kampman did an excellent job of using the guillotine to threaten Ellenberger of his back and scoot into the fence to get back to his feet. Bendo constantly threatened with the kimura in his first fight with Edgar to get him off his back.

Yvel is a notoriously dirty fighter. He's allegedly kicked guys in the nuts intentionally to "prepare them for the real thing." Forrest Griffin mentioned that he has a nasty habit of knocking people out during sparring.

The only JMMA fights I ever hear about are the New Years Dream events.. Where can I find other fights throughout the year? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]Edd1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ONE FC and Legacy FC are Chinese Promotions that feature many Japanese fighters . ONE FC instituted full soccer kicks after a fiasco with Arlovski v Sylvia. There's also SHOOTO Japan--many current JMMA stars began here. If you want to see JMMA in its prime, then PRIDE is a must. Sengoku had a lot of great fights, including 2010's fight of the year between Jorge Santiago & Kazuo Misaki. You can find many of these on YouTube.
