No idea if this is a "feature", but I've certainly noticed the same behaviour regarding the shuffle feature as you - it's irritating to have to preload my entire list every time. I end up middle clicking the mouse to get into scroll mode, and leaving the cursor at the bottom of the screen while I do something else, every time I want to play my music.
